  4. Absolutely not the fault of the Fountains boys and girls working the mowers and strimmers. Probably not even the fault of their gaffer who sent them out. Probably the fault of CaRT signing a contract with Fountains that says the tow path is to be mowed N times a year, with no stipulation that this is to be during the growing season. Jen

  7. Bob was talking crap again! The problem I find is that wifey stands 1-2 meters in front of the trolley browsing the 101 boxes of eggs that all look the same, trying to decide which one to touch ......and then tentitively open ...then tentitively swap for another one .....and repeat.... with hubby standing 1-2 meters behind the trolley with eyes rolling looking at the ceiling therefore blocking about 3-4 meters of isle space for 5 minutes. If hubby does it on his own, he is in and out in 15 seconds. Hubby does get shouted at when he gets home as he has bought all the wrong stuff!

  10. Hello all. I thought I'd post an update six months on from my original message - it feels like a long time ago since I started this thread and I expect most people have forgotten what it is all about and my situation. I'm still in my mid-30s, single and no dependants, so no change there! But other things have changed a little since my last post. A long story short is that I sold my home in November. I'm due to exchange and complete by the end of this month. Having decided to shelve the liveaboard plan in the middle of last year for the reasons given, I instead planned to sell my home in order to buy another slightly larger home which needs doing up. After months of looking at properties online, and a few in person, I never really got excited or fired up at anything I saw or even the idea of it. To me, that's not a good sign when you're about to take out a larger mortgage and even more so when it's a home that's being bought; not exactly an insignificant purchase and not one which shouldn't generate much emotion or feeling, I don't reckon, at least. With everything that's going on in the world, who can say whether house prices will drop, flatline or continue to increase. So perhaps now isn't an ideal time to buy. I think we're at least twelve months away from anything that resembles what we'd call normality in the world. Over Christmas I was allowed a visit with my mum who's currently sectioned in a hospital due to complications with early onset of dementia, largely due to not eating and drinking, having been diagnosed at the age of 56. I've been reminded again that perhaps I shouldn't be hanging about and dithering over making a big decision. I'm due to get the results of the test taken to see whether I've inherited the genes which cause early onset, by the end of the month but that's another story. Lastly, I was fortunate enough to get a promotion at work which kicked in during December and all's well there. The idea of buying a larger boat to live on was and is something that's continued to nag at me. I've continued to weigh the pros and cons of selling up to liveaboard, financially and otherwise, doing sums and maths on what things might look like financially if I were to do it. I appreciate that not everything is about money and many of the pros and cons can't be measured by numbers and are intangible. But massive worry and fear of coming off the property ladder has been one of the biggest blockers to be doing it. I've even talked myself out of buying a larger boat on the basis a boat might be worth scrap value in ten years depending on what happens to diesel. The sale of the house means I'd have £60k to buy a boat. And enough set aside to cover a survey and some remedial work (assuming it's nothing too serious!). I'd also have zero personal debt, no mortgage, and own my car etc outright. Plus I'd be left with around £25k invested in stock and share funds / SIPP. This is absolutely not meant to be some sort of an attempt at boasting or a brag, but I'd be fortunate enough to be able to bank/invest £2-3k per month should I choose to liveaboard - I only mention this as it's helped justify to myself my decision. So, I've decided to go for it. I'm buying a boat. My plans are to liveboard. No half measures, no lodgers or pulling out of my home's sale and getting a cheap BTL property to let out. The idea is to do it for an absolute minimum of twelve months, taking in all the seasons, to get a full idea of what it's like. I've chosen not to retain a property deliberately, in so not allowing myself a 'get out' or the ability to 'nip home' etc perhaps at a time when it's cold or lonely or whatever, a soft option which probably undermine what it's all about. With what I'm very fortunate enough to bank, my thoughts are that if I were to choose to go back to dry land then I'd be no worse off even if house prices did rise, and I sold the boat twelve months from now. Don't get me wrong, that's not my aim and I certaintly won't be circling days on a calendar. If I'm still on it in ten years and diesel's dead I'm sure there'll be a feasible alternative by then in terms of ICE replacement even if it means putting my hand in my pocket. So that's that! Decision made! The only problem is that due to lockdown nothing's coming to market and even that which does I'm not allowed to view. So I'm sure there'll be a load of pent up demand again. The people who I've sold my house to have bought it as a buy to let, so I'm renting it back from them on a rolling monthly contract until I find a boat which has saved me having to move out. Thanks again for your good wishes and advice.

