  14. No it's not. They are well proven sources of water ingress. I think its change the sealing O ring once a year and keep it dressed with silicon grease or Vaseline. I would never have one from choice on a boat. Although more difficult t source we only used raised fillers on the hire fleet. Water can't run uphill but loves to run downhill.

  17. The price is generally a priority of consumers as they're the ones who pay... In this case it seems to be a fundamental bit of information that is being withheld. I'm always wary of anyone advertising anything who won't tell you how much it costs - either on their website or in direct communication.

  21. The River Oise forms part of a chain of waterways linking Belgium with the Seine, and traffic on it is steady. The pusher pair of 38 metre barges will be carrying 600 tonnes, the same loading as on the Aire & Calder in England (had the A&C not fallen into such a state that, when it is open at all, only 350 tonne loads can be managed (Come on IWA. Do something!)) 6/700 tonnes is the limit of the C du Nord currently. A new waterway, the Seine-Nord Canal, is due to replace it. reducing the number of locks and raising the capacity to 4,500 tonnes at a time. The yacht will be heading, no doubt, for the Mediterranean, having passed, perhaps, through the Canal de St Quentin, rather than the Nord, which is difficult for smaller craft - there are surges within the locks, due to the way the sluices are arranged, and the handlers of ropes can be vulnerable.

  25. So despite the warning and negative review from Tracy at the beginning of the thread you tried to order from them anyway? How odd. I guess we're all different but if someone told me they only send one battery even if you order more that would be enough to put me off and I'd choose a different supplier. There are lots out there. But the service is sh*t if they make a habit of not sending the correct order the first time! I'm obviously a more demanding customer then you, but my job is complex and I'm busy and I really don't have time to waste on rectifying other people's mistakes, especially when their job is so simple and all they have to do is match the number of items to an order.

  29. Fully agree as long as they are diesel jump leads with hefty crock clips rather than the toy that look as if the have been made form wired HT lead one so often finds. Unlike jumping from vehicle to vehicle were yo ca run the donor vehicle for a while one can not risk much volt drop through the leads and clips.

  30. Ask any Birmingham City supporter about the gypsy curse on St. Andrews (Trillion Trophy Stadium now). When Barry Fry was manager, he employed a gypsy to lift it, but if he succeeded there, it was soon undone by a succession of very dubious billionaire Hong Kong hairdressers and various other racist stereotyped oriental owners.

  36. But as a newbie you don't know what is good design and what is bad design, once you've bought it you are are pretty much stuck with it until you decide / can afford to upgrade. If more people asked for advice before buying then the pitfalls could be explained to them. Buying it and then asking 'what can I do about xyz' is a bit horse / stable door.

  37. This is us. The shell was built by Reeves in Napton in ‘06. They worked to our own design and did a nice job. She’s a bit unusual - twin prop electric propulsion, mainly because I like playing with that kind of thing. Andy

  38. There's a brainful for the day after a bank holiday! Segments and garter spring should be within the solenoid plunger, is that what you call the drive tube? very descriptive. Very early models don't have them, CA45 A and B from memory, might be wrong. They should be immediately forward of the larger diameter bore in the plunger. If you have energised the solenoid without the pinion in situ, then if those segments were there they will most likely have jumped out. You mention solenoid terminal screw in the singular, I presume then a 12V earth return unit? Yes it has to come out, disengage the internal insulator from the casing and it will lift up enough to clear. With that out a stout clout of the casing onto a block of wood (nose up) will shock the assembly out. My first thought on the actual problem is, the spring - ball - top hat - end cap assembly on the comm end, not gone AWOL has it? It sometimes does. Parts: cargo Wood auto pm me before you buy anything, I get a massive discount.

  39. External steps into the cabin are the work of the devil! Once crewing a boat with them I stepped from the landing straight down the 'ole. Didn't break anything but it hurt! Made worse by the fact we had just come out of the pub after a lunchtime pint and there were lots of people around in the beer garden.I felt a right arse!

  40. Do it the surveyor way, a hammer on the outside will find the ribs and bulkheads. No need to do any damage, a good solid bang with a clean mallet will do.

