  1. This ash tree has been lying beside Allen’s lock for years looking boring, so I decided to liven it up

  10. We live in Lincoln so I popped by and had a flying visit cuppa with her a fortnight ago before we set off on our travels. She was in good spirits and very happy to have found Kevin. I think no news is probably good news on the electrics front and hopefully she is enjoying her boating in this glorious weather.

  17. Assuming one agrees with your premise of what constitutes "the wrong reasons". I know that most people on a canal forum will agree with you, but I for one don't. People have a variety of reasons for wanting to live on boats. For some it's a passion for boats and the waterways, for others it might be purely financial. Many are between those two extremes. However, all those reasons are equally valid so I'm not going to judge which is right and which is wrong. The other thing worth noting is that some people might choose to live on a boat because they can't afford to buy or even rent a house or flat, but then develop a passion for boats and the waterways. Conversely, there are many boaters who love she waterways but who are perfectly happy in their houses and wouldn't dream of living on a boat. Nobody's reason for doing what they do is any better or worse than anyone else's.

  28. Will do. We are both* well thanks Ray, and happy to be back to a bit of proper boating this year after last summer being just a succession of weekly spells in the Braunston area. Not that I'm complaining, it was lovely and we felt privileged to have a boat and be able to do that between the lockdowns. Hope you are well and managing to go boating. * Actually there's 3 of us now. We discovered a stowaway earlier - the dratted duck had come back. We now need to catch up with Dr Bob and persuade the duck to go back.

  32. A bit of ignorance being displayed about data protection in the T's & C's, I think. Under the British Waterways Act 1971, CRT has a statutory duty to keep a register of craft available for public inspection. Seems to me that the T's & C's attempt to alter the law by allowing CRT to decide who can obtain this information.

  33. Well he had me fooled then. Admittedly that's not difficult but I have since returned him to his rightful owner and he too was taken in by the subterfuge. I can only assume this imposter, if that's what he is, is a superb con artist. Maybe it was a mistake letting him into my life, however briefly. I just hope he didn't glean enough personal information to be able to impersonate me online.

  35. A peniche loads at Coulanges, 29 locks up the hill from Auxerre on the Canal du Nivernais. The picture was taken forty-odd years ago and, even then the route was silted enough for the last few tonnes to be takan by lorry, then loaded aboard in Auxerre. The silo remains here and there used to be, in the shallows below this point, the vestiges of a barge repair yard, but no passer-by would ever know. Note the towering TV aerial, the first thing to be attended to whenever the vessel was moored.

  38. Walk down the flight to Caen Marina, their diesel is the cheapest on the K&A and they are very helpful. Borrow a container or two and fill them up. Walk to the first lock, Foxhangers and put your diesel on a passing boat in return for helping them with the locks. Get it delivered at Devizes some 5 hours later. Return containers to the marina.

  39. When you are on the move, there is the ever changing landscape going by. Weird stuff, weird people, weird animals, just general weirdness to see. Unlikely to be boring. Jen Plus you can stop off for ice cream.

  45. No, thats not spill proof. Take an outboard engine priming bulb, add a length of tube either side. Insert one end in the Jeremy and the othr end in the tank, pump the primer ball, fuel flows and syphons. Simples, no tilting of a heavy can, no gushing, no accidents.