  11. You will all be pleased to now that even though its minus 4 here on the Oxford and completely white over with a solid frost completely covering the solid ground that Fountains are here this morning not only walking along with big lawn mowers but also strimming. We all know its best time to do it when its solid ice and not growing

  12. The idea is that people STAY AT HOME, shopping is an essential function, two people do not need to enter a supermarket to shop. That halves the risk, or if you want it in plain English, two people double the risk, it is unnecessary, ie one person is making a non essential journey. The number of shopping visits should be minimised, individually and nationally.

  15. Tesla (or rather Elon Musk) has everything in hand, they are leading, and will continue to lead, the push to get rid of ICE, once that is achieved they will back off. Their primary aim of leading EV takeup is not just to be the biggest but to stop the world burning fossil fuel, for the sake of the planet he can't be allowed to fail. IMO ?

  19. So the chaps turn up and ring into the office saying its frozen solid and the boss says go home and no pay. What would you do if you were the mower operative. Maybe Fountains are a better company and sends them home on pay, would you still expect C&RT to pay for the work that should have been done that day. I was once on a building site where the chippy was hanging doors that were the wrong size for the frames, I asked him why. He said he gets paid to hang doors, if he doesn't hang doors he doesn't get paid, its not his fault the company who pays him to hang them sent the wrong ones so why should he be the one who has no money to pay the bills. He didn't say how much they would pay to take them off again.

  34. I've been trying to remember the last time I went into a shop. I now buy all my groceries online. I reckon the last time I went in a shop to buy was around september/october last year. The one except was about 3 weeks ago. I was out for a walk and I was desperate for the loo, there was a tesco so I went in to use that. I was genuinely shocked at how busy it was. Yes it was in the run up to Christmas, but there were big family groups just ambling around the shop with their masks round their chins. This was in a tier 3 area. I think it was at that point that fully realised how bad things would be getting in the new year. Some people just never got what a pandemic means in the first place (including some forum members). Others seem to have gotten bored with doing what they should. It should be really simple. If you're planning to do a thing, ask yourself these questions: 1. Is there any level of risk involved? 2. Do I actually need to do it? 3. If yes, can I do it differently to reduce risk. A pandemic is built in billions of little casual neglectful acts. Each one adds a tiny bit to the overall picture. Shopping in pairs or groups is one of these acts. If you really can't do it by yourself, it's not available to order online, and you really NEED it, then fair enough. But if you tick those boxes I'd question whether you should even be going out, or whether someone should be shopping for you.

  35. Thanks Tony! That was another top suggestion. All changed now and indeed the new part is working, the heater is no longer cutting off as the flame coming out of the injector assembly is bigger. I’m so thankful to you all! Going to have a shower!!! This has gone on for months...thanks!!!

  36. There's no reason why local authorities for example can't install chargers and supply electricity. Look at chargeplace Scotland for example. I guess it depends wether you think the costs should be paid by everyone, or people that use them. However I do think that public-run chargers should be charged at a price that pays for the initial installation and ongoing maintenance, I don't think they should be taxpayer funded in the long run (no issue with initial capital being provided by taxpayers, as long as this is paid back with interest). Electricity at market rates is unlikely to happen even if they are publicly owned. Ultimately, the setup costs of these things is fairly low in the grand scheme of things. I see no reason why public and private offerings can't coexist... let them compete to provide the best service at the lowest cost!

  50. No, you go and troll somewhere else. This forum is for people interested in canals and canal boating, not entitled law breaking freeloaders looking for cheap accommodation.
