  6. When I was on my own, Christmas was the one time you could relax into unsociability without upsetting people. I made the mistake of accepting an invitation once as they were so nice about it I felt I couldn't refuse, and spent the whole day feeling like an intruder. After that, I bought myself the presents I wanted and spent a couple of happy days playing with them. What it did show, though, was that ninety per cent of the human race are generous and caring people who worry about those they see as lonely. I think this is a good thing.

  14. Well this fool is of the opinion that if a specific question is asked, it is courteous to give a specific answer and not simply state “nanny knows best, don’t do it”. Which seems to be the go-to answer on here for various things. Of course the answers to such questions can be supplemented with safety advice, but ultimately only the OP knows his capabilities, ability to learn new stuff and apply common sense, and his own risk-averseness. I would be somewhat surprised if it needed to be mansplained to him that mains electric shocks can be dangerous.

  15. I just take a book. Most people these days are unused to them and appear frightened by the sight of some weirdo reading one, so they keep away. At least, I think it's that.

  16. So he hasn't been forced to stop the canal being used for boat trips because of lack of insurance, he's stopped the trip boat using it after presumably a public funded restoration and shut it off in a sulk because he can't get planning permission to build a marina, and thinks that stopping the use of it will pressurise the council into changing the use of his land from purely agricultural. So the canal doesn't breach the covenant, the farmer wants to. Not all farmers are selfish obnoxious people, but he seems a fairly good example of the breed. Not a particularly analytical bit of reporting?

  24. Why? If somebody had asked which boat you were on and that information was given out how happy would you be? If you wouldn't mind then so be it, but it does seem a shame that 'celebrities' cannot enjoy anonymity or even some peace on a holiday. Just the nature of the beast I suppose but actively searching for information where they will be is a bit creepy. Just to gain a selfie perhaps but how bladdy awful that would be!

  25. I'm surprised the trust hadn't got some kind of agreement over the use of the canal before they, again presumably, spent a small fortune restoring it. I don't expect the farmer contributed much. Could there be some historic rights attached to the canal line? They all went through someone's property when they got built, and it might be interesting to check if the farm ever had the actual right to fill it in and use it as a field because he wouldn't have originally owned that bit of land.

  32. Great images. Showing well the run down state, but in a strange way more attractive than the clinically tidy area today. Not that I've been there this past 20yrs!

  34. As Keith says, if you're having to ask how to do it you shouldn't be doing it yourself and anyone foolish enough to advise you how to do it on an internet forum should take note too. Don't mess around with mains electrical installations unless you know what you're doing.

  40. As "engineering work" (excavation of soil) was required to reinstate the canal so a change of use / Planning permission should probably have been secured. I was told by my LA that I needed permission as 'engineering works' were needed to fill in a hole 8" deep by about 10' x 6', but it was pointed out to them that were potholes in the road bigger than that. They were trying everything to stop me reverting back to agricultural land and to avoid me taking them to court. The Planning officer lied on a number of occasions, did not know the planning laws, and said she had taken legal advice from the County Solicitor when she hadn't. They really did wriggle. Eventually my MP wrote to the chief exec telling him to stop arguing, pay compensation for my costs and inconvenience and let the matter drop.

  41. Moor before the swing bridge ,close to the bootle arms on the way in. You can follow the track through the farm if you want to go the pub. Then set off about quarter to nine in the morning of the day of your trip, so you can open the bridge at half nine on Wango lane. Stop for services at Litherland, if needed for pump out or Elsan ,as they are expensive at Liverpool marina. That should get you to top of locks about one fifteen. You will then arrive in salthouse dock about half two. Unless you have a cruiser stern ,you will want to reverse into the mooring ,otherwise you are facing a large wall. Make sure you know where your mooring is, as it’s hard to see the numbers on the end of the jetties. We are there now and it’s a fantastic trip, have your camera ready as you sail past the liver buildings etc, and there were lots ofvlockies there at first lock to help and advise if you want them. They may ring you on the day to find out when you will be arriving ,so have phone handy. Look at the map to see where you go coming out of last lock at Mann island. Wish we could stay longer.

  42. There may be a 'bit of both'. Councils cannot change covenants, but they would need to give planning permission for change of use. Planning permission does not overide a covenant - a covenant is superior to PP It is the land registry who are able to remove covenants with agreement with the person (or their decendants) who originally applied it, You are then awarded a "Deed of Release of a Restrictive Covenant" If you cannot contact the original covenantee, the last course of action would be an application to the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber). They have power to vary or discharge the restrictive covenant, but will usually make an order that you pay compensation to the covenantee. In calculating this sum they will have regard to the increased land value and will normally order that you pay about 30% of the value the land has increased by. The canal had been filled in and was actually part of his farmland, in 1999 it was dug out and it back into water, presumably it will still be shown on any deeds as under his ownership and as farmland. If he is allowing public access onto what is legally his land then he needs insurance, but covenants do not allow it Covenants are never simple.

  44. You are also ignoring how it was run for those hours 10,000 hours on a hire boat and 10,000 hours at idle out of gear to charge batteries will produce very different engine conditions, its the hire boat for me.

  47. I think you've mistaken them for the Tory party, or at least the current cabinet. If not, that must qualify as one of the contenders for cretinous post of the year, and shows the stupidity and generalisation of someone with slightly less than the intelligence of a paving slab. Remarkable. Well done. ETA don't bother to reply as you're obviously not worth bothering with, so I won't again. Cheers.
