  2. A little late but we have made it so that users with less than 10 posts can't send PMs at least for now. Can't be having this as not only is it unwanted from a user perspective, it also has implications on the site as a whole. Appreciate the mods have done a great job keeping on top of this as always. Just as a FYI though - if enough people report a spammer, the forum system will take corrective action automatically, in most cases. Obviously we can't give full details as to how this works exactly but please bear this in mind. That said, the risk of this attack happening again in this particular form is now reduced. Apologies for any inconvenience caused by this

  16. You took out a whole year's contract. If you did not say to the marina that you intended to stay on, after the yearly term was up, your contract already had an end date, which was written into the yearly contract. The marina is asking you to renew a contract. You shouldn't have to renew it. I would seek advice from a Citizens Advice Bureau. Your end date and notice should be implicit in the contract you had previously taken out. You had already given a 12 month's notice. In my view. Your term of contract ended on the due date; beyond which, you haven't agreed to enter into another, or be obliged to follow the marina's Terms and Conditions.

  17. Funny you should say that, I was out last week on a newly painted boat testing the newly fitted throttle handle for reported slip and rudder for wobble. I took it to the local winding hole past all the fossilised boats near the waterpoint at tick over. Once past, and when turning, was testing the customer comments. I came back through the bridge, throttling up and down in forward and reverse, seeing when it slipped. By the time I got near the first moored boat I was back in tickover and saw him burst out of his front doors...( he had heard the noise and felt the waves)..."oy you, you arsehole, slow down", I was virtually stationary, the last test having been in reverse...slipping to tickover. I duly noted that he may find it better to leave his centre line on his roof rather than moor with 3 lines, more abuse so I tickovered on.

  25. Today in 2016 we had a car ride out to look for the source of the R. Seine and it turns out to be from this grotto in the Burgundy hills. The Siren looks rather the worst for wear. It’s quite a tourist attraction and the land around it is owned by the City of Paris.

  26. That kind of explains any confusion. You had to consider the insulation temperature rating for particular applications so the cart was as plain as day to you. I associate cable temperature with volt drop so the apparent discrepancy was what stood out and to be honest until this morning I did not notice the bit in the header bar about insulation temperature. Too bust trying to figure out what the table was on about to read all the text.

  33. Maybe so for the form of construction, but not for the concept. We inherited our first one from born-and-bred boatman Fred Dell. It is 3 squares of ply joined together with hooks & eyes for a 3-sided box, with a 4th panel as a roof. The front panel has a 'letterbox' slot to look through. The snag with that was the dogs used to lie on the roof, and on occasion they came over to peer through the slot, making vision somewhat difficult. Tam. (they're not often seen as photographers are not around in bad weather. ?)

  35. Many years ago a very good friend of mine was single handing up the Northampton arm, exiting the top gate she dropped the boat into reverse and proceded to step off to close the gate. Her jacket caught on a bolt on the rear cabin doors and into the canal she tumbled, luckily she is a small person and managed to get into the gate recess and watched the boat go past inches away from her. If she had been any bigger she would not have lived to tell the tale. Stangely after that the bolts were removed from the rear doors and she stopped leaving the boat in reverse when exiting a lock.

  36. A very lucky escape! People have suffered much worse injuries and have died from contact with a rotating propeller. If someone falls in near a boat ALWAYS ALWAYS immediately put the engine in neutral and then kill it. Trying to manoeuvre away from the person in the water under power is just too risky, as this incident demonstrates. Of course its difficult when you are trying to avoid the person getting crushed as well, but there is usually more time to try and prevent that, using human muscle alone. The key lesson though must be not to make those split second leaps. If the boat needed to go forward and back again to pick her up, it's just one of those things, as is bumping the boat moored beyond the lock. 28 years ago, I made a flying leap from lockside to boat and ended up breaking one ankle and seriously bruising the other (4 days into a 3 week hire boat trip) so I understand how accidents like this can happen. Anyway, best wishes to Marianne for her recovery, and thanks to both for being so honest about the mistakes they made.

  38. We obviously think alike. Did you also throw a Pooh stick into the water and wonder how long it would take to get to Paris? Tam

  41. It sounds like @johnmck has what might be termed a 'rolling contract'. It states an initial period, does not state a definite end date, and does include a notice period. This type of contract is often used where the service provided may well extend beyond the initial contract period, and removes any need to renew the contract at the end of the initial period. Often used by mobile phone companies.

  44. Why not keep it simple with 4 foot of clear plastic pipe and a bit of water. You are only looking for a change, ie. the pressure falling, not an accurate measurement

  49. Thanks to all the efforts by our mods to address this issue. I am one of those who has rarely posted - came here a while ago when I was looking for information about Blake's Lock (when I got some useful information thanks) but not posted since. So when I got an email from canal world I had forgotten totally that the forum existed and had to visit here to work out it was a spam as the PM told me nothing. My hunch that it was a spam was right, and I don't need any d***ed bit coins! By the way my email address (but not the username or password) is actually used on a different forum that was hacked recently. But I doubt many members of that one would be lurkers here so probably just a coincidence. Not a boater, just a casual member of the public. But very genuine hi....
