  3. Such a sad thing to happen. A 4 year old should not have been anywhere near the water unaccompanied but none of us know the circumstances and 4 year old's can be slippery blighters! There but for the Grace of God go every parent. We find that a large number of the volunteers who join us with Python, who have no boating experience, are very surprised at how shallow the canal can be. We tell them if they fall in (anywhere apart from a lock) the first thing to try and do is stand up. The looks of amazement on faces is very obvious. If the person who raised the alarm could not swim, or was perhaps another young child, they may have been doing what the advise tells them, not to go into a body of water to rescue someone. It must have been very difficult to be in that situation

  12. All deaths on the inland waterways are, more often than not, avoidable but none the less, especially to the families and friends involved tragedies. Now whilst I fully appreciate that the Canal and River Trust cannot save every life that is lost it can and does try to make people and children more aware of the dangers involved with any water. The Canal and River Trust do a completely free water safety presentation for schools and uniform groups. The take up of this absolutely free service in the ten years that I have been doing it has been abysmal from schools and groups. I attended a Welsh water safety meeting a few weeks ago as the CRT representative. There were big wigs from the fire service, RNLI and other interested parties and water users at that meeting and in amongst all the other stuff that was brought up was the fact that schools do not seem to be particularly concerned about the safety of their children which would seem to be born out by the fact that the take up of the free water safety presentations that the CRT and other bodies do has been so low. I am assured that the Canal and River Trust do contact schools but they do not seem to get many responses. I know this will bring out all the criticizers/moaners/anti CRT posters that seem to frequent this forum but the fact is that The Canal and River Trust, along with other water borne organisations, do try to do something to, at least, make people aware of the dangers associated with water.

  33. As the makers/distributors have been singularly ineffective in solving the wet wipe problems it suggest it is long time past the point legislation was/is needed.

  35. Wot mtb says. But you could insert a battery isolator switch in the link between the two batteries, so you can isolate the start battery from the leisure when you stop charging. i disagree with this. The reality is that starting an engine uses very little charge, maybe 1Ah or less. And thus as you say recharges very quickly. And then ever after that (with your proposal) the main current going to charge the domestic batteries has to route through the relay, creating heat and voltage drop. Have the VSR by all means, but prioritise the domestics by connecting the alternator supply direct to the domestic batteries (via the domestic battery isolator to keep BSS man happy).

  36. I don't need to, I have a whole gravy boat of my own already to keep my train in - gas engineering Boaters by and large, are exactly the type of people i DON'T want as customers. Tight-fisted and know it all, lol!

  41. Once again A LOT OF BMC 1.5s do NOT have issues with oil contamination by fuel. Some do however and seeing how many are in service and their age it is hardly surprising. It is something owners need to be aware of in carry out routine checks. Exactly the same applies to the Perkins 4-10x range of engines and the diesel version of the Ford push rod engine. They all use similar lift pumps and injection pumps. I would suggest that the small air cooled Listers have a far higher proportion of dilution problems compared to BMCs or almost any other engine.

  49. And biodegradable! It does not say how long they take to biodegrade, I believe it is years. I knew of a farm where they sometimes sprayed sewage sludge on the fields. The wipes are lying out in the open for months and only disappear when the cattle tread them into the mud or they blow away.
