Both reports are wrong. Both boats were new liveaboards who had decided that mooring in the tunnel had benefits. Firstly they could find somewhere to tie up that was quiet. Secondly they thought it might be warm and cosy to keep the rooftop crap dry Thirdly no pesky enforcement staff would bother them. It went horribly wrong on the re opening of canals post covid when some hire boat decided to go through the fume filled tunnel, the smoke caused by the incessant running of knackered 1.5 bmcs because the solar wasnt working well. This report came from Conservative hq, so must be wholly accurate. The hirer was requested to do a U turn at the entrance to the tunnel ,but claimed it was impossible. The incident was deemed to be his fault.3 points

I don't think we need worry. Unless there was a slave trader called Mr Caldon or Sir Trentandmersey we are unlikely to be targeted. After all, no-one has stopped going to cheap car washes because they are usually staffed by trafficked folk, have they?2 points

They're merely seeking out high profile activities with a feel good factor that can be easily sourced out and grabbed by the media, while appearing to be doing warm fuzzy stuff. Scoring smarty points while ignoring the prime business objective (make no mistake it is a business!) always smacks of diversionary tactics by a weak or ineffective executive team.2 points

Have C&RT so many problems finding things that they can waste money on? Would it not be easier to be a canal charity and look after their asset, spending the money where it will do physical good instead of a daft wellbeing publicity seeking silliness?2 points

50 million mains fridges are cheaper to produce than one thousand 12 volt fridges if you get what I mean.2 points

There is a BIG difference between getting made redundant and getting sacked. Very misleading and even embarrassing article by the toilet of the canal media. Very bad news as well.2 points

Surely a car only needs washing when you are about to trade it in or sell it!1 point

Hello Tom Chargery have just released a DC contactor that works specifically with the BMS. It only requires the one contactor which works with faults on either the charging and discharging cycles of my Li. The real benefit is that it only consumes 11ma which is a massive improvement on my current setup and simple plug and play install ? Peter1 point

Life's too short to worry about 12mA. My TV/sky uses 9Ah in a few hours. If you have Li's then you dont worry about power nearly as much.1 point

But the NT have something to offer their members such as free access to buildings or free parking. We were members of the NT when we used to visit the Lake District a lot as it saved us more on parking than the membership. CRT don't really have anything to offer in return for becoming a friend that you can't get for free.1 point

I look on C&RT as somewhat akin to the National Trust. Both preserve assets for access by the public, but also charge for access/ services, have plenty of employees, and struggle to raise enough money to fund everything they would like to do ...1 point

When I bought my boat I came on here to ask advice much the same as you are doing. Contrary to some of the advice given I was happy to trust the independent seller who recommended a surveyor, I was present when the survey was done and I was confident the surveyor had done a honest job, picking up some odd minor bits here and there which the seller corrected. However...if the survey had gone anything like yours has and I had previously been told 'everything is done just needs blacking' I would be very very skeptical. I would immediately start considering that there should be a significant price reduction and I would be commissioning my own survey. I'm generally quite bold with taking risks, happy to assess the situation and go with my gut on things, more so than the advice that is generally given on here...but on this one...I would be SUPER cautious. And final point, as others have said, try not to get emotionally attached. Decisions of the heart hurt the wallet.1 point

We are hoping it is going to be a bit quieter this next couple of weeks now that the weather has cooled down and gone into autumn mode and the little darlings are back at school.1 point

The very same! In fact when that film was made he had already been in business for 4 years. Chiltern was one of his original camping boats.1 point

Rust in bow locker and non working bowthruster could well be connected if they are in the same space...especially if theres a hole in the bowthruster tube......quite possible even after 7years as several boat builders do NOT protect the tube before launch. If it DOES need 10 anodes, these should be put on at the same time as the blacking, as otherwise, your boat is not fully protected, AND you will have an additional cost of lift out and welding them on in the near future. The broker probably just wants to get it back in the water and take your money as fast as possible. The surveyor(if you have paid them), should have recommended a guide price without the work done, or a price IF his recommendations were carried out. Fall out of love with the boat for 24 hours, get your sensible hat on and dont take crap from the broker.1 point

