  1. It is very sad that this chap lost his life and I think it shows up the forum in a bad light that the thread has degenerated into a discussion on his status and pension income . The guy has lost his life let's show some respect Haggis

  9. That was us! We had spent the morning mopping out the back cabin bilge (after the automatic bilge pump had failed to drain the stern gland compartment) and drying out all the stuff that we usually store in the bilges. Then, when were ready to leave for the last six or seven miles to Glascote, the start batteries died completely and didn't even have enough electrickery to engage the starter solenoid. After a failed attempt to re-charge them with the generator, I transferred two batteries from the domestic set of four and we got underway at about six pm. We arrived at Glascote in time to watch the final episode of "Line of Duty" - our remaining domestic batteries proved quite sufficient for that . . . Apologies to anyone we disturbed by cruising at such a late hour - however, for us, the experience was very pleasant. The Coventry Canal beyond Nuneaton is as good as it gets in terms of canal cruising. "chufity chufity" is an apt description of the sound that our boat makes - one can sing "Teddy Bears Picnic" to the rhythm at the speed normally selected for passing moored boats whereas open canal cruising speed is a bit more "Nellie the Elephant". Those who have crewed with us will know these songs well!

  13. After 30 years as a Police officer he would have a decent pension, so more then likely doing it voluntary just to get out the house and keep active and not for the money as HMRC quickly take it off you when you make extra. I don’t know why people are going on about PAYE or Employee, does it make any difference to the senseless murder of a decant man?

  20. 4 litres is very low have you measured with the showerhead off, if lot more get a new one. possible also the mixer is restricting it to that low number. The bends won't help I repaced with flexitap hose but they shouldn't reduce flow from thhe theoretical 11 (actual will be over 9) to 4

  24. Perhaps they've been paying attention to HMG, duplicity is the order of the day.

  25. Presumably the folk at DEFRA are bright enough to spot any relevant discrepancies and ask for explanations. I assume (without being interested enough to go into any detail) that CRT have tried to include only what would maximise the chance of getting a bigger grant. If anyone expects any business these days to behave otherwise, they've not been paying attention to the economy over the past n years.

  29. I would suggest trying shorting out +be to the solenoid terminal instead of turning the flywheel. All pre engaged starters are designed with a spring somewhere between the solenoid and drive assembly, if the pinion hits the flywheel tooth to tooth the solenoid should compress the spring to complete its travel and the pinion will snap into mesh when the starter begins to turn as the contacts close. It sounds like the solenoid lacks the power to compress the spring and I would suspect volt drop.

  30. I too was interested to see the steerer being counted into the locks. We do this on the Luciole, as in the picture, because we have to. Whereas, on the Secunda, 5 metres in beam, I could get her into locks without assistance (despite the massive rudder, stiff steering and a tendency to slip sideways) with the Luciole it is very difficult indeed. She displaces 170 tons and, like many French peniches, is built of thinner metal than narrow boats are, There is only an inch to spare on each side, and If we nudge the entrance we really know about it. I have got her into locks without guidance, but with the superstructure blocking the view it isn't easy. When there is a wind catching the saloon and the current of the river is coming in at angle, having someone counting is a blessing. One other aspect of the Traveler movie was the guy's facility with ropes. Many of us can lasso a bollard - most of the time. But I try not to depend upon it, in fact I lecture our crew to (a) take the boat in slowly, while (b) whoever is tending the bow line walks ashore to put the noose in place. Should there be a cock-up then (c) the steerer should have the time and space to stop the boat on the engine if needs be. Ninety-nine per cent of the time it all works fine, but our season is long enough, and we've had 44 of them now, so those one per cent occasions do mount up!

  31. Here we gooooo Today at last engines are out I had to widen the gantry first to got it around the boat as it was about 50mm to narrow. but doing this also made it higher, so now able to move the gantry over the boat instead of around which would of been a pain in the arse. .To make it easy to do i used U bolts to hold one end and then welded the other end then slid the U bolted end to the end of the new too RHS beam. then plated the sides to beef it up more and welded in two lengths of 50x6mm bar to make the trolley track It didnt take to long to get them out but if we first had the correct angle on the first engine it would of been quicker.I am still shocked that they are held in place with just six M8 bolts around and no engine mounts but just through the transom. This is a mate that gave me a hand as still struggling so that was very much appreciated I have made a couple of engine stands aswell for them. I started to strip down the dodgy engine so i could sort eh stand mounting hole pattern, and found this in the drive plates. Think i need to replace these Ill finish tomorrow the stands and then get stripping this one down.Hey i have a mooring incentive now BIG TIME

  34. Any decent yard should be able to re- skin the boat in steel, providing a permanent solution to the problems you are encountering. I’ve no knowledge of yards on the K and A, here in the midlands then Norton Canes Boatbuilders at Glascote may be able to help, or Canal Transport Services at Norton Canes. Both have extensive, real experience of the re skin process.

  47. I truly hope it doesn’t close. I love everything about it. Apparently some people don’t share my views and I just can’t understand why. It’s the most perfect pub…it may hark back to simpler times but that’s no bad thing I reckon.

  48. A visiting engineer got a pretty good result using an app on an Android phone called GString. It listens to the bangs made by the exhaust and works out what musical note you are playing. So for example normal cruising speed gave a frequency of 50 Hertz, that is 3,000 bangs a minute (50 x 60), which is 1500 rpm (four stroke 4 cylinder engine, so each cylinder goes bang every two revolutions). RPM = frequency x 60 x 2 / (no of cylinders)
