  1. Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving And revolving at 900 miles an hour. It's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned, The sun that is the source of all our power. Now the sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see, Are moving at a million miles a day, In the outer spiral arm, at 40, 000 miles an hour, Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way.

  5. We have had the polar opposite this latest couple of weeks with people on "pikey" boats assuming we are going to be snobby until we have spoken too and had drinks with them. It works both ways ?

  8. Well that's 1100 tons delivered to Knostrop Wharf in three loads. John Branford has had instructions from CRT not to load more than 6' 6" (representing 350 tons) which certainly knocks the gilt off the gingerbread in more ways than six. It also removes any profit from the operation. Bit of finger pointing going at the moment with CRT maintaining that there was an 'incident' on the first trip up the canal involving a rowing skiff below Knostrop Lock, close to the Leeds Rowing's Stourton Boathouse. As we crept by loaded, a boat had to move out of the channel and the crew hold onto the trees beside the bank. On our return, we had similar experiences on four separate occasions, but these have not been labelled 'incidents'! The cynical might see this as a way of CRT diverting attention away from the dredging issues, while others might question the wisdom of establishing a rowing club with its launching pontoon sticking way out into the deep water channel on the approach to Knostrop Lock: an area that will be required for winding once Stourton Wharf is established just downstream. Whilst I'm all in favour of CRT broadening its appeal to a diverse selection of waterway users, there remains a question in my mind as to whether 500 ton barges and flimsy rowing skiffs are compatible ............ and should they be sharing the same stretch of commercial waterway? Shades of canoes and tunnels methinks!

  11. That takes me back! My mum used to love those. I would try to snaffle some from her when I was a kid. We called them Minging Morso's ? You would do garlic burps for a week after eating them.

  14. Of late I have noticed the term " Cruising season " or " Season " creep into an ever increasing amount of threads. Please desist. I dont know wether its new boaters or Hobby boaters or if its no specific group but there is NO boating season, if such as CART keep seeing that people believe there is an open and closed pat of the year then we will eventualy play into their hands. Taa muchly.

  15. Basically, what it comes down to, is that some people are stupid, and therefore have stupid attitudes. One should pity them, and be pleased that one is not like them, and that one can enjoy playing about in boats, than which nothing is better.

  17. The cruiser stern covers the engine, the engine has to go somewhere so if you have a 'trad' then the engine (taking up the same amount of space) has to go inside the boat. With a 'real' trad the engine has its own room 1/4 of the way along the boat and the benefit is that you can use it for drying clothes. With a modern trad the engine sits inside the back-end of the boat but is covered up so you don't really gain any usable space. We have had Cruiser stern boats and Trad boats, the Cruiser stern wins every time. You can put a 'pram hood' on it making an extra room which in the winter is ideal as a drying room, leaving wet clothing and boots etc and stops the 'living part' getting wet and muddy. Edit fpr spooling mistooks. There you are 2 replies and a unanimous vote.

  23. Thank you, I will bear that in mind! No, I don't work for Serco. Whenever anyone worked up a spreadsheet for me I always asked what consistency checks they had built in. Occasionally this got a blank look, which rang alarm bells. For example a column of figures, with several sub-totals and then a grand total. It's very easy to get this wrong (and especially so if you add extra rows later on and forget to amend the sub-total formula), and very easy to write a consistency check for the grand total. I also spent a lot of time on implementing this excellent report (which followed the West Coast franchising saga) in my bit of the bureaucracy, which should be read by anyone who runs models or algorithms. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/review-of-quality-assurance-of-government-models In the test and trace context, I am just gobsmacked that nobody thought to build in a daily (and independent) check that the number of rows of data imported into the master database was equal to the number sent in by the various labs. It's just basic accounting.

  27. Thank you for explaining about the electricity, I use a gaming PC alot & am unsure of the amps it draws, how would I find out? I understand about the "closeness" of other boats but still prefer that to something like this

  36. Also be sure to check the galley tap itself. Many taps have a little filter on the spout which can become clogged, consequently slowing the flow considerably. The filter usually simply unscrews out of the tap. It could be that the pump flow is fine and it’s only the tap that’s clogged.

  38. CaRT claim that a quarter of their income is from boaters, so we paid for one side of that sign. If you look very carefully there is a mooring bollard icon on the side facing the water to let you know there are mooring bollards there, just in case you haven't seen them, what with them being painted white, so we get our moneys worth. The far side no doubt says "Away From the Locks" as @Bod reckons. The left hand side says "To the Water, Where It Is Better By". They missed a trick, 'cause the top doesn't say "To the Ground" and buried in the concrete it might not say "To the Sky", for the benefit of any water voles tunnelling through the bank. Water voles being another CaRT favourite for spending money. Jen

  40. I would try to wash a bit of the dark stain off with a damp cloth. It is probably just dust. I have not seen such dsrk staining, even with coal stoves, which run much hotter than radiators. If it doesn't come off, then all that is needed is a quick rub down and re-varnish.

  42. I know someone who left her job to join the security for HS2 she came back after a few months telling me all sorts of behaviour of her fellow guards. So in keeping with the animal theme, it was straight from the horses mouth There needs to be an independent investigation into their methods as it seems they've been given carte blanche to do what they want As for HS2 itself It's requirements have changed post covid with everyone working from home and possibly continuing to do. Every independent body looking at it says it's not giving value for money. It'll take a strong person to say enough is enough and pull the plug on it. But it seems there's been so much spent that they have got to carry on

  46. Izz love,, you have now been molested by the four most antagonistic, argumentative, opinionated, attention seeking members of this forum. If you have survived and are still here, well done. Ignore them for long enough and they will go away, they are like naughty children, want to be heard all the time and hate being pulled up, especially by a woman. They get nasty at a whim, but are only internet tigers, not real bad people. I don't care what your boat , my boat or anyone else's boat looks like or how much Brasso they waste wearing the brass away needlessly.
