  3. Just a little thanks to the CRT people here. They could not have been more helpful to me, as a beginner. As have other boaters, a lady opened the next lock for me, as the levels were too low to get over and moor...I've met many helpful folk so far, thanks!

  4. If anyone was wondering what had become of the duck, worry no more. He (or is it she?) was spotted today on my boat. Yes, it really is that duck.

  15. I hate to say this but have you thought about changing to a cassette toilet? No need for motors, pumps, smelly hoses or other things that can go wrong.

  29. I would say its 1/2 bsp....just check if its internal or external thread. Most calorifiers are 1/2" bsp on the fresh water side....some are 3/4" on the coils

  31. If you are very close to clean bare metal then do it in epoxy, something like Jotamastic, but I would get a light colour version rather than black. If you don't want to go the epoxy way then Danboline. ..............Dave

  34. A rising bollard on the Canal du Centre in 2009. These lock just over 5m deep have 2 rising bollards and fill from the bottom very quickly. Passing commercials leave dates of passing and destination on them . Bit similar to narrow boatmen writing messages on bridges and lock sides .

  35. I know but it represents cheaper boating for the masses, like the original Model T Ford, as they say “you get what you pay for” also bespoke doesn’t always mean quality, it’s all down to the shell builder and who fits it out as you know. All these people that complain after they bought a new Collingwood weren’t complaining about the price when they bought them were they? maybe they should of thought what I wrote above “you get what you pay for”

  39. No brushes on a capacitor start/run AC only motor. If it runs OK sometimes and there is no sign of windings burnt, I doubt its the start windings. Without a start phase shift which is what the capacitor does it will be undecided which way to run. Black box in the back casing?

  43. I suspect the presence of detergent type additives that allow some emulsification. Automotive diesel fuel suppliers routinely dose the fuel with some proprietary additives to improve the cetane rating, lubricity, wax suppression, and some promoted, to keep injectors clean. I suspect that some of these may have some emulsifing properties. Then there are multitude of aftermarket additives, promoted to keep diesel bug at bay, and other benifits. These primarily seem to consist of emulsifiers to disperse the water, and perhaps biocide. The fact they could impede water separation and thus the operation of conventional fuel water separators is the basis of my dislike for such additives. I had much more trust in the fuel as supplied by major oil companies then fuel subsequently adulterated by customers. In spite of any additives added during distribution, saleable diesel fuel should be clear and bright. The definition used by one international oil company was that normal print of The Times newspaper was readable through a Johnnie Walker bottle full of fuel. They did not provide the testing apparatus however or specify as to whether this feat should be accomplished after first drowning the original contents of the said bottle!

  45. I absolutely agree. The interests of minorities shouldn't be trampled on. But I'm waiting to be told what these interests are, and the nature of the minorities. If it's just people who live on boats who basically want to be moored in one place without the expense of renting a mooring, then I'm not sure the whinging is justified. That's like folk in houses refusing to pay council tax because they don't like the council's politics. There is a strong argument for opening up cheap moorings for residential boats in town and cities, but this isn't what is being discussed. The new t&cs don't seem to have disadvantaged anyone on here yet.

  47. You will get a far, far better secondhand boat at under £100k, than you will paying £120k for new one, The other advantage of buying second hand is that you get it 'today' but buying a custom build you will find that all the reputable manufacturers will have a ~2 year waiting list (or you could by a Reliant and get it in 9 months) Will the mooring you have found still be there in 2 years time ?

  49. I don't think it is - the RY-131 and RY135s had no lift to the counter, and were basically transom sterned with (generally) a cut out for the rudder and the corners rounded off - that looks more like the back end of a conventional narrowboat to me.
