  20. This is the one cut down near us, someone set a plant in the hollow centre. I have a sucker from the root of the one cut down in the village, whether it will be resistant who knows, I can but try. All the others succumb when they get about 20 foot tall.

  22. Surely we just need to build more canals to keep up with the expanding numbers of boats?

  24. Thanks @Paringa - for some reason the EA don't seem to have shared this information with me, despite the eight hundred quid I give them every year... I could have looked pretty stupid turning up at a water point, as I have done for the last thirty years, and finding no hose, or not being able to use the collapsible one I carry for emergencies. There are approximately 15,000 boats registered for use on the upper Thames, if each one now has to carry its own, special, 7m hose, that creates a requirement for an additional 105km of plastic hose (mostly to be used once or twice a year). In what way does that put "environment" in "Environment Agency", I wonder?

  26. It really isn't anything to worry about. Boating isn't rocket science. Just take it slow. If you're not sure, or worried, about locks, find somewhere to moor up near one and go and watch people come through, offer to help and ask for advice. Everyone was a beginner once, everyone has made mistakes, and we've all lived through them. The crucial bit is to take it slow, and don't let anyone rush you. Most of the rest is common sense and courtesy. Steering feels weird when you start as, unlike a car, you're not steering by moving the front of the boat, but by moving the back end. Bit like a dumper driver does. After a few hours it becomes automatic. If you do get stuck on mud, don't try to drive off forwards, stop as soon as you can and let the engine drag you backwards into the channel again. And if that doesn't work, wait for a boat to come past and get them to tow you off - we've all been there. If your prop doesn't seem to be pushing you along, pull in, turn the engine off and nip down the weed hatch - it'll just be a bit of weed round the prop and is easy enough (usually) to get off. Relax, take it easy, if you get a bit fraught, stop and have a cup of tea. And don't worry about asking for help or advice, we all need help at times and mostly the advice is good (just use your own judgement about it!).

  40. In theory yes, it probably could happen with repeated exposure. In practice, no. Especially if you rinse it off afterwards.

  41. That was exactly the proposal in the 1995 Act at the Bill stage. A handful of people objected at the Committee stage on the basis that there were some owners who cruised steadily around the system and who therefore had no need of a permanent base. BW Solicitor Jeremy Duffey was so terrified that the Bill might be lost and he cobbled together the idea of the 'continuous cruiser', more or less overnight. We told him that he was making a rod for his own back as he didn't come with any definition of what that might mean, but he said they'd sort that out later! The rest is history, as they say. Tam

  42. I belive we not dealing with a loony afterall, But a homeowner who had a tree with a 'Preservation Order' blocking their view. What better way to hide the unlawfull cutting down of a tree with an order on it. Than for it to be among many cut down. Not a new idea, but anyone who has either seen or read the Agatha Christie 'ABC Murders' in which a Murder is hiden among many as part of a serial killing.

  45. Her Honourable Ladyship must think everybody else hasn't got a clue about anything and believes that only her recipe (for disaster?) applies 'cos of her vast experience of 40 years sailing the briny ............. I have never met her but I have this cartoon picture in my mind of a Popeye/Harry Enfield type person wearing sea-boots and smoking a pipe and rushing about telling everyone she meets that "you don't want to do it like that - do it like this ............... " ............ just sayin'. PS : other suppliers than Screwfix are available.

  48. Why is the normal double check valve as fitted to many outside taps not sufficient ? seems complete overkill to me and as others have suggested quite easy to circumvent. Nanny state strikes again....
