  13. I can see the principal, but may question the efficiency of the positioning on the skin tank, may of been better to add another skin tank on the opposite swim for the motor?? also with the base plate being 10mm as opposed to the side plate 6mm. Then again a nice looking large copper rad would look good, with a car type air duct, maybe Ricky could develop a radiator and an air duct system with his car tuning background. If you went a bit faster, maybe your prop would of sliced through the weed like a hot knife through butter👍😂

  16. This ^ Because there are no official registration documents for canal boats it is all too easy to fabricate an advert. Over the years there have been several cases of fraudulent adverts for boats. Some of these are stolen, get a quick repaint then put up for sale at a ridiculously low price. One infamous case involved the then owner of a hire boat company who got into financial difficulty and sold one of the companies' boats to three different people. When the court case was resolved the first buyer got the boat and the other two lost their money. Multiple cases of fraud were also involved. There were other boats involved in that case as well. The old adage: "If it looks too good to be true then it is." Buyer beware.

  17. I realize the original post is a bit old and if she were in bad shape she would have most likely given up the ghost by now or hopefully been put up for repair before so. This is a picture from around 2005 showing the correct posture of this vessel, and a close up of the stern from the same picture. While I have almost zero knowledge about canal boat engines, I have worked on marine engines. my best guess is its the engine coolant discharge, or likely an exhaust / coolant discharge combination. It appears to me in the picture exhaust is coming from the starboard side in the general location of the hole. This vessel at the time of my picture belonged to and was the residence of my father in law. He sold it quite a few years back, about 10 years ago I think. At the time It was moored in one of the spots very close to the Tesco car park. I have not been there in years, but if recall correctly there was a foot path from the car park over to the canal and it was literally 1 or 2 moorings away from that path. Comfrey, Bollington - this sounds vaguely familiar, I think my wife might have memories of it having that written on it. I believe its panel sign was Comfrey, Grand Union when I was on it. Jim

  19. There's no real reason why bands should be playing in a residential area after 11pm. Two 40 minute sets starting at 9.15 is quite enough leaving room for conversation afterwards. We used to wind up doing three sets as we got bored stiing around for an hour between playing. PAs have got huge now, and both bands and audiences have been conditioned to equate volume with quality. I'm not sure anyone has ever asked the punters what they really want - it's like background music in restaurants, no-one likes it, no-one ever asks the staff to turn it up, but we just get lumbered with it.

  25. Gorgeous weather over the weekend, so time for more progress. The front cabin top section was only tacked in place, so that needed to get fully welded in. This meant working up on the roof, welding and grinding. Not something that bothers me at all, but I did wonder about how many permits I'd need to do this on an industrial site (5, if you're wondering...) Flux core MIG (gasless) is the chosen weapon as wind would pose a problem for standard MIG and gas bottles are a right pain to lug around. To minimise distortion the weld bead needs to be made of 1-2" long runs, then you do another bit somewhere else, then come back, hopefully distributing the heat relatively evenly across the panel. Same drill to weld the sides of the front bit of cabin to the rest of it. Gasless MIG gets a bad reputation, but it can turn out reasonable ish results with minimal faff. This is without cleaning off the flux coating or dressing the weld, and i'm by no means a pro. Next it was time for Windows update. The blanks that were fitted needed seaming in, yet again more gasless MIG action made of 1-2" runs. I've also got the settings slightly lower than you'd want for structural work (like on the hull) as this helps to minimise distortion too. And there it is. 3 windows nearly fully welded up (a couple of bits need a backing plate to help to fill the gap), with pretty minimal distortion if any. Not at all difficult, just quite time consuming! g!

  29. Wise words indeed. The mud on some winter towpaths can get biblical. Thought I had lost the better half a few times over the years but she always managed to dig herself out. Did mention the idea of her lock wheeling tonight......... I have received "The Stare". Ho hum, another present idea binned. Perhaps the chrome windlass is back on the table. 🤔

  37. If a boat floats, has an engine that goes, and is just about habitable then I expect lots of people will pay £15k, so its worth £15k. In terms of investment, purchase cost, cost to renovate and then potebtial sale value then it might only be worth 5k but thats not how it works. Boats are not an investment, they are for boating, living on, or doing crazy restoration projects on 😀

  40. Someone's project boat. They have now realised the enormous cost and amount of work needed, for a boat that will never be worth what it cost to do. Now looking for a mug to take it on.

  43. I've been in a few pubs where there are notices that the outside drinking area closes at 9pm or 10 pm, so this isn't that unusual. And perhaps the same people don't have eyes and ears to see for themselves! If people are moving into a new area they really ought to do their own research. I certainly wouldn't rely on a solicitor to pick up something like this.

  46. Is there actually a “boating community”? The term implies some degree of uniformity and cohesion, but apart from the few small groups of boaters who seem to travel and moor together, boaters are defined more by their differences than by their common attributes.
