  6. Surely it was far more detailed than necessary, a simple 'NO' would have fully conveyed the situation, without the need for all the 'fluffy stuff' that served no purpose.

  7. I would argue the point "nasty vermin" They are just predators that occasionally conflict with human needs that all, their behaviour is just a result of evolution, they can't be nasty that's a human behaviour because we have the ability to make value judgements a fox just is. A hen coup is a totally artificial environment in the wild the birds would escape and fly away, so a foxes hunting behaviour is predicated on that, unfortunately we lock the birds in a small space, so when a fox is inside it's reacting to extreme stimuli

  26. From April 2016. The gates of lock 2 of the Tinsley flight were replaced. There are boats moored both top and bottom side of this lock, so some musical boats was needed to keep everyone afloat. Why are all the boats gone from the upper pound? This is why! All the things people have accidentally dropped in the cut are revealed. The crane for lifting old gates out and new ones in. While this was going on, all the boats were huddled in the lower pound. When the bottom pound was drained to replace the bottom set of gates, everyone crammed in to the upper pound.

  31. True. We would rather, because we are fortunate enough to be able to, pay for the year all in one. I visited a pet shop that sold birds. The ones on the lower level were going cheap. The African Parrots were offered on a credit system. I asked why, the owner said they are on Higher Perches!

  44. Save your money, just vac out the bottom of the tank where the water and muck will be. Use a length of copper tube in the end of the vac hose to get into the lowest corner.

  45. In a mains gas installation and a land LPG situation that is exactly how it is done, no other way is acceptable. I hate bubble testers. I don't trust anything that relies on a teaspoon full of antifreeze, introduces at least 2 more potential leak points, is subject to damage easily and induces the unskilled to think that everything is hunky dory. They were only introduced because the examiners were not trained or skilled enough to use the test nipple, not being registered as Corgi or now Gas Safe, yet had to certify gas soundness tests.

  46. Thank you for that detail Alan. My mistake, using the expression "All other activities". In my mind I was referring to what the man on the Clapham omnibus would recognise as core activities for Waterways. - Boats. - Moorings - Access leases - Property Rent - Fishing versus the costs associated with this activity. - Cycling as above. Monies contributed by the likes of DEFRA are an entitlement (and a cheap one at that) As the inland waterways were constructed by acts of parliament it became the government's responsibility to arrange their long term future. Unlike similar structures, railways/roads/airfields/docks you can't just abandon canals and forget about them. Especially as so many of them used existing rivers and water courses which would quickly breach or fail endangering untold properties and life. That is why the authorities delegate the authority for this to the likes of Waterways and make people like DEFRA responsible for what the government is prepared to cough up. It would cost a lot more than £52m yearly to fill them all in and create alternative safe drainage and all that implies.
