  1. They may have been boating for a long time ( don't know) but they are certainly not very experienced boaters. If they were experienced she would have shouted down to the skipper immediately she saw water pouring onto the front deck and he should have seen the water coming through the gate and moved the boat back. Instead, she went into panic mode (but still filming!) and he just stood on the back deck completely unaware of the situation. An experienced boater would be watching all the time the boat was in the lock and would instinctively take action. As I said, they may have been boating for a while but there is no way they are experienced boaters. Some people watch and learn quickly and others think they know it all and carry on regardless. 3. I am sure it has been said in one of the previous posts but as CRT are powerless to act against so-called continuous cruisers mooring for months in the same spot and covering the footpath with all their worldly goods and rubbish, what is the point of them making yet more rules that only worry the rule-respecting good boaters.

  16. Mrs Melly, these newbie vloggers have been continuously cruising for nearly 3 1/2 years. At what point does one amass sufficient experience to be a moderately experienced narrowboat vlogger?

  17. Middle Level Navigation. If anyone is wondering about the new licencing arrangements for the ML, this letter (sent to boaters who are based there) sets out the arrangements for this year. If you have an EA or Gold licence, and are not based on the ML, then you don't need to do anything (top of second page). 2021 is a different year. I am encouraging MLC to add this info to their website.

  19. If you had a paddle, then you wouldn't need a starter motor. Wonder how fast you'd need to go before you could jump start the engine by putting the prop in to gear?

  20. First of all I read post 9 as asking why one was needed not stating one is not needed. Secondly you really need to assess each poster's expertise in the subject area. I have seen little to suggest that in electrical topics Old Goat knows more than Wotever and others who have provided good quality discussion. It is by discusson that we all learn. FWIW I too say Airlink is the IT usually recommended especially after,as I understand it, Victron (I think) ones were found to be wrongly wired. My view on the subject is that some form of "mains earth wire" isolation is required but if it is to be an IT or GI depends on the use it will get put to and if one can afford an IT. For example if you just popped into marinas now and again and used the shoreline overnight a GI with status indication is likely to be sufficient but if you were on a shoreline 24/7/365 then an IT may be a safer bet.

  22. ? Are the inaccurate meters digital or proper moving needle jobbies? If they are proper analog then offset (incorrect zero) and even hysteresis (sticky needles) can be an issue as well as "calibration". If they are cheap digital meters then there still might be an offset error. Ideally you should check the calibration at two different currents. Are these meters Hall effect devices? The spec on some of the cheapo ammeters is quite poor, the voltage is usually half ok but the current can be something like +/- 3%, so if its a 300amp range then thats an error of 9 amps. A little bit of OCD is not a bad thing, maybe it should be called ATD (attention to detail) or CAW (careful and accurate workmanship) " ................Dave

  26. While we moored there (4 years up until june last year) facilities were... Elsan rubbish disposal pumpout (token operated) diesel water electric gas bottles when we first went there (and for the first two years) the marina was basic but pleasant and seemed cared for, pontoons were cleaned regularly, holes in the stone road were refilled etc. Eric (the harbourmaster) could be contacted easily and he had contact details for the owners of all boats in the marina. by the third year it was clear that the marina owner was having little to no involvement, Eric was quite open about there being post / cheques / cash sat in the office for over a year before the owner collected them, Eric was also aware of several boats that hadn't paid mooring fees for over a year but the owner didn't care, our own cheque for mooring was written in february but wasn't cashed until the end of december. also it was noticeable that maintenance & repairs were not being done (like a pontoon snapped by a boat not repaired). for the 4th year it was late spring before we got to the boat and it was noticeable that a lot of boats were away (not unusual) but there were not the number of parked cars expected for the number of missing boats. Asking neighbouring boats we found out there had been a falling out between Eric & the owner resulting in Eric & a fair number of other boats leaving, with Eric gone nobody knew who now held the marina mobile (not that it mattered because it was never answered), gas bottles / pumpout tokens / diesel etc impossible to get.

  28. Yes, but not just foreigners. As I see it, they are interchangeable in some circumstances. Both of the below examples work, I believe, with no difference in meaning between them. The dog is asleep, don’t startle him. The dog is sleeping, don’t startle him. Sure, if you want to use fall as the verb then it’s pretty obvious that you’d use asleep as the adverb but I’d say that many English folk would also struggle with the difference between the two words in certain circumstances.

  36. It's partly a mess because it's almost impossible to know what today's rules are, as our great leader has recently proved. If they change at midnight, how are you supposed to find out? No-one listens to local radio, what's left of it, there's no real local papers left, tv local news is rubbish, so everyone gets their info from Facebook, gods help us.. I visited a friend on the Wirral yesterday, which is under local rules, and neither if us could make head or tail of them. Over the road, in Cheshire, it's national rules. 12 pages of mixed advice, law changes and suggestions published at midnight and then threatening thousand pound fines? It's just chaos. The only sensible behaviour is to keep out of the way of as many people as you can, wear a mask when required if only out of politeness and regard for other people's feelings, and grab the first vaccine that comes along.

  41. The answer I gave explains it well enough. Threatening enforcement action on boaters who are behaving within the law IS persecution IMO. You have a strange view on what hypocrisy entails. It is perfectly possible (and not hypocritical) to hold the view that preventative action, for example to prevent a stoppage, is a good thing; whilst also holding the view that statutory bodies should be held to the highest possible standards when it comes to their legal duties. Hoping CRT will take preventative action over one matter does not mean wanting CRT to take preventative action on an entirely different matter. Surely you can see this?

  49. It all depends on the design of your filler Mine is a pipe sticking up out of the deck with a screw on cap so I drilled through them both and fitted a long padlock. If you have the more conventional flush type check the size as there are at least two sizes and the commercial locks need to be the right size TC
