  1. SORTED problem identified. In the deepest recesses of the boat lurked two f****** batteries linked by hidden passages to my nice new agms. They boiled, they heated, they expelled hydrogen sulphide, and they were determined not to give in. My new batteries are on overnight charge, time will tell, are they dead or alive ? Thank you to those who kept the faith, and who contributed positively, you know who you are. Jo

  5. Another photo of one, the extra depth compared to a narrow boat would make sailing a bit safer. It was not until 1933 that the section of the canal into Brussels was finally widened to 300 tonne standard. Members of the boatman's family towed them where necessary.

  6. What about psychological harm? How will a post-traumatically-stressed goose return to being an normal member of its community? We already spend £125,000 each year on stress counselling for Manx shearwaters, another £50,000 for gannets. Why gamble with a bird's future simply for the sake of a moment of peace on your well deck?

  7. If I remember right, thermal decomposition of PVA takes place around 200 to 300C, which is a warmer wash than many clothes are comfortable with. Have used it in the past as a binder for pressed ceramic powder that then gets removed entirely as it is sintered at over 1,000C. There may be a UV, or biological degradation mechanism that decomposes the PVA. My cynical side says this: Soap powder companies have a naturally limited market that they are all trying to get a slice of. Ways of getting a bigger profit might be to use advertising to prime people to pick their pack out of the supermarket aisle, rather than someone else. Soap powder was one of the products on which modern advertising was developed. Related to this are efforts to persuade people that their clothes are filthier than they are and need washing more often. Another is to change the format, so powder to tablets to capsules to whatever, which gives a higher profit margin. I stick with powder in my twin tub and half the packet recommended quantity. The fact that people keep their distance from me is purely from coronavirus precautions and nothing else! ?

  8. As we all know, there are various types of Vloggers on the cut and many of them. Mainly due to the absolute crap on mainstream TV recently, I have watched most Vloggers and favour the ones who are apparently not on any form of money making or sales agenda. I find these are the most realistic and down to earth informative ones. Those with agendas, promotions and other crap such as Patreon are obviously making plenty of money out of the game, good luck to them, but I am not interested. My opinion only... I get bored easily and although I watched all of 'Cruising the Cut' I eventually had enough of his whining about any noise and traffic as well as the cheese sandwich agenda so i moved on. 'Minimal List' was good in the beginning until it degenerated into 20 minute videos of two people in front of the camera moaning about whatever they could, so that got binned. Some thing about making a dog vegetarian seems not right either. 'Floating our Boat' was all good until they pleaded poverty and also pushed the eco agenda a bit to far. Whilst pretending they could not afford things they were secretly having a brand new boat built. Anyone who allows his partner to dictate that he cannot have Marmite because the jar has a plastic lid doesnt deserve to be watched. 'Boating Beyond' was really interesting in the beginning as they portrayed a genuine younger couple new to narrow boats and learning as they went along. They had a crap boat but they loved and made the best of it. Unfortunately they soon went the way of all the rest on a secret money making agenda which seemed to involve pleading poverty whilst buying a nice new boat. It seems that they are somewhat disliked as they now try to hide their whereabouts or movement plans, difficult to do on a well known canal system. Anyway i found it all false so in the bin they went. There are many similar to the above and anyone who continually tries to make me press 'like' and subscribe soon gets dismissed. I am currently following two favourites who I find genuine and very down to earth. There is no money making agenda, no paid advertising and nothing false about them. I like the fact that they show their mistakes and issues as well as everything else, no clever editing involved either. 'Narrowboat Will' and 'Boat Dog Traveller' are for me the most informative of them all. I also watch 'Taylors Aboard' when I need a good laugh but unfortunately they have become another Patreon driven team. Anyone who is so stupid as to take 4 months to just go back and forth trying to get off the Thames is worth a chortle. They need to be careful with the amount of information they disclose - Having been cruising for 5 months throughout lockdown and being proud of only paying 78p for tax free diesel as they burn it for propulsion up the GU etc etc. Each to his own as as i say only my opinion of vloggers but I do agree with the OP, those Boating Beyond folk are something else. I have personally met a number of the above vloggers and they all seem nice people, just that some change when it gets to 'earning' from talking to a camera.

  15. Many years ago I used to subscribe to Which magazine. They recommeded repeatedly halving the quantity of washing powder until the clothes were not clean and then going back one step. The fact that you can't easily do this with capsules or tablets isn't lost on the manufacturer.

  16. Yes, that in in hand, I won't be asking anyone other than Kevin Knight if I can help it. ? There were four batteries in the bow and four in the stern plus the starter, and the charging is through the starter battery (in layman's terms). Now we have two in the bow and three in the stern plus starter. There is a black box under the sink. I'm not going there, it's all too much........

  21. And in similar vein... Some years ago we were on holiday in the Dordogne and we kept seeing Morris Minors and Travellers. We pulled up into a village car park and there were two or three of them. So I commented to the driver of one of them that there seemed to be a lot about. "Oh yes", he said, "It's the annual Owner's Club outing. We are all staying on a campsite in the next village. The trouble is, the campsite owner thought Morris Minor owners would all be retired vicars and Miss Marples..." . At this point I realised all the male drivers and passengers I had seen had been bearded beer-bellied 30-40-50 somethings, and the women all seemed to be wearing hippy dress. Apparently they had drunk the campsite bar dry on the first night!

  27. I'd never heard of this reference before and I've been puzzling why boatmen should stop there instead of going to the pictures in the centre of Birmingham. But of course the cinemas in the city centre were quite a walk from Sampson Road or Camp Hill top. I've done a bit of googling and there was a cinema literally just across the road from the canal on Kingsbury Road- so possibly the closest to the boatmens' route anywhere in the area. It was called the Apollo and it opened in 1930 and closed in 1960, being demolished shortly afterwards. OS map and photos attached (all from the net). Boaters could have moored on the wharf, walked out of the wharf gates, crossed the road and they were there.

  34. The voltage saying 13v at the batteries doesnt mean that the voltage at the Webasto is 13. Especially at startup, the units draw a lot of power, and if your batteries are tired/sulphated or not properly charged, or the wires to the Webasto not thick enough, then the unit may think theres not enough power and shut down.

  42. When we sold ours a few years ago we had it on Facebook, apolloduck and here. 3 viewings, 1 from here and 2 from apolloduck. Had 2 offers, both from apolloduck and both around the asking price, 1 subject to survey and 1 without. Sold within a couple weeks with no hassle at all. Would advise anyone selling to consider apolloduck as main site for listing on. Didn't get any real time wasting enquires from there unlike Facebook! Most boats including most brokers seem to get listed on there, Facebook seems to be full of chancers!
