  3. On the same principle as seems common for the GU tunnels, they could also fix the booking at the start of the day. In this case the day on the notice starts at 06:00, so from then to 08:00 or 09:00 (can't remember how long it takes) would seem a sensible booking window when traffic will be at its lightest so navigation will be least problematic for them.

  8. That is exactly what I have against much of what Victron are up to. Fit a decent switch between panel and controller and you do not even have to to find your phone. The modern assumption that everyone has, wants, or can use a smart phone seems deigned to deny certain sectors of society the use of products or services. My non-smart mobile does not have Bluetooth and is cost so little it is no great drama if dropped in the cut or damaged. It may surprise many people but not everyone can use smartphones unless they are happy for everything they and other say in the vicinity of the phone to be transmitted to Apple/Google for analysis and profit. It Victron wanted to that feature could be provided by a simple push button. It is just another example of toys for boys and minimizing the cost of manufacture. <<Rant off>>

  9. We came down as a pair last Thursday & the male volockie at the bottom lock seemed a lovely bloke, but was struggling with the gates etc. What did amuse me was the female lockie who suddenly appeared(no help). It was a shambles at the bottom lock with boats coming up in the way of us coming out.We came out together & then I let the other boat go first through the waiting boats. The lady lockie then looked at me & said,"Now you follow him".I did say what else would you expect me to do,go back into the lock ??🤷🏻‍♀️I know it was sarky but I couldn't help myself after such an obvious comment...

  32. There is plenty of tidal influence at Torksey so it would take a much worse drought to influence pumping into the Fossditch. But you might be more concerned, now Naughty Cal doesn't have a boat, that the number of boat movements on the Fossditch has reduced by some 50% and I dare say if nothing changes that navigation will soon heal over due to lack of use.

  33. Why are CaRT entertaining this guy? Any boats on there during this move, if they are hit or have to stop because of his movement need to Twitter CaRT, they seam to respond more to Twitter I’ve found then email.

  34. Should be there by car late morning, have offers from a number of boats from a trip on the parade. Not got my bib and brace or neckerchief though but then neither will the boat owners whose boats I may go out on.

  43. @Tony1 has mentioned possible limitations, depending on your circumstances. What constraints are you under? How close do you need to be to food shops? Walking distance, cycling distance, useable bus service, or will you have a car/motorbike available? Pub/club house/social stuff of interest, or not? Maintenance and engineering support on site required? Water/elsan/pumpout/gas/coal/diesel on site? The later could be a problem, if you are relying on fuel boats and we get a big freeze, so having them on site is useful. Some ideas on these may spark more suggestions from folk who know the Shroppie well. Unfortunately, I can't help. Never stayed at a Marina there and only dropped in to one for some chandlery stuff some years ago. Jen

  45. I spent nearly 4 months at Swanley Bridge in the winter of 2020/2021, and I must say the staff there were really nice and helpful. There is a water outlet within a few feet of each boat, and each boat has a handy electrical hookup, and they sell coal and gas. Its a lovely location too, and within cycling distance of Nantwich. There isnt a clubhouse or cafe/bar as with many posh marinas, so the social mixing is not as frequent, but that suits some people anyway. I must say I enjoyed staying there over the winter, and I was sorry to leave, but of course I'm not a marina dweller- I was there to get some work done and it ended up dragging out for months. Tattenhall also seemed a nice place as well when I visited- the staff seemed very nice, and they have a nice cafe and bar with social events if that's your thing, although the chandlery items available seemed very limited. Only issue for me with Tattenhall is there's not much around- the village of Tattenhall itself has one useful shop, so if you stay there you'll want a car really, or else be ok with regular 40 minute bus trips up to chester.

  46. The limiting dimension on most of the northern canals seems to be draught at the moment! More seriously, the Ribble Link maximum beam is governed by the rotating tidal gate, not the locks.

  47. On a positive note if you time it right and can push against the last of the tide from Chiswick you won't arrive at Limehouse during the 3rd and 4th hours after HT when tidal run is at its maximum.
