  2. Eeek some of my Li batteries arrived today from China (the rest coming tomorrow hopefully), so I'd better get on with it... For my own clarity of thought I drew out the system. Quite simple superficially but behind the home made battery monitor and alternator controller is a fair bit of software with lots of data whizzing around over CANBUS. In summary the battery monitor keeps and eye on (and broadcasts on CANBUS) the individual cell voltages and battery temperature. In emergency, it can disconnect the battery using the Tyco bistable relay, but hopefully that will never happen! It controls the Combi when it is in charging mode to ensure no excessive cell voltage and make it switch to float when the SoC reaches the desired value. It drives the FETs / resistors for top balancing. The Alternator controller adjusts charging voltage to ensure no cell over-voltage, reduces alternator output if it gets too hot, and switches to a float voltage at the target SoC (adjustable by a 3 position switch: 50%, 80%, 100%). Also has a slow charge switch to avoid unnecessarily fast charging when cruising for the day. The Mastershunt of course broadcasts such data as SoC, battery current etc over CANBUS Ooh look, no LA batteries in sight! Standing by for incoming...

  6. Started unloading at 08.45 and left Leeds empty at 13.15 carrying 200 tons water ballast to get under A&C bridges. Grounded seriously twice and arrived back on Goole moorings for 20.30. Next load from Albert Dock, Hull due to be loaded Wednesday with Farndale departing Goole on Tuesday. Loads to be limited to 350 tons while CRT make a few ‘important decisions’ which, hopefully, will be guided by reference to the Transport Act 1968, Section 105, amended 2012.

  7. There is a BIG difference between getting made redundant and getting sacked. Very misleading and even embarrassing article by the toilet of the canal media. Very bad news as well.

  12. Agreed, as soon as you can remove it without peeling the paint off. Its much worse to leave it if it gets wet, you will end up repainting. There are better tapes that will give you more time but they are expensive. For coach lines you really should use 3M fine lining tape, it peels off easily and gives a very sharp edge to the line.

  15. Hello everyone, I'm looking to move my boat 70ft nb from Saltisford to Hartford marina in Cambridgeshire. I've not taken her out for trips of this length but am confident with general handling/locks/mooring etc. I've looked into the route and asked for a quote for having it moved. I understand that the River Nene floods and Salter's lode needs to be timed correctly due to the boat length. I'm happy that the engine etc is in good condition but haven't done much river cruising. Does anyone have any knowledge about how difficult the Nene/Salter's lode/River negotiations could be? I might have a friend along to help, either experienced or not. Any thoughts or other observations would be very gratefully received Thanks

  17. Looks great. No need for LA batteries. (I assume the Combi can function in powerpack mode without a battery in circuit, should the relay open.) How are you driving the balancing MOSFETs? I used opto-isolators to do the level translation to the gates of each MOSFET. MP.

  18. Not I.. Putting on cardi and woolen jersey - when I were a lad, mebe a milennium ago it was infra dig / not kosher/ not done / whatever to have any fenders down while cruising and (though I never tested it) NONE of the respected boatbuilders (sadly all now 'passed away') would dream of fitting attachments for what pass as 'fenders' nowadays because of the danger of being caught up in locks and other hazards. Hey, ho - boating has changed, it's more about living aboard, statically and only using the boat to go for water and provisions. Stupidly I consider boats were for cruising the system, taking an interest of the locality through which one passes, considerig other boaters, having one's connection with whoever is local and whatever is local. Enough - I've more to say, but I doubt if the readership is particularly interested (other than some of the regulars)..

