  7. Presumably since on the whole C&RT don't cope, the few stalwart copers who do cope need repairs more often?

  10. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Narrowboat-50ft-Traditional-Stern-/194388530273?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 I am not in the market but spotted this boat on eBay recently. At only 2 years old (& 2-packed hull) it seems like it could be a good buy for someone. Obviously it isn't set up for cruising and would need some money spending to equip it for being used as a actual boat rather than a floating caravan. Anyway I thought I'd share in case it fits the bill for someone.

  12. When I fitted my bare shell out I paid £100 for the engine (ex Telecomm Sherpa BMC 1.8). Comprehensively re-conditioning the engine was all part of the enjoyment.

  15. Directional log-periodic on a pole plus a sub £20 signal finder. Probably b=get the lot for £30 or so

  22. I suspect its a home fitted job and maybe does not have the paperwork to satisfy brokers, so the owner wants shot. That might explain the price. And if so, a marinised secondary Kubota industrial engine may well be a money saving thing. I would not take the Beta as necessarily being true.

  33. I wonder if we could have some equivalent of an 'L' plate for new members, pinned to their first few posts, so old timers are reminded to cut them some slack. A new member may well be totally unaware of just how much of a bear pit this forum can be. I still can't wrap my head around why anyone would have a problem with a new member posting about a good experience from a canal business. We need more positivity on here. I note those members have not apologised. You could buy a used outboard and get yourself home with that for less than that.

  34. Well I guess that's another new member well pissed off because some didn't like their first posting. I am surprised anyone joins if they lurk a bit first and see how new members get treated

  35. Typical lift pump test. Take both the inlet and outlet pipe off. Thumb over the out let port and pump priming lever. It should hold pressure for abut 30 seconds or more. Ditto over the inlet, but this time it should hold vacuum. If this is the disk type pump, then they do clog the valves. I have cleaned they with care. Take the pump off and put witness marks on the base, body and cover so you get them all back correctly aligned. Then undo the six screws and take apart so you can see the valves and what is clogging them. When reassembling (ensure everything is lined up) just nip the screws, so the diaphragm can still move a little and use the priming lever to pull the diaphragm down while you tighten it.

  36. I've just replaced one of my lift pumps (not a BV1305). The suction on the 'presumed poorly one' was reasonable when put against the palm of my hand. The suction on the replacement one was tremendous, and when put against the palm of my hand it resulted in a 'love-bite' on my palm. A non-scientific test but there was a very noticeable difference.

  37. It's a shame there isn't an unofficial list of all the jobsworths and pillocks who are known to frequently pick on minor or even silly issues.

  40. Ventilation is only an advisory on BSC. Most boats are massively over ventilated anyway with loose fitted window glass and hatches.

  46. When I 'shot' an engine mount, I bought a set of soft mounts as advised by a Chandlers, and had no end of problems with them. Eventually, I discovered my original mounts were R & D mounts, so I phoned them up. They asked for details such as Engine, gearbox, drive coupling and boat length and specified new mounts, with the front different to the back. They were neither cheap nor horrendously expensive, but did the job wonderfully. The lesson learnt is consult the experts and you get what you pay for.

  47. However, based in Sheffield and environs, a boat over 6'10" still gives a huge cruising range. Up to Ripon, over to Liverpool, down to Nottingham, Market Harborough and almost to Burton on Trent, over to Boston. Beam isn't the only limitation, too much draft (depth below the water line), air draft (height above the water), cabin shape (square is more limiting), will affect where you can go too. Jen

  48. Needs to be less than 60 feet long as well because the tight Yerkies didnt build full length locks.😁
