  3. It's been a long time since we had a proper Winter spell, a couple of Beasts from the East is about all we have had in the last 10 years. Starting from about Wednesday onwards, it really does look more likely that an extended cold spell could hit the UK for the first time since 2010. By next weekend, the temps will struggle to get above freezing in the daytime, and plummet overnight. We will have snow, how much and how long it lasts is an unknown as yet. In 2009 I was iced in for 13 weeks, in 2010, 2 months(2 locations in Central London so not quite as cold...slight thaw on 17th December). There is probably a large amount of boaters havnt seen a winter with the potential of this one so..... Stock up on coal, gas, diesel. Get your pumpout asap. Think about secondary glazing if you dont have double glazing. Fill your water tank. Make sure you dont block your vents. ...just a heads up.

  18. Right, I finally made it yesterday after a month off the boat doing me family stuff. Came down (and up) from Long Itchington yesterday, after a late start just made it for dark and came straight in pub. I like it. I think I very much like it. It’s a good pub. Thought it might be big and soulless but it’s a small gaff with a proper pub feel to it. Sadly I might have to stay longer than I thought, while I wait to get some coal. But hey, I’ll cope til Monday. £4.40 a pint which hurts, but the beers are ace and kept in proper top condition. Would I make a long detour again to get to it? Perhaps not, but it’ll always be on my stop over places should I be this way again. 👍👍👍

  22. This was the view from our back deck on 6 December 2010. Only stuck for 7 weeks as previous couple of weeks was mostly river. And this is 6 February 2009 in Hartford Marina

  24. You seem to be having a lot of problems with your cassettes. Time to install a pump out perhaps 🙂. Sorry, couldn't resist !

  25. My understanding is the OP wants this continuous, rock solid, bullet proof-reliable high speed connection for eight hours a day whilst actually cruising along, which could be anywhere. I don't think it is possible.

  32. It's good that you like it after all our suggestions! Sounds like you might have time to try Warwick's other hostelries as well. It's worthwhile in my view making the hike over to the Fourpenny Shop and the Old Post Office on West St. It's a hard life......

  35. No reason not to but it is important to top up with the required water-antifreeze mix in central heating systems although in a pumped system it may well mix itself. On testing. I don't know the density of modern long life antifreeze so unless someone more knowledgeable comes along to tell us be a bit wary with antifreeze hydrometers/testers. In the days when the cheap antifreeze had a high proportion of ethanol in it the glycol testers always showed a weak mixture (which would be true a couple of months on because the ethanol had evaporated away, but from new the density was far less so it gave a false reading.

  40. Definitely West country. Janners use it all the time.. 'Where we going to now ?' 'Any idea where I put that screwdriver to?' 'Any idea where Asders is to? Is it near the Cwop?' And so on.

  43. Whilst this is lovely to know, and useful for a 17th century farmer, it bears very little resemblance other than the term raddle(which was a harness, not a paint). To develop a red non porous topcoat red oxide type finish with non slip benefits was new to the paint and narrowboats. Phil managed it. ...and someone else tried to copy it.

  46. Why. Without landlords you wont have homes. I have rented, bought , bought to rent, rented while being a landlord, been an involuntary landlord ,and recently made myself voluntarily homeless while renting out a property to others, rather than end their lease and inconvenience them. Its not simple.

  47. First point. Above Oxford (Kings lock and up to Lechlade) the locks are balance beam type with no hydraulics so it is obviously possible, while there is no lock keeper in attendance, to just open one gate and go in through the single gate. The locks are not actually 14ft wide they are all wider than that. Second point. Hydraulic locks (Godstow down to Teddington). The reason the EA do not permit vessels to pass through single gates or gates which have not been fully opened is that a gate strike would damage the hydraulic ram. It isn't about damage to gates themselves or leakage it is about causing damage to the rams and associated fittings. It is also rather unusual for a hydraulic lock to have one gate fully open while the other stays shut. Generally (not always) they open at more or less the same speed. Out of lock keeper hours when public power is in operation there is nothing to prevent people from opening the gates as much or as little as they wish but it is bad practice. Gates should always be opened all the way regardless of size of vessel.

  48. If you buy ''neat stuff'' don't mix it with tap water especially if it's hard water. Buy distilled water or use rain water which is distilled and just filter it through a cloth first. Or thawed ice from a fridge.
