  7. I would totally agree with this. They seem to be doing their best to not only kill all the people, but the country itself.

  12. Boaters with a home mooring won't pay less than CCers, they'll just pay it in two chunks instead of one. Currently, we pay more. Whether CRT will factor in the benefit that genuine cruisers bring to the system is a moot point. Twenty years ago you could argue that they provided an invaluable service, and those that cruise still do. Sadly they are now a minority and it's the usual story of those that manipulate the system, in the end, making it worse for everyone including themselves.

  16. There are those that think that payment should be in proportion to benefit available. Obviously more benefit is being obtained when there are more people on a boat so the charge should be by person. Others think payment should be levied whether or not a benefit is taken up, so clearly the charge should be by the number of persons a boat can take. Dogs can benefit from the water-bourne experience so the charge should also include an element for the number of dogs that could be accomodated on the boat. The benefit increases with the size of the boat so that should be taken into account as well. This is a capitalist society so the charge should increase with demand, so the charge should be tapered, with London and similar 10 times that of Manchester, and a small payment should be made to people boating in, say, Leeds. Assets should be sold off, and a friend of mine has made a lot of money selling 1sq metre plots in Scotland, so perhaps some canals could be sold off by the gallon? The correct way to finance anything these days is to borrow big time, or get the funds from advertising. Large billboards (and jillboards) along the most scenic canals, filmed from drones and played on Youtube should raise at least 4s 6d per annum. Borrowing big time only works if you borrow too big to be allowed to fail and that is not available to C&RT.

  17. It won't make any difference, the decision as to what to do has almost certainly already been made.

  20. I’m not. I was merely highlighting how interesting it is that smoke output and PM2.5 are not related. Which is probably against what most people would assume about the subject.

  23. One problem is that governments have a track record of introducing regulations without providing the bodies who are made responsibie for enforcement, with the resources to do so.

  25. Nah, fill it with lifting balloons so when it floods it won't sink and use a commercial tug to drag it out to sea. Dunno where you'd want to take it, and you're looking at several hundred thousand quid by this point but it would work - on a calm day!

  26. Read the Licence T&Cs - things change ............................. Types of Licences The following types of licence can be applied for. These Conditions (including any Schedules) below apply to these options: β€’ A Pleasure Boat Licence (β€œstandard boat licence”) for either 3, 6 or 12 months is required to navigate on Our Canals & Rivers. You will need a home mooring for Your boat for this licence type. β€’ A Rivers Only Licence is valid for β€˜River Waterways’. These are defined in Schedule 1 of the British Waterways Act 1971, as amended. A Rivers Only Licence constitutes a β€œpleasure boat certificate” for the purposes of the Act. β€’ A Continuous Cruising licence does not need Your boat to have a home mooring. This licence is either for 6 or 12 months and You’ll have to follow Our β€˜Guidance for Boaters Without a Home Mooring’.

  34. I can't speak for all BMS types, but my one has user programmable settings that you can set an upper cell voltage disconnect, and an overall voltage disconnect. I believe if the BMS is activated that discharge can still take place as long as none of the discharge parameters have been triggered. The solar controller(s), as well as an absorption and float voltage setting also have an over voltage disconnect and a charge limit. I set my solar controller so that it goes into float well before the BMS cuts in. I am one of those that believe the BMS should not be used as a charge control device, but that the charging sources, if using a homebrew system should be set accordingly.

  37. I dunno why they are bothering. They need to do what needs doing and impose it on the boaters. They will tie themselves in knots trying to govern the waterways by consensus. It's a very childish way to try to run a business or charity.

  38. Just wait until the NBTA have "negotiated" with CRT on the topic ... worked well for the fuel payments!

  40. Yeah, we wouldn't want @IanD being able to tell CRT he thinks he should pay more for his licence because he has a new expensive boat. Much better if all the marina-based floating weekend cottages decide the old bloke living on a tarpaulin-covered 20ft GRP should pay five times as much licence as they do ... Or have I misunderstood?

  41. And probably wideboats too. Cue screams of protest from anyone who'll end up paying more so that others can pay less (relatively speaking)... 😞

  44. I don't measure my stove temperature but it would be incredibly easy to do. A 5mm drill, a 6mm tap and a cheap K type thermometer like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154735730043 Goes up to 800 Celsius. Hot firebox and preheated secondary air is the key to burning wood.

  45. I find the "when did you stop beating your mother" efforts quite amusing. For the record (and for the forth time) my position is - It is unfair that anyone who does not bring a boat onto CRT waterways should have to pay licence fee. - and I have never suggested that this unfairness can or should be corrected. I can't understand why anyone should get themselves so worked up about this.
