  4. As a general rule, never go for the electric version of anything that heats up. Heating stuff demands a lot of energy, canes your batteries and 12V heating energy is feeble. Kettles are a good eample. The 170W kettle performance will be pathetic. Use a kettle on a gas ring.

  5. The Yonne agin. The locks get wider, yet more primitive, on the way towards the Seine. The freight barge seen leaving is pushing another, occupying the full length of the lock when inside. To moor up on entering from above, the bow is brought to rest against the vertical bit of wall just before the lower gates, which involves some fine calculation on the steerer's part, being 2 x 38.5 metres back from the point of contact. These boats are built of thinner metal than narrow boats are made of, and they had 500 tonnes of grain on board. On this pair the captain and his wife took turns up at the bow end, communicating through loudspeaker connection as they made their way on.

  7. 30k seems cheap to me, it’s a boat I’ve seen a few times, and I’d love it.

  13. It looked freshly dumped of you know what I mean!….had the same at norbury last year….one bin was full…bags were dumped on the ground yet loads of space in some of the other bins…I just put some gloves on and had it tidy in 5 mins. The reality is some people including boaters are scruffy arses that can’t be bothered and hope someone else sorts the mess out.

  23. I sent Jason a link to the thread and told him he can't afford it 😃 - he's too busy with his yacht repair business in Mallorca anyway though. A couple of views of Jason and Mike Carter at the bottom of the Hanwell thick taking two joeys for a job on the river. Johnny Dakin is on the hopper behind. Also coincidently we saw Silverlit at St Symphorien last week - Silverlit won the tug of war between the two at Brentford as I recall. Tam

  35. At over 10 amps draw, I bet the socket and plug will get hot and suffer a shortened life, quite apart from the effect that current draw would have on the batteries. I would suggest that you probably only have one domestic battery on a boat that size, so stick with the kettle on the gas.

  42. No, because you use the same hand to wind down as change gear, one after the other. It helps to wear a hard hat to avoid splitting your head open on the rods on the ceiling!

  45. Based on yesterday, think the main reason for RCR's engineers defaulting to "you might need a new part for this" isn't skillsets but their rules of engagement Spent last night in the engine bay with the original engineer sent by RCR (he said he called me back after hearing from nearby marinas I was calling round that there was a bloke stuck nearby, not from being hurried up by RCR!) Yes, he did know how to open up and remove a gearbox, but they didn't want him to do that on the first (free) visit. OK, they've got a business to run, but I'd have happily paid for an hour or two of him opening stuff up there and then, and it would have made life a lot easier for me afterwards. So RCR's original proposed process was "do basic diagnostic checks only on first visit to confirm that it was some sort of fault with the gearbox or possibly the drive plate, order replacement gearbox and wait for it to arrive, then book chargeable date to get gearbox out and check it and drive plate. then order drive plate if necessary (and not use gearbox) then arrange a return visit to actually fit it". Which is not the best way of doing things.... It turned out to be the drive plate which is an annoying thing to discover having [i] damaged the apparently condemned but actually fine gearbox trying to do my own diagnosis and [ii] waited 10 days for a part I didn't actually need but at least all parts now sourced for a lot less than the new gearbox RCR lined up for me! Can see how it can still work for people if they've got parts cover as part of their deal with RCR, and tbf I can believe they generally don't actually fit the expensive new parts if it turns out they're not needed after doing a bit more work to open things up, but I think I'll be taking the "call local marinas and ask for engineer recommendations" route if I have issues next year, because that would actually be less inconvenient.

  46. There was alot of filming done and most of it was cut in the end. I think originally it was supposed to be two episodes(could have misunderstood that though) I did make the point to the director that Denver really was key and should be included but obviously fell on deaf ears. It would have been foolhardy to do the crossing on that boat with the celebs/ crew.

  47. RAccording to some it is no longer necessary to work in Lunnon, because you can do it all from miles away "at home". Those who are doing this and those who have been furloughed no longer need a boat to live on and they have not been near it since lockdown started so they are getting rid. Perhaps. N

  48. This is the problem. In this case it would be a easy thing to sort out by installing a low cost cctv system. Then make a big song and dance on the local news. Followed by new blue signs ,grrr no household rubbish. Simple.😜👍

  49. Of course they should pay their way. Same as they pay for the pavements they walk on to get there. It's called taxation. That's what it means, a general levy to pay for the stuff that is for the general good, available to all if not used by all. But you don't want to pay taxes, and there is no other way to charge for stuff like this, so you vote for people who promise only to charge you for stuff that's really important, like... er... HS2 (so really important folk can go from Brum to London half an hour quicker), or lots of lovely armaments (that don't let an entire army keep an airport open but keep a lot of politicians very, very rich), or endless support for banks (so they can pay millions in bonuses while closing branches), or... I won't go on or you'll think I'm some kind of communist*... Politics, as I've said before, is important. You get what you pay for. You want to keep the canal system, fine. Vote for people who think that sort of thing matters, not for people who measure everything by its financial return. It's a democracy, and the people have spoke. *I'm not, by the way.
