  7. The type of toilet I have heard referred to as an "Elsan" was basically a dustbin with a wooden seat on it. Cassettes are relatively high tech.

  10. Give your existing two pack a key with a medium grit paper, something like 240 grit. Then dust and wipe it over and you're ready for more epoxy. Before painting I normally spirit wipe with a clean rag and some of the thinners recommended for the two pack just to make sure it's clean, but as long as you've got the dust off you should be ok without doing that. Make sure you mix part A of your two pack before mixing it with part B (curing agent/hardener). Usually you mix part A & B by volume as detailed in the technical data sheet and mix it thoroughly. If you need to thin it use no more than 10% of the thinners specified in the TDS and do that after mixing parts A & B. Finally, make sure you read and follow the TDS on the minimum and maximum overcoating times.

  13. That is one that really is worth rooting for - putting those canals back into the network will really add a lot.

  27. You look to have very wide toilet paper - is that because you are a wide-arsed boat ?

  28. I wouldn't have any Apple device even if they were giving them away. All Apple stuff is junk. It just goes to show the power of Apple's hype that so many people think they are the bee's knees. To be honest I wouldn't buy an Apple device partly because they are stupidly expensive, becoming more and more impossible to repair which ties you into buying new, they are not compatible with the majority of the rest of the world, but also BECAUSE of Apple's hype. Having said that Samsung is rapidly going down the same road. WAAWEE and LG have, more or less gone which doesn't leave a lot of choice.

  29. On the subject of being injured by the tiller when going forwards. I have never considered it as a problem. In reverse yes, and I always stand forward of the tiller arc. The amount of rudder forward of the hinge line is very small so if something hits it the lever arm to deflect the rudder is very small compared to the lever arm of the tiller. Also anything hitting the rudder has to get through or round the prop first so I don't think anything very big could hit it. (I have had a log stop the prop though). I can't find a photo of my rudder at the moment. Am I being stupid to be in the tiller arc going forward? (8years of ownership and a number of years of hiring beforethat).

  31. We had our first home-grown new potatoes tonight. I grow some in pots started in January. Even the dog contributes, as they start in the living room on top of her cage before being moved into the porch as the shoots appear. Just as a separate course with butter and salt and the first shoots of the mint. Food doesn't get much better than this.

  32. She's 33ft, I'm 5ft 8 Currently I'm wondering how things would go if I had a pole with a wheel on the end and just pushed upwards as I go through anything that looks low and scary! Thank you Dave that is really useful. Any idea how I can find out the heights of individual bridges other than going there though?

  37. Sorry, the existing coating is excellent after twenty years, apart from about 1 sq m covered in bitumen,. I am not going to spend £2K, on grit lasting.

  40. DO NOT buy a Dometic. They are bloody crap. Build is terrible and every cassette leaks. I fitted a brand new one and bought spare cassettes cost me a fortune and I skipped the lot in as new condition after a month or two and put the vastly superior Thetford back in.

  41. Its funny I was at the garage the other day doing some electrics on a car when Lucy from the tile shop came across to borrow a charger for her apple phone, we were her last chance 18 businesses and no one had an apple phone including us! Her comment was priceless "whats wrong with you lot why dont you have proper phones?" We were all waving our android phones at her, I would not dream of downgrading to apple

  42. And people complain about some of the northern canals.... During my travels in Burnley and Blackburn I recall seeing a dumped bog amongst the copious detritus discarded by the locals but never an elsan/leesan/thetford/etc. As well as being soft Jessie's looks like you southerners are dirty beggars as well.... Seriously I applaud Maffi and anyone who tries to improve their environment and I've spent several Sundays with other volunteers pulling rubbish out of the cut Can't compete on the number of bogs but fire extinguishers and patio chairs seemed to be my usual 'treasure' on the L&L in Burnley ??

  48. I'm planning on sitting on it for at least part of the normal 10-12 hour cruising days I'll be doing! Standing/resting on the narrow stern rail after a while will be a bit uncomfortable.

  49. @canalbuff: You are right about that hole where my boat was moored; the sides were too sloping and it was incredibly muddy. Do you remember that old guy who lived on his narrowboat at Redhill while we were there? He had a proper working boat, but it was used for school trips, so he told me. He told me he was married and had a wife in Loughborough, but he found living in a house unbearably hot after a lifetime on the canals. He happily wandered around in sub-zero temperatures with just a scruffy, open-necked shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Must have been in his late 70s by then. What was the marina owner called? Richard something? I wonder if he's still alive. I remember him getting married during my time there. He also seemed to have remarkably little respect for the rulings of the local council, building that access road against their wishes, if I recall correctly, and various other activities. And I also wonder if Roger Barrington is still alive. It would be great to find him and get his story.

  50. You took out a whole year's contract. If you did not say to the marina that you intended to stay on, after the yearly term was up, your contract already had an end date, which was written into the yearly contract. The marina is asking you to renew a contract. You shouldn't have to renew it. I would seek advice from a Citizens Advice Bureau. Your end date and notice should be implicit in the contract you had previously taken out. You had already given a 12 month's notice. In my view. Your term of contract ended on the due date; beyond which, you haven't agreed to enter into another, or be obliged to follow the marina's Terms and Conditions.
