  1. It does. Which of the YouTube plebs did it recently and tried to use it as a staircase lock?!

  10. Good to hear the good comments about Farmers' Bridge-P used to do these on a Monday when he was volleying(after litter picking the canals). As a boater,he always asked what help was needed & did as asked-apart from when some boaters didn't have a clue & he 'assisted' their thinking. Those folk who know the Brum litter pickers on Aquarius,Albert passed to the great marina in the sky recently. He was mid 80s & a smashing bloke.RIP Albert.

  11. That's the problem. When your year is up they send a lorry round to take all the culture to the next place.

  12. One of the latest messages by CRT is their new towpath markings where speeding cyclists are encouraged to slow down. The minority will always ignore such signs and asking them to stay kind may be considered laughable by them. Instead of wasting funds on signage policing the code by CRT staff should be more a priority.

  13. Let’s not make something out of this that it isn’t. The majority of volunteers are good, honest and helpful people. On the odd occasion you get a grumpy, irritating, awkward, miserable know it all that wants to rule the world. Hold your breath, count to ten, you have ten digits on your hands to make it easier, and have a laugh as you move on.

  17. 13AY 1087 is the best ref to get a match, 13 mm A profile, 1087mm long. When you find the replacement, buy 2, they don't eat anything and you'll have a spare. Whilst looking, if you've not got a spare for the service alternator, it's worth getting one of those too.

  19. What's a full timer? Presumably you mean full time CCers rather than full time liveaboards? As Julian said, you won't find many CCers on rivers in winter because you need a safe flood proof mooring, but there are still plenty of people with moorings living aboard. If you're living or cruising on rivers you need to get out of that ditch dweller canal mindset where you can just tie up anywhere and if something goes wrong you can just chuck a rope to someone on the towpath. You need to be more aware of weather forecasts, currents and other river traffic. There's a bit more to boating and living aboard boats on rivers than on canals.

  22. Today in 2007 on the Marne Saone canal. The canal locks were being automated but not all were finished. We had to wait in this lock until the eclusier arrived on his moped. They are called itinerant as they travel with you.

  31. It's just a way of avoiding being sued for responsibility if there's a serious accident. Sadly, these days covering your backside against ridiculous and expensive court cases is necessary. It's the same reason for banning mooring adjacent to towpath renovation - if you trip up, it's your fault as you weren't supposed to be there. It may be a waste of money, but it's a smaller waste than lawyers, and it's not CRTs fault it's become necessary.

  36. Yes there are some sane helpful volockies, and I’m always nice to them, so they have no need to be demoralised. The little Hitler control freak types I am not nice to. Is there something wrong with that?

  41. The biggest mistake written is Thorne lock which makes many boaters shy away from doing the northern canals. When I took my 70 footer up there we were prepared and thought we would be going round Trent end but actualy went to Thorne and found we had very nearly a quarter of an inch clearance so depending on how long my steve Hudson seventy foot boat was is precisely how long a narrow beam you can get through Thorne lol.

  42. Summer days on the Canal de Bourgogne, maybe around 2003, seen here on the western side, some way above Tanlay. A great canal in parts, particularly on the higher stretches, as at Pouillenay, in Photo Two

  49. Good decision! But of course there is plenty of other volunteering to be done, it’s not just volockies. A near neighbour at our marina volunteers with CRT but they spend their time cutting back vegetation etc, and they do a jolly good job too. And they get a work boat to play with! As you know, my head is enormous and if some small part was damaged I probably wouldn’t miss it. And anyway, who’s to say that the windlass wouldn’t have come off worse?

  50. No need for inventing anything. There are many examples of hogging moorings I've come across. In some cases the boat hasn't budged in years. So who exactly is behaving like they're more important than anyone else? And please don't make this into some kind of rich/poor or class thing. It isn't, it's simply about being reasonable and trying to be equitable with a finite resource.
