  8. I presume the survey you quote is the one taken on the "Compost Toilets for Boats and Off Grid Living" facebook group? If so that survey is about 6 months out of date. We took part in that survey and at the time we did bag and bin as previous advice from CRT allowed us to do so. Seeing as how we are no longer allowed to do this we have changed our habits and now store the composting poo and then take it back to our house and put it on the compost heap. We know quite a few fellow composters who used to bag and bin. All have changed their habits as a result of the new rules, some do like us, some have replaced their toilets with cassette versions, some are hot composting (a much quicker process). None of them continue to bag and bin even though until the end of the year we are allowed to do so. So you need to find some new figures to massage if you wish to continue to slag us off.

  14. Cruised the W&E last month, despite all the doom and gloom we heard (and read) we enjoyed it. Occasionally had to go into neutral then reverse but weedhatch clear at the end of the day.

  17. You have got as far as Littlebourough and are now giving up before the good bits?. A short flight of locks will get you to the summit which is wonderful (visitor moorings one long down after the summit) You can then go down to Todmorden, a very lovely bit of canal and Tod is a good and interesting town. The veggie pasties from Tod Almighty are great. Superb hill walking. Ideally do not go back down the "18" till the kids go back to school, and If you can book the volunteer to help, he will get you down in 5 hours or less. Overnight at the Rose of Lancaster or Boat and Horses and make an early start to get the Newton Heath bit done early. If you don't like the Rochdale 9 then going up the Ashton onto the Peak Forest can be a very good alternative.

  20. I moor there and I pay £2316 pa. for a 57ft boat. Price has not gone up in 5 years. This price includes a 5% reduction for prompt payment. Hope this helps. The website is https://thefennymarina.co.uk/

  23. We went up the Stourbridge a couple of weeks ago, having gone out of Droitwich and up to Stourport, and very nice it was too. Water was crystal clear, saw very few boats until we got to Delph. Not so many places to stop, but it was during the mad heatwave temperatures so we were being picky trying to find places under trees, I think we ended up stopping about half a mile short of the bottom Stourbridge lock. All the locks were easy to work, and we thought the Stourbridge flight was quite an interesting flight to work up. Didn't seem to be an issue finding good moorings on the S&W. There were a lot stopped near Wolverley, and the pub looked ok. We stopped a bit further on than Cookley, more towards Whittington lock, as we wanted to walk to Kinver for a day and had a feeling that the visitor moorings nearer there would be rammed (they were). Very quiet and plenty of space where we stopped. We'll be going back to do it in a more leisurely fashion soon as we only had a limited time, so were putting in some long days.

  25. Yes, it's a rip-off 😞 But it won't change until governments decide that consumers should have precedence over manufacturers, so the UK government is certainly unlikely to do anything to change this -- somewhere like Germany or Scandinavia or France might. If only we were in some kind of alliance with them which could force the manufacturers to play nicely... 😞

  29. In my experience most of the grot is from boaters. Over the years I have liberated many dumped batteries and weighed them in - enough to buy a stainless steel chimney. As for locks, smart card locks and other elaborate arrangements your average dumper will just lob their rubbish over the fence.

  32. Only if you have the upgrade that also knocks in the mooring stakes and ties your lines to them....

  35. I was pretty impressed with his attitude and hands on stuff. No showboating, just getting on with it. And he is setting up a company at the same time that will employ people. Not bad for a 21 year old! He didn't just do the cosmetics but also worked on sorting the engine and electrics. He also had waders to jump in the cut to clear the prop.

  39. Like Nissan did with the mobile phone app for the Leaf - it used a unique identifier : it just happened to be the VIN, which of course is visible through the windscreen

  40. People threw them away because they generate bugger all, and drive the owners mad with noise and vibration.

  44. No doubt I’ll get grief for this….In my opinion widebeams seem to attract a certain type of owner…and they tend to only think of themselves…they don’t even comprehend they may meet a similar sized boat approaching from the opposite direction. The thought that their boat may not be suitable for a given waterway is rarely a consideration.

  49. A bit late to the party, but...chips. Two options: Oven: Preheat the oven and a baking tray oiled with your preferred oil. I use olive for nearly all oven-related tasks. Slice a potato (or more) into chip-sized chips. Place chips onto tray, season heavily with salt, pepper, garlic, thyme and rosemary, and mix thoroughly. Stick them in the oven for ~30-40 minutes, turning once. Remove. Pat dry. Munch. Shallow fry Slice thinly Heat large and heavy frying pan on medium-high on the hob, oiled with an appropriate high-temperature oil. Rapeseed, grapeseed, avocado, etc. Enough oil to half-submerge chips, ideally. Place in pan, season heavily with salt, stir thorough Fry until cooked through and browned, turning every ~5 minutes. Season near end with pepper, garlic, thyme and rosemary Remove. Pat dry. Munch. You can do thicker chips in the pan, but you'll want to parboil them first. Absolutely no excuse to buy frozen oven chips, which are a poor substitute to any real sort of chip. Freshly-made every time - good results are easy after a bit of refinement. Sweet potato chips are also delicious. Cook for a little less time, and I'd recommend seasoning with salt, pepper, garlic and smoked paprika.