  42. Well it's been a while and thought would do an update will add photos later but after towys engine being 3/4 finished was just water and oil lines left, I ended up with a boot full (Car was on its arse wouldn't have got down back roads) On this it ment I decided to fully remove the engine. Her engine has now had the following done. 1 x Brand new cylinder head fully built up. X2 good cylinder heads fully stripped and rebuild using all new parts (while was at it decided to rebuild a spare has had enough new bits) Brand new national tower with new liners, new pistons with rings new national rods and bearings (original type that need the big end bolting and shimming to the rods) Very low used water pump housing with new internals (one side was new never used one side had very little use but had a new one made using new old parts as copies) New water pump pistons, rods, shafts, seals, electrics, gear housing has had all new bearings, has been converted to a sealed unit as 1 of the things I found looking at the gear housings I have is they very quickly and easily block on the oil feeds and there is a very poor design on the input as it has to run round the outside of the shaft bearing to get to the rest of the pump this blocks up and no oil get to the water pump gear housing. This problem has been removed and will run on gear oil. Only part old is the bilge pump engaging ring. Fully rebuild govenor using 3/4 new parts, all other parts have been replaced or fully stripped remachined refurbished and extra bearings added to remove wear & future wear and ease of repair in future, only the casing & the speed control arm (to the speed control leverback cabin) have not been replaced or repaired but new bearings have been fitted in housing. Fully refurbished drive shaft for water pump - governor. Refurbished cam shafts, 1 has new lobs fitted other has had new lobes in past so these were cleaned up. New bearing in camshaft holder (timing chain end) fly wheel camshaft holders have been replaced with new parts and a manual oil feed added as the originals have now oil feeds the just work on oil falling down and praying it lands on the very small very shallow cup to lube, this has been made into a big cup but as said manual oil feed added so can be filled with oil, has had the end caps removed and a 1/4 bsp bit added with a inner washer to remove bearing in future if required. Oil pump been fully refurbished with new shafts and bearing, the bearings have been replaced with oilite bearings as the stock again just works on a small grove and oil off the timing chain splashing oil at it, it has also had the oil feed from the water pump relocated to the oil pump shaft and a drain hole added so it gets an oil feed another fault that's common as the original has effectively no oil getting to the bearings. So far all other bearings have been replaced and all other oil lines and feeds have been replaced. 1/2 the engine is now ready to have gaskets made and then ready for test fits to check end float on all shafts and shims and new thrust rollers can be ordered. Once this is done will be onto new white metal bearings (12kg of lms loco white metal is ready to make new bearings from) Then it's onto gearbox full rebuild (has already had new reduction gears and bearings replaced) will have all gears and bearings replaced and both drive cones and housings be recut to match to remove and lips or scoring.

  44. Goo stiddy, keep gooing. You cannot rush the backblocks of the BCN. A draft of about 2ft 6 is fairly easy, anything larger is doable, but more difficult. On that basis: The Tame Valley is OK, you won't get stuck, you might get a bladeful (or more). The Walsall is deep enough, just. You WILL get a bladeful, at least once. The Wyrley is fine, but slow. You will probably get several bladeful, but getting stemmed up means you are off piste, a lot. The BCN is great. Do not miss any of it. N

  45. We looked up the beginning of the Engine arm many years ago and it didn't look very inviting - last week I had a YT binge and saw how much that has improved and ditto for the Titford pools - so I'm encouraged. Now, I have to convert The Management... It's so much easier to keep straight on at Fazeley Junction - but that's boring. Perhaps if we forsake the Thames and it's extreme costs and keep the boat further up the Oxford canal, we may go back to boating around the Midlands. Thank you.

  46. In terms of prop fouling I would say the W&E has got a lot better over the last 10 years, but there is still a lot of unsightly floating debris, which is a real shame. The Walsall improved after it was dredged about 8 years(?) ago, but does seem to have gone downhill since then, which is disappointing. Whilst the BCN Challrnge is about making good progress, I back off or even go into neutral going through bridge holes, as that is where you mostly pick stuff up. I think I only cleared the prop 5 or 6 times on last year challenge, not bad for what in normal terms could be considered a weeks boating.

  47. That’s not my experience. It’s not so great around Birchills Junction and the canal goes through a rough estate to the east of the junction but it’s generally well fenced between the gardens and the canal. Never had any trouble in a number of trips along the entire length in recent years. Last year @Rob-M , myself and a couple of others cruised the entire length plus the branches before and during the BCN Challenge and throughout the journey there were people coming out to watch us pass. OK we were on board the CRT Heritage boats and they would have heard us coming but it was joy to cruise the canal despite also getting a complete tennis net around the blades that ultimately required one of crew to don his wetsuit and get in the canal. Most people seem to enjoy having the canal pass their home but it does pass through some pretty deprived places and it shows in places but mostly it’s not like that at all. Pelsall Common and the Cannock Extension are an excellent canal location. JP
