  2. Almost certainly 1 paid CRT employee and 5 volunteers, especially when you see the ages they look. Something similar to this appeared on Facebook a few years ago when a group of us (all volunteers) were cutting the offside vegetation. We'd moved to the towpath to stop for some lunch and a nearby moorer photographed us standing around. He wrote something derogatory like 'this is what we pay our licence fee for'. Some people seize every opportunity to have a go at CRT and I agree much of the time it's justified (especially with the erection of unnecessary signs). And I have to admit I did find this photo of the sign erection funny 🙂. But a lot of CRT haters take it seriously and really do think it's their licence fees being wasted.

  5. Bagging dog shit was originally invented by dogs as a way of ensuring that their DNA is protected in the event of a silly end-of-world scenario which would probably be caused by humans. Dogs are clever. They realise that some humans would survive and they would probably have the technology available and seek ways to recreate canine companions. It's entirely probable that this can be done from waste products. Preservation is key here.

  9. It's a beautiful day guys! The engine finally runs like a new one! The fuel pump has been refurbished again.... and the main shaft has been replaced. Apparently this was the problem, not a 100 sure but ok it works finally! So happy i can enjoy my boat again 🥰. I want to thank you guys for all the advice and helpful ideas. It's been much appreciated and i am thankful for your time. Here is a video of the engine running With kind regards, Vincent

  12. My view is buy a boat a few years old (which saves sadding yet another boat to the already congested waterways and saving making 30 tonnes of new steel from a global warming pov), then get the engine that comes with it reconditioned. If it needs it. FAR more ecologically sound course of action.

  14. Have you fitted the oil pump upside down? If you have it will not pump because it is running the wrong way. It is designed to fit either way up dependant on the direction of rotation of the input shaft. There is enough oil in the box I suppose?

  15. It's hard not to draw the conclusion that composting separating toilet owners are simply lazy and cling to the green angle to obfuscate. Anyone prepared to dump their shite in public bins and their pee in the hedge or the canal should consider what a world we'd live in if everyone did that. Lazy and selfish, it only works if hardly anyone does it. Apologies to the one in a hundred who actually compost and take their pee to the Elsan, but come on - if you do that you might as well take a cassette the the elsan. It's notable how many of the shite in the bin / pee in the hedge crowd still insist on describing their toilet as composting - you're fooling nobody. Dumping your excrement is Pre-Victorian and went out of fashion due to the associated diseases like cholera - it's backward third world behaviour, it's not even remotely green.

  19. I replaced the cheap CB/Fuse with a midi fuse holder and I'm pleased to say that it looks like the problem is solved. I'll give it a week and another wash day before I'm 100% convinced but it's lookin good. I only had a 40A fuse to hand but that'll be fine until I can get a 50A as we never draw anywhere near that. Many thanks to everybody for their assistance particularly Alan for his invaluable help. Richard

  23. There's an essential difference here; dogs don't (and can't) use human toilets, so unless we exterminate them all they have to crap somewhere, and their poo has to be disposed of somehow. Humans -- notably those on boats -- can use toilets which one way or another (mains sewage, septic tanks, pump-outs. cassettes...) convey their poo to sewage treatment plants, where it is processed. Multiple methods and networks already exist to make this possible, and this is the generally accepted method for dealing with human waste. It would be sensible if dog poo was treated the same way, and the obvious method would be for people to pick it up, bag it, take it home, and empty the bag down their own toilet -- but for some reason dog owners don't do this... 😞 And adding more human poo -- semi-digested/composted or not -- to the dog poo going to incinerators/landfill seem to be going in entirely the wrong direction to me. Just because dogs do something isn't a good reason to use this as to justify humans -- who generate a *lot* more poo -- to do the same, otherwise to avoid paying to use a public toilet people would just crap on the pavement... 😉 Composting toilets used as intended -- local composting of the waste and subsequent use by the owner -- are great, you can't get much more eco-friendly. As soon as you have to collect the waste centrally and then transport it somewhere else to be "processed" -- which often seems to mean burning it or burying it in landfill -- they makes no sense ecologically or economically when you look at the big picture. Though they may still be nice for the owner, who gets all the convenience (geddit?) but outsources the problems and costs of dealing with the result...

  27. My flexible panel bought 6 years ago lasted less than 2 years, it didn't like getting hot in the sun and as it died would work for a few minutes at a time if I threw a bucket of cold water over it. I believe expansion/contraction breaks the flimsy foil joints between cells as I notice they have more these days. Hopefully they are better now, good luck.

  30. Indeed. Last year I increased the insured value of my boat to take into.account the prices increases of the last couple of years. Last week I had the BSC examination. The examiner (who is also a surveyor) suggested that my 2007 boat was still undervalued by £15k.

  32. That's correct, it's bag'n'binning that has been banned. But for the majority of composting toilet boaters that might as well be a ban, because they haven't got a legit way of disposing of the waste any more. Peter is an exception, being one of the minority (25% IIRC) who do use them properly -- and should be allowed to continue doing so 🙂

  33. Seems he connects the battery to an electric welder. I gave up at that point. Doing so might reverse the sulphation, but I don't see how it can stop plate shedding, in fact I suspect it will make it worse. It is. Plate shedding is one of the causes of cells shorting because the plate material fills the sediment traps in the bottom of the battery and literally connect the positive and negative plates. There is no way I can see it will make your battery last forever but as usual YouTube and other social media sites have little interest in the truth as long as it gets hits.

  36. Interesting... Keeping in mind the fact that separating/dessicating toilets produce tiny volumes of solid waste that builds up very slowly over long periods of time, poo bins, whoever supplies and empties them, needn't be very large or frequent along the canal to service those who enjoy the advantages of waterless toilets. A previous poster suggested that disposal facilities should not be provided because only 2% of 20,000 boat owners use them. That's only 400 which I suspect is a gross underestimate, but if the numbers are that small, the amount of partially dry humanure needing to be disposed of every month would be incredibly small.

  37. all well and good, but we are talking principles here and I didnt consider your reason valid. We still need to act on climate change, can't bury our heads in the sand.

  38. Begging your pardon, but what exactly is wrong? What I described is exactly what I and er, everyone else who's gas-safe installer actually understands the regs has installed. If you have fixed solid pipe all the way your installer did not understand and opted for belt and braces. Pretty damn sure I'm right and you are simply rude and ignorant. Interesting that Mike above even got it wrong initially and he's a certified gas plumber!

  44. A boat I've admired for it's shapely lines, but unfortunately I'd guess won't sell through a crap advert like that. "Converted from a barge" ? You'd expect a more accurate, detailed description for what is a rare and interesting boat.