  26. I had a Sterling Inverter (not a charger) whose fan came on according to the load current and not according to temperature. In theory it came on when the load on the inverter reached 2/3 capacity and went off again when it dropped to 1/3 capacity; at least that was the theory. The inverter came in a range of different sizes, ours was a 1.5kW version and sure enough the fan came on when the power consumption exceeded 1kW (even if only for a fraction of a second), but it didn't turn off again until the load dropped below 50 watts because the smallest unit in the range had a capacity of 150W and the switch-off figure had been set not as 1/3 rated capacity but as "1/3 of the rated capacity of the smallest unit in the range". The result was that the fan ran for most of the time; the spike when the fridge turned on was enough to trigger it, and it didn't stop again until the fridge, TV, VCR, phone chargers, etc were all off. The trouble was that the fan was quite noisy, and the unit was positioned underneath our daughter's bed so it kept her awake. Sterling exchanged the unit for another which performed identically, then admitted that I'd apparently found a software fault but they weren't going to fix it because I was the only person complaining. After much arguing, CS agreed to exchange it for a more powerful quasi-sine inverter of the same value; after it destroyed out TV, phone chargers, and the control unit of our gas-oven, I sold it on eBay.

  29. I doubt an ordinary person would hear slap from worn pistons above the diesel knock. What you have just said sounds and behaves more like diesel knock to me which is "normal" and tends to be more to do with fuel quality than anything else. Until we can get a positive identity for that pipe so we know what area to think about I feel rather stumped. Some of the symptoms seem to counter each other. We really should not guess on this one until some diagnostic procedures have been done. A compression test would not go amiss but even if the compressions are low it would not rule out damaged or missing injector heat shields so the injectors would ideally have to come out for inspection before undertaking major engine work. A Broom 35 may well have an engine oil cooler fitted to a 1.5 because the hull is at least estuary capable so could be run at maximum speed for long periods.

  30. With the weather as it has been, you will probably get away with it until today.....however, temps are due to plummet, and overnight frosts and damp are expected from tonight onwards. Tape gets damp, you are stuffed.

  31. In 2017 near Vandenesse and with the regular lock keeper who we know. She zooms along on a moped between locks and no matter what the weather is always cheerful. The wonderful village of Chateauneuf en Auxois looks down on the canal.

  34. Gad to see you're using the green tape. My own opinion - take the tape off as soon as you've completed the top-coat and it's gone 'tacky'. Leave this for a few days to harden, then re-mask for the details. Again, my opinion - 4 days won't be too bad in the current conditions, but to be safe, I wouldn't leave masking tape on that long. Sounds a bit of a faff, but much better than having to scrape off dried tape, then rub the paintwork down and start again!! Kevin

  35. I've used the G string app to measure rpm. The formula above is I think correct for a two cylinder four stroke engine (one bang per revolution). A four cylinder engine will (should!) do two bangs a revolution, so 1500 RPM is 50 Hz (divide by 30). My tacho has not worked for over 20 years.

  38. I suppose the CRT Commercial Transport managers were all there at the end to give you a certificate and the latest issue of cycling weekly(featuring the new cinder towpaths that you can commute to work on around Leeds). Shameful that CRT tried to stop this, shameful that they didnt pull out all the stops to make it happen, and shameful that the people trying to make the waterways work as they should have not got CRT bending over backwards to support and replicate this across other areas where water transport makes common sense. Well done anyone involved, and boy, I would love to have a steer of one of those.

  42. Well mine were reading 11.0v at 8.30 this morning, with all my alarms going off? That was because I was doing an annual test of my lithiums though! Still holding exactly the same capacity as when installed 2 years ago -: around 280ah. Probably could extract more, but that's as far as I like to push them, and an easily repeatable test. Main thing is no detectable loss after 2 years. Tom

  46. If you do use the bell as a cyclist, you will get people swearing at you because they think you’ve used the bell to say ‘get out of the way’. It’s hard to get it right when folk interpret everything through the lens of whatever resentments they hold anyway. A bit like ‘nearly being mown down’ is a way to describe a cyclist passing safely without incident on shared use path.

  48. But their quite happy telling everyone how much money they haven’t got and how their life on the canal is over as they can’t afford the repairs on their old boat and pleading poverty. Why not let people know how it’s suddenly all changed?
