  1. After 30 years as a Police officer he would have a decent pension, so more then likely doing it voluntary just to get out the house and keep active and not for the money as HMRC quickly take it off you when you make extra. I don’t know why people are going on about PAYE or Employee, does it make any difference to the senseless murder of a decant man?

  2. It is very sad that this chap lost his life and I think it shows up the forum in a bad light that the thread has degenerated into a discussion on his status and pension income . The guy has lost his life let's show some respect Haggis

  8. Peniches prepare to pass one another on the Canal de l'Est in France. In those days. prior to the widespread use of radio, steerers would use binoculars and hand signals to decide who should give way, and where might be the best place for passing. On the more rural canals it sometimes took, and maybe still does, several attempts at squeezing by, with one vessel retreating until a suitable spot was found.

  9. Had my attention drawn to this from Thunderboat forum. Quote. Dear Canal & River Trust I am writing to complain that the latest Trustee Annual Report (TAR) filed with The Charity Commission on 22 December 2020 and currently posted on your website differs from that approved by your board on 24 September 2020. The approved TAR was previously posted on your website and filed at Companies House on 12 October 2020. Publication Data relating to heritage (as required under the Defra Grant Agreement) has been altered to hide a substantial drop in condition from previous years. Bearing in mind - the communication between your Chair and the Secretary of State relating to this matter. the notes of the Grant Review meeting on 9 December 2020 attended by your Chief Executive and three other executives (including the executive tasked by the board for filing the TAR with Companies House and the Charity Commission). the replacement on your website of of the board approved TAR with an unapproved TAR. the absence of board notification or approval. - your actions can only be seen as a wilful and intentional act to provide the public and Defra with misleading and inaccurate information. Due to the current Defra Review into your performance, your actions put not only current but also future funding of the waterways into jeopardy due to a section 11.1.5 breach of the Grant Agreement. Equally, if not more important, is the reputational damage that you do to yourselves and charities in general by this action. By altering your TAR, you wish to convince that you are maintaining public benefit against your charitable object 2.2. However, according to the National Association of Boat Owners, you have refused to provide details of listed buildings you have sold over the last eight years. As you are aware, your current attempt to sell the Grade II listed Braunston Stop House has not gone unnoticed! What possible public benefit is derived from selling off buildings you should be protecting and conserving? Retrospectively changing information about how you are providing public benefit leads to public loss of confidence. If a charity does that, how can the public have confidence that any information contained in a TAR ot otherwise provided is accurate? Within the next five working days please provide the following - Details of any other changes made to your board approved TAR. Details of how you intent to investigate this complaint bearing in mind the seniority of those involved in altering the TAR. Regards Allan Richards From CRT’s charitable objects as recorded on the Information Commissioners Website - 2.2 TO PROTECT AND CONSERVE FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT SITES, OBJECTS AND BUILDINGS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL, ARCHITECTURAL, ENGINEERING OR HISTORIC INTEREST ON, IN THE VICINITY OF, OR OTHERWISE ASSOCIATED WITH INLAND WATERWAYS

  23. It takes all sorts, I suppose though, generally, there is enough common sense for one or other to wait at a possible passing place. Re Dutch families there is amongst the 38 metre fraternity a group of adventurous souls who take cargoes from the Netherlands deep into France for the hell of it (and running the risk of not getting a return load) For an excellent 24 minute movie of such a journey I highly recommend

  24. A chance for more pedantry! In the Glossary of Terms, the BSS requirements define "Accessible for inspection" as "Made available for inspection and capable of being seen and reached." No mention of being able to tighten, or replace. Reached precludes a mirror, or small spy hole.

  27. On the other hand I've seen two loaded boats jammed solidly side by side in the narrows on the Briare side of the aqueduct for best part of an hour, simply because the one travelling north couldn't be bothered to wait a couple of minutes to allow the one coming south to clear first. I recognised the name of the Dunkerque registered north-bound boat and he certainly should have known that although the canal was theoretically wide enough it was too shallow for two chargés to pass there; the other one was a young Dutch couple and I did wonder if it was some sort of rather self-defeating bullying tactic. ?‍♂️ Tam

  28. I am suspicious about the electricity charge. I thought it was illegal to charge more moorers more per unit than the price charged by the electricity company but charging an extra for providing the infrastructure is allowed. Also is electricity not charged sat 5% VAT. So I think that unless you are paying for units on top of the quoted price I think the bill should reflect two VAT rates and so on. I think you may do better to enquire at Calcutt, they may even have a free online mooring just one lock down from Wigrams.

  32. Looking at that now with a few more photos I will withdraw what I said earlier. I dont think it is a Racor filter. Also the quality does not look that good. I think I would go along with previous posters and remove and fit something more suitable with readily available parts. Call me cynical but Vetus do seem to sell various things that you cant cross reference, just to remove as much money as possible from the customer.

  38. Yes, but Drax imports about 7 million tons of wood chips from the US every year. Burning the wood now releases CO2 now, but new forests will take upto 100 years to recapture the Carbon, so initially there is a net increase in CO2. Sadly forests are not always replanted with trees and given over to crops. A British government study in 2014 concluded that a worst-case scenario, in which the logged forest land is turned over to agriculture, could result in total CO2 emissions twice as great as from burning coal. So if done with care, wood is good, but if done commercially, profit is the driver and not the environment. In reality wood burning is never going to be carbon neutral.

  39. Yes - but there are only a few narrowboats at Farndon . There are not many spaces that can take a full size narrowboat. I believe the prices include VAT. Farndon is mostly occupied by long term moorers. Visiting charges are usually higher than long term at most if not all marinas .

  40. Remove the mounting bolts on the alternator whilst you fit the belt, having grown a third hand first. Once its is over the pulleys you will find that it fits, in use it will stretch a bit then next time it will be easier! If it is too easy to fit you will soon run out of adjustment, there is precious little range of adjustment on some alternator mountings.

  41. There must not be a joint in the gas pipe anywhere that is inaccessible. Compression fittings only on gas. Copper olives only. Replace water pipe with plastic pipe and fittings.

  44. If you are bringing the surface forward I would run another batten along there to clip the pipe to unless the skin is going to be OK to fix to, drill another hole through the bulkhead so the pipe will come through at surface level. The gas fitter wont use a blowlamp and you should have the minimum number of fittings so probably wont want to join the pipe but run in one piece end to end. The water pipe could also be run in one length of Hep2 O.

  46. Yes it just reminds us that it's just not worth arguing with people you don't know. We've no idea what happened in this case of course and the attack may have been completely unprovoked. But as a general rule avoid confrontation. It's better to just walk away even if you're right and even if that means losing face. Stay safe.
