  4. They are supplied already equipped with a grubby cooker, horrible loo and with special 'Old socks' air freshener. One of mine was like that for a few weeks before a nice lady thought I was worth saving. The previous lady realised that I wasn't worth the bother.

  17. I actually waved and shouted hello recently to a bloke steering his boat, full Harold Shipman look but it was the wrong Harold Shipman if you get my drift

  21. I suggested you get a voltmeter nearly a week ago. (Last thursday lunchtime). If you'd gone to the chandlery you could probably have got one straight away or they'd have it by Friday morning. It would have cost less than £10. If your wife made a fuss about it, you could have blamed me and she wouldn't have used the 'bigger boys' argument. With your voltmeter you could have checked the batteries quite easily. I too am dying to know which marina you're in. My suspicion as to your reluctance to say is that you've been exagerating how remote it is because you don't really want to put much personal effort into sorting things out. The trouble is: boats need a lot of effort, and it's never ending. I too have enjoyed your humour, but the phrase "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink" springs to mind when reading through this thread.

  23. Please stop commenting on things you clearly know nothing about. 1. This is a canal boat forum, and it is very doubtful if the oil will ever get hot enough to evaporate any water off, let alone diesel fuel. Indeed, it has been known for inland engines with oil coolers to run the oil so cool it emulsifies into a thick black sludge. (Perkins 4-10X). Your sea boats are likely to run the oil much hotter in the same engine. 2. I have yet to see any crankcase breather hose venting into the exhaust. If t did exhaust back pressure and temperature will make the crankcase pressure higher and see what happens to EGR valves on vehicles I dread to think what it would do to the oil. Originally on the vehicle version, the breather just vented into the air beside the sump. The marine version vented into the air cleaner, so simply removing the hose for the air cleaner just returning it to as originally designed. Many industrial and marine engines have internal breathers that vent from inside the rocker cover into the inlet ports in the head. Oh, and by the way, that design of engine and head was an Austin initiative that Morris got when BMC was formed. The Nuffield group (Morris) OHV engines were rather different.

  26. We've had pumped systems for 10 years on both our last boat and this one. Although we've had pump failures, we've never had the dire consequences often warned about on here. Pumps don't generally suddenly fail, we found ours gradually got noisier and noisier before failing, to the extent you'd want to change it long before complete failure. I admit a 230v one adds additional failure points on a boat, that's why we went for 12v. Our last boat had a single gravity fed radiator near the stove so we could run without pump if necessary, but never did. This stove is installed without (just connected to existing central heating circuit for ease). We also didn't want very hot exposed pipework within toddler reach which all gravity systems seem to have! As to what to do if pump fails, why not just shut all fire vents down tight? This causes our morso squirrel to die down to virtually nothing in a matter of minutes, certainly not enough time to boil the back boiler and cause the problems predicted in this thread. We've changed the pump a couple times without letting the fire go out, but as emergency, during the few minutes to let fire die down, we could run the eberspacher which also circulates through the same system. Never needed to though. We've had very very expensive 12v pumps fail in less than a year, but the most reliable we've found is a used 12v auxiliary pump from a jag. Only £20, and still going strong after 3 winters.

  29. Disconnected Waterways 25% discount if the Boat has a long term mooring, and will remain exclusively on one of the following Waterways: Bridgwater & Taunton, Monmouth & Brecon, stretches of the Montgomery Canal not connected to the main network, River Tees. So a full licence allows you to go on any of these, but if you've claimed the discount you aren't allowed to go on any other CRT waters without paying more. Yes, it was a disconnected waterway until the Ribble Link opened and now it isn't. They are still moaning about it up there!

  32. Even on many wet exhaust boats you find the water pulses out of the exhaust because of the exhaust gasses have to build up enough pressure to expel the water. At higher speeds the water does come out in a steady flow. I just did a quick calculation of likely gas flows from a 1500 CC engine at 1200 RPM and allowing an 80% volumetric efficiency and before allowing for the temperature rise and the contribution of the burned fuel it came out at about 720 litres of gas per minute. So allowing for the heat and contribution from the diesel, I guess we are looking at may be 1000 litres per minute. How easily will that flow through a (say) 1.5 bore pipe with bends in it. One must accept that water injected will cool and contract the gasses, but we are still left with more than 720 litres per minute. I can't see how some back pressure can not be avoided close to the engine, and the last thing you want is hot exhaust gasses flowing into the crankcase. To visualise 720 litres, think about a stack of oil cans 12 wide and 12 high.

  43. I wasnt suggesting that people didnt understand what carpeting up the walls might mean, i meant didnt maybe understand the reason why someone might want carpet on the walls. Like you say, some like it, some dont. I think it looks great. Many thanks to those that did offer some positive help.

  47. Having spent a week at Thrupp whilst waiting for the K&A to reopen during August, the moorings are mostly vacated by 9.30, but full again by 3pm. You need to be early to get a spot. Get the train from Lower Heyford into Oxford, loads of secure moorings available. However I also had no problem getting a mooring in Oxford after I got tired of the Thames. Southcote lock!

  49. No I think 1kwh including heating the water. Depends on the size of the washer and wash temperature I guess but our compact one is 1.6kw and the heating cycle takes about 20 minutes for a 40c wash