But that is a definition of charity with a small c. CaRT, however, is a Registered Charity, with capital letters, which is defined and regulated by law and does not depend at all on what a dictionary, or anyone else, chooses to define it. There may well also be organisations that fit the above dictionary descriptions but, if not Registered then neither their obligations and benefits, and those of their donors, are protected. Interestingly, as the purpose of creating the Charity Commission, which registers charities and regulates them, was to provide such protection, the requirement to cite the charity number in many places has led to many donors and grant givers to use this as a primary form of identity check and 'guarantee' that the recipient is genuine etc. There are exceptions known as Exempt Charities. They have the general benefits of being a Registered Charity but self regulate or are regulated separately. One of the most numerous are the Parochial Church Councils which form the legal basis of each CofE parish/parish church. The lack of a charity number can sometimes be a pain! I meant a Registered Charity in general -which was the point being made in the post to which I referred. At some level, all charities have to make a profit in the long term or, like any organisation, they go bust.1 point

A charity is simply a company that does not have shareholders and does not pay a dividend to those shareholders, any "profit" must go back into itself, it does not have to do "charitable work" or give anything away to the needy. Most Universities are now very big and ruthless businesses but they are also charities. ...............Dave1 point

There is always commercial REC BSLRD (Bi-stable latching relay driver) which I'm using for my overcharge protection. https://www.solar4rvs.com.au/rec-bi-stable-relay-driver-bslrd-for-bottom-end-sw And here: https://www.off-grid-systems.de/REC-Touch-Display-BMS-4S-16S-Q_2 Alternatively another low powered solution is a motorised battery switch as used by me (for my loads) and Dr Bob. No complicated electronic circuits to build and understand, but maintaining the advantages of low parasitic power drain. https://www.bepmarine.com/en/701-md If starting again though, I'd be looking for a BMS with direct support for bi-stable relays. Agreed, although having just been involved in an unfair dismissal case that took 2.5 years to complete, and cost £33k up front in legal fees, the reality is not quite as easy as saying they can claim for unfair dismissal. In practice you have to have a lot of mental strength and financial resource.1 point

Started unloading at 08.45 and left Leeds empty at 13.15 carrying 200 tons water ballast to get under A&C bridges. Grounded seriously twice and arrived back on Goole moorings for 20.30. Next load from Albert Dock, Hull due to be loaded Wednesday with Farndale departing Goole on Tuesday. Loads to be limited to 350 tons while CRT make a few ‘important decisions’ which, hopefully, will be guided by reference to the Transport Act 1968, Section 105, amended 2012.1 point

I think you will find pedestrians have also been killed, by other pedestrians. I am not sure where your argument leads but I think it may be helmets for all people outside, or compulsory personal registration plates. But it remains that the biggest risk to us pedestrians is some numpty in charge of a ton of metal, insulated form surroundings, dozily hitting the wrong pedal or something and just running someone over. It might help if people who drive had to take a test every 5 years - that might actually reduce deaths and serious injuries. Plus of course banning car radios and sound systems.1 point

I think it is only a requirement when they are sold not once they have been sold. I may be wrong. EDIT to add it is a requirement in NI and the Isle of Man but not the rest of the UK.1 point

I have great trouble seeing what's on the screen in the daylight, in fact nothing, fine at night or indoors. It's a lovely phone, £12-50p from Tesco's about 15 years ago. A couple of years ago I attended a birthday party of relations in Leigh-On-Sea, I knew exactly where I was going but missed the turnings name, I think I was overtaking a bus at the time. This turning was off the main A13 that runs through to Southend. I had driven past Westcliff and realized I had gone way too far past the turning. I was now late for the party so I turnined around and stopped in Westcliff high st to phone my cousin for directions. Blow I couldn't see anything on the Nokia's screen, I had to make it dark, so I climbed into the boot and lowered the lid to make it nice and dark. I made the phone call to my cousin who walked down to the main road to watch out for me and guide me to the party which she did. Because of the embarrasment of climbing in and out of the boot in Westcliff high street on a busy Saturday afternoon I now carry a black plastic bin bag which I pull over me and my phone to make phone calls cosily inside it. People walking by still stand and watch this performance though which forces me to find a quiet side turning. People are a nuisance. I could get a van to make a phone call in the back I suppose biut that's too drastic, or get under the car with the phone pretending it's broken down. The screen saver is not on. I don't want a Smartphone, I've fallen in love with my beatiful small Nokia 2610. Anyone think of any improvment on the black bin bag please or a way to enhance the screen so I can read it in daylight. Thank yoo.1 point

I'd guess there will be no change whatsoever. I keep Poppy on lead for similar reasons, and we both often jump out of our skin when a cyclist passes, with no warning, no bell. I sometimes feel like saying something, but they've gone before you know it, and I'd guess there is more chance of confrontation than a change in cyclist behaviour.1 point
