  7. Ah, Derek if you are off down memory lane. During WW2 my dad was posted to Wick Airdrome where he subsequently met and married my mum. Fast forward to the mid late 1950’s. We’d go by train every alternate year to visit my grandmother. The first of many trains would leave Rugby Station at 8.00pm on a Friday usually hauled by a Princess Coronation. We’d finally arrive at Wick the following day at 5.00pm. The trains from Inverness to Wick were hauled by Black 5’s. All memories you mentioned above come flooding back. In 1998 the Scottish Rail Preservation Society arranged for a steam run from Inverness to Wick and Thurso return with an overnight stay at Wick. I got tickets for myself and children. At one point whilst leaning out of the carriage taking photo’s all the years drifted away and in my head I was a little boy again breathing in that smoke and steam along with the obligatory face full of smuts. Photo's approaching Helmsdale on the journey south. Ah happy days. (22) Nightmail (1936). - YouTube

  9. I disagree entirely with the first 8 words by Ex Brummie. I have never seen a UPVC boat door or window that looks anything but ugly. The size of the UPVC sections is too big in proportion to typical boat door/ window size. N

  11. As a break from sanding and revarnishing some woodwork in our house we had oysters and chips in our local waterside pub. Moored outside was an obviously just repainted one of our classic launches. Ngaio 38 ft designed and built by Arch Logan, a son of the designer and builder of Waitangi. And launched this day exactly 100 years ago. We were invited onboard to inspect and help dress the boat with bunting.

  17. We walked from Berkhamsted to Hemel Hempstead along the towpath today. Lower Kings Road Bridge in Berkhamsted is open again... and looking amazing!

  21. I think the most recent posts above are starting to unravel the complexity that some buyers are faced with. If it makes buyers more aware, then that's a good thing.

  25. For the sake of avoiding confusion, rather than being pedantic, for anybody reading this that is not experienced in the BSS and survey process, it is important to provide factual information. You should distinguish the role of the marine surveyor and a BSS examiner. Two different roles and two different remits. The scenario you are describing relates to a BSS examiner. If gas is involved, then you are referring to a BSS examiner that is also registered with the Gas Safe scheme. Some surveyors are also BSS examiners but it would be misleading for people think that commissioning a surveyor will include the work that you describe. The extent of the work performed by the surveyor will be described in their proposal/contract with the client before the survey starts.

  28. Diddly - dah, diddly - dum, the rising and falling of telephone lines as seen from a railway carriage en route to Southend Victoria. Holiday memories circa 1952. Doors slamming, whistle blowing, flag waving, smoke and steam drifting through trackside trees. Rush to the front to feel the engines heat and smell, blue and cream buses instead of red. Rossi's ice cream! Pier trains rythmically beating time over rail joints, the smell of the gas works when the wind blew the 'wrong' way. Not long ago.

  36. Correct. Seen you do it, as well as name calling certain other boaters when your dander is up and someone criticises you. Is it the drink or just your normal attitude?

  40. Just remember (again from the BSS) If it 'aint connected, or it aint working it 'aint checked and no certificate is issued (except a fail)" "An Examiner Cannot Issue A Certificate On An Incomplete Examination!" The critical point is that all relevant items must be capable of being checked effectively and accurately. If not, the examination will be considered to be incomplete and no certification made.

  41. I had a couple of steel doors made to measure at the local fabrication shop, cost less that £150 (can't remember the exact figure). I then cut (using jig saw) the window & vent holes. I then inserted two pieces (one each side) of faced block board in the same veneer as the rest of the boat. Glued & waxed the wood, fitted the windows (using toughened glass from a local supplier) & the vents. Total cost about £250. I only have a photograph of the lower half of the door from a picture I took about something else. All in all it was not difficult to do as a DIY project.

  45. It started in Coventry, probably at the original telephone exchange above the Post Office in Hertford Street, following the route of the Coventry Canal possibly going to Fazeley Junction where it may have branched off to Birmingham. Plans and dates are now particularly difficult to find, believe me I've tried. When The GPO / Post Office Telephones became British Telecom / BT the historical records which were thrown out was unbelievable. It wasn't just the bath water and the baby, the bath went as well. One advantage is that wayleaves would be easier to obtain from Canal Companies. Only one wayleave agreement per canal company as opposed to multiple, hence more expensive, from local / highway authorities. There were other routes between Coventry and Birmingham but if you diversify the routes and one gets damaged you still have the others. An example of overhead routes from a city telephone exchange, 1907, Avenue Exchange in London.

  50. Yes it's all about jiggling around with plumbing fittings and bits of hose and getting rid of the fittings you don't need. Lots of us have managed to fit sinks in our boats while achieving the 10" minimum skin fitting height - without installing chest level sinks!
