  8. I would suggest it is more important to work with the cable length and thus volt drop created as well. If you do that the cable should never get hot enough to worry about the temperature rating for most boat wiring. It won't generate enough heat.

  9. The towpath at market drayton is in far from poor condition....I moored there last year..its ridiculous to suspend all the visitor moorings on one of the most popular stops on the shroppie during the busiest time of year. I suggest that people make their feelings known to CRT at the stupidity of this. I totally agree...they seem to be going out of their way to annoy boaters and create PR disasters....once again I find myself thinking that BW weren't that bad after all.....

  14. Its not really incompetence, its more like a well executed but misguided plan. They are totally obsessed by corporate branding and are just looking for any reason to put up more ugly blue signs. Up here they recently did a survey of the current signs and then replaced them with nasty new blue ones. One sign said nothing at all, I assume most of it had broken off in the past, so they replaced it with a blue sign that also said nothing at all. ..........Dave

  17. This towpath project is funded by Rural Payments Agency under EFRAD Rural Tourism Infrastructure. Works to be carried out include improving towpath surface and orientation signage. This isnt essential maintenance. Why oh why do CRT keep.shooting themselves in the foot doing stuff like this at peak boating season on possibly the busiest ever year on the canals. I've no doubt they will announce a 15 mile national angling competition soon somewhere busy as well.

  18. On the other hand, if they didn't do the required renovation work I expect everyone would be complaining about that. They can't really win. You can't always schedule works when it's most convenient for all users, sometimes things just need to be booked at inconvenient times.

  19. I do 90% of my boating solo. And yes, long straight stretches with no locks are boring - there's one on the Llangollen noted in my Nicholson's as "the long straight boring bit". Always seems to take an age... The same is true of the endless lines of boats at the bottom of the Shroppie, though at least you can look through their windows. Late Autumn is worst, gets dark early. Summer you can sit outside, read, admire the scenery. So I'm with the OP. Sometimes boating is boring. Luckily, mostly it isn't, which is why, having bought the boat in a fleeting moment of wealth at the age of 40, I'm looking forward to going off again in a couple of weeks with significantly less hair.

  20. Yesterday Common spotted orchid on the side of the Ashton canal central Manchester. There’s a fair few around this year. Please don’t try to dig them up, the bulb is very deep and rarely is it successful killing it in the process.

  22. This is rubbish I am based on the Ashton canal I was involved in it’s restoration and I am now the volunteer lock keeper on the canal. I speak to boaters all the time and a have not come across one who has suffered any form of vandalism. I have come across a number of people who have moored up overnight on the flight without problem. I have heard people calling the canal and the majority of these have never been on it themselves. come use the Manchester canals they and the people are great

  26. Mine is done in 70mm². You might find this a good compromise if length does not dictate otherwise. It's quite a bit easier to handle than 90mm².

  27. Moored up there in May, wet day but towpath was OK for boaters needs. Went into town and did our shopping because it is so convenient. As far as i am concerned, the work is not required for boaters so why inconvenience us so much at what are very good and extremely useful moorings.

  33. CRT know about it and obviously dont give a stuff as they have previously done this on the Shroppie and in Loughborough that I have experienced. I wouldnt normally go out when it's so busy anyway unless I could get off the beaten path. It's not me I'm thinking about, it's the people with a holiday deadline, or restaurant booked in advance that it's going to mess up. I have emailed a heads up to all the hire boat bases which send boats along this stretch so they can forward plan for late returns, disrupted training and possible problems mooring up for lunch for their customers, which I think is a far more helpful and productive use of my time

  34. It'll be to turn the towpath into another cycle racetrack. At the moment it's a perfectly pleasant traditional path.

  37. The inclined plane at Ronquieres in Belgium opened in 1968 when we, in Britain, were still facing canal closures. No further away from London as Liverpool, or Leeds, it remains strangely unknown on our island. Were it otherwise, and comparisons made with waterways on mainland Europe, such schemes as renewal of freight on the Aire & Calder would be taken a good deal more seriously - to the benefit of our network on the whole.

  42. I used to work 10hr solo night shifts and found simple things like the radio or audiobooks helped a fair bit in breaking up the monotony. That said, i grew up an only child to a single working mother so have always been comfortable in my own company. Do you have pets? companionship doesn’t have to be people.

  46. Quite simple, discuss with the Finance company and see what they require, it will probably be : 1) Pay the outstanding balance directly to the finance company. 2) Pay the remainder to the present 'owner'. If there is a mortgage on the boat then legally the finance company will be the owner and and paperwork, bill of sale etc should be signed and agreed by them. There will probably be a statement to this effect in the mortgage contract, something like "it cannot be sold without the permission of the finance company" Yes - it will be very easy to get yourself into a mess. If you were to pay 100% to the 'owner' and he didn't pay off the debt, the finanace company could come and take the boat off you and you lose everything. If the loan is a personal loan from the bank to the 'owner' then the boat is not taken as security and it can be sold. Do some research.
