  1. Saw this on a different forum but thought it applied here quite well, substitute anything you like for light bulb............. Q: How many group members does it take to change a light bulb ? 1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed. 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently. 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs. 17 purists who use candles and are offended by light bulb discussions. 6 to argue over whether it's 'lightbulb' or 'light bulb'. Another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid. 22 to tell THOSE 6 to stop being jerks. 2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is 'lamp'. 15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that 'light bulb' is perfectly correct. 49 to post memes and gifs (several are of Michael Jackson eating popcorn with the words added, “I’m just here for the comments.”) 19 to post that this page is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a light bulb page. 11 to defend the posting to this page saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant here. 24 to discuss the merits of LED/swirly fluorescent light bulbs 44 to claim LED and fluorescent bulbs will kill you. 12 to post F. 8 to ask what F means. 7 to post 'Following' but there's 3 dots at the top right that means you don't have to. 3 to say "can't share" 2 to reply "can't share from a closed group" 36 People to post pics of their own light bulbs. 15 People to post "I can't see S$%^!" and use their own light bulbs. 6 to report the post or PM an admin because someone said "f÷×$" 4 to say "Didn't we go through this already a short time ago?". 13 to say "Do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs". 1 to bring politics into the discussion by adding that (insert politician of choice) isn't the brightest bulb. This usually takes place within the first three comments. 50 more to get into personal attacks over their political views. 5 admins to ban the light bulb posters who took it all too seriously. 1 late arrival to comment on the original post 6 months later and start it all over again.

  7. 1 asking how many CaRT contractors does it take to change a light bulb? 5 explaining how light bulbs were always changed much more quickly when there were Lengthsmen who carried a few light bulbs with them. 8 omplaining about the new CaRT slogan being put on signs everywhere "It's Brighter by Water". 2 saying that when you phone up the non emergency CaRT number to report a burnt out bulb the person on the other end doesn't know what a light bulb is, 5 people saying that light bulbs will be banned and how the waterways will be completely ruined without them. 4 people saying that LED's work just as well. 5 people saying that they don't care and will continue using light bulbs. 4 people saying that LED's will mean the end of light bulb jokes. 5 people complaining that the kids today don't understand light bulb jokes. 4 people saying that this is a good thing as light bulb jokes were never that funny anyway. 7 complain about light bulbs being put in tunnels, like at Newbold and how this has ruined the tunnel. The same seven later complain about burnt out light bulbs in tunnels not being replaced and how this has ruined the tunnel. 9 saying that light bulbs are much better than LED's for tunnel lights. 1 asking if a tunnel light is the same as a light in a tunnel? 15 explaining the difference between a tunnel light and a light in a tunnel. 1 complaining that the 15 are being really patronising. 15 saying that no they weren't. Another 15 saying that yes they were. 1 mod banning 31 members. 7 people saying the mod was being too zealous. 7 people saying that the mod wasn't. 1 mod resigning. 5 people saying that they are leaving CWDF because of all this fuss. 5 people posting on CWDF a few days later. This is a purely imaginary CWDF thread. Any resemblance to actual threads and members is purely coincidental.

  11. You carry on filling the lock, saves water, rather than dumping half a lock.

  12. Yup I do that, it's polite and saves water, why fill or empty an empty lock when there's a boat monents away!

  14. When attending a Lucas training course on alternators in the days of the 10 and 11 AC this was raised with the trainer. Bear in mind this was early days with alternators and most cars were still positive earth and both positive and negative earth alternators were available. The trainer says that they had investigated this and concluded that the welding but was just an excuse and the real cause of alternator failure during body work was idiots not checking the earth and connecting that battery in reverse for that particular vehicle. Hence, this belief gets a foothold. However, for the sake of twisting the master switches or disconnecting a battery terminal, my view is better safe than sorry.

  22. You either didn't think this through, or have a very simplistic view of the world. Your suggestion would set up enough precedents to empty half the prisons and tie up the courts for years. You can't delegate the responsibility for an individual's actions to a third party. Licensed or not, everybody is responsible for their own actions. Yes, why do you seem to think this doesn't apply to Hire Boaters? You are clearly emotionally upset about something, and are letting that to drive clear thinking out of your head. I'd suggest your question is personal, irrelevant and none of your business. Finally, let's ignore the differences between Criminal and Civil law for a moment (as I suspect this will drag on) I know of many hire companies (members here) who do not hire to just anyone. And most hire companies don't put limiters on boat throttles because it could prove lethal. Which I view as a far more serious set of circumstances to any of the ones you have listed.

  26. If you can post the Thornycroft model number, or photos of the existing engine, then someone may be able to identify the base engine. Even though the model may well be out of production it is very likely that an identical base engine can be found, and the gearbox and other auxiliary components can be transferred across. But whatever solution you eventually find, I agree with others that your first priority is to move the boat to a safer place where it can be left. And that means a tow, bow hauling, or a temporary outboard attachment. Personally I would go for the bow hauling, especially if you can mobilise a couple of helpers, as it will be the quickest option.

  41. Not saying that at all but there are occasions, such as when winding on a windy day where you need to give a blast of high revs. In a car or van the limiter is a speed limiter preventing you exceeding say 60 mph, on a boat it would be a revs limiter. What if you are on a river heading for a weir and need a bit of full throttle to turn against the pull?

  48. I think that the batteries are goosed. 12.64v after a 7 hour run suggests not fully charged by a long way or duff batteries. You will always get some volt drop to a fridge, the starting current is quite high and if the battery voltage is not optimal it won't kick in.
