  1. Only solution is to mount a big mirror square on at the front. If their light blinds you then it also blinds them.

  11. I'm a bit confused. Any epoxy can go over itself? Either overcoat within the maximum overcoating time as specified in the TDS or key with an appropriate grit paper and recoat. If you've found an epoxy that can go over bitumen and does what you need it to do then good luck to you. However, I would have thought that at some point you will need to get the whole lot off and that might be a pain. But let us know how it goes.

  13. Listen to the advice above. You're wasting your money putting Jotamastic 87 over bitumen. I've used Jotamastic 87 extensively when I worked in a boat yeard and I've also got 4 coats on my widebeam. It's a great product but you need to follow the technical data sheets to the letter. https://www.jotun.com/Datasheets/Download?url=%2fAG%2fAG__515__Jotamastic+87__Euk__GB.pdf https://www.jotun.com/us/en/b2b/paintsandcoatings/products/Jotamastic-87.aspx

  20. No, the 28 days starts when you leave the Bridgewater currently, so anyone reaching Leigh on the L&L today can't return onto the Bridgewater until the 29th, unless they pay £40 for it. From September they can do it free, but need to book it. The 28 day clock starts ticking again once they leave the Bridgewater on the return trip. Many of the active boaters have full CRT licences. Admittedly they get a large discount on them (75%?) but many have them.

  21. You are right the first world is the problem, and big oil will spend whatever it takes to keep us using it. I try with my electric boat and electric truck,. I am building up a small electric car for Jayne which all helps Unfortunately most people do think that global warming is someone else's fault, and not their range Rover and lifestyle to go with it

  25. I think you are right about it becoming the new normal, England's highest temperature (38.7 C/101.7F) was only a year ago (25th July 2019) so within the space of two years we have had the highest and third highest temperatures ever recorded in England. it is merely a matter of time before we hit 40C and above. As far as the virus wiping out 80% of the population, it would rather depend which 80% it took. If it left us in the First World (principal contributors to the problem) untouched it wouldn't really solve anything until such a time as we stop creating the pollution that is driving this.

  26. If there's plenty of water running down the Rochdale, as often happens, then fast cycling the top lock of the nine washes the tunnel towpath quite well. We have been scowled at by a couple of blokes with completely wet trousers when the towpath had just been ankle deep a minute before ...

  32. One day last week was 20 degrees cooler than exactly one year ago on the same date. Extrapolating from these figures, science tells us that within 12 years the Earth will have cooled below absolute zero.

  34. Black Prince ex-hire-boat-owner here, I'd highly recommend a hire boat purchase, particularly if you're a first time owner. Can't speak for all hire boat manufacturers nor can I speak for all of the boats, but I would definitely consider another Black Prince. She has a bumps and bruises that's for sure, but is built like a tank - the reinforcement in the bow is something to behold! In our first fortnight of owning her we were rammed at full speed amidships by a hire boater - there was barely a chip in the paintwork. In some sense going through the wringer and only having a few dents is more reassuring than a boat that's in pristine condition. Obviously a survey is essential - luckily our surveyor said that the dents are all cosmetic. What did you decide, in the end?

  38. It's not at all compatible, which was why I '!?' the idea on the OP. As I said, I think the idea of J87 over anything but shotblasted steel is a dead end and a crossed wire with the yard. HOWEVER - Ballastic Epoxy is touted by SML as to be able to be top coated with further epoxy coating. It's actually down as a primer suitable to go over bitumen, though they told me a topcoat was optional and it's fine on its own as blacking. What a time to be alive.

  40. It's not just you or your age, they are awful. We've been out quite a bit, and I've moved quite a few boats for folks over lockdown, and they are getting more common all the time. Last time I came through Blisworth, I had to use my waterfall umbrella as an eye shield for one boat, twin LED lamps, one straight at me. I always keep a big LED lamp at the back for emergencies or if I stop to look along an access shaft or something anoracky like that. As the steerer came towards me, I turned the light on towards him which resulted in shouts and anger. As we passed, I told him I'd been looking at the same from his boat for the last 10 minutes.

As before check these crimps are right for your tool.(ooh matron!) N

  49. Just to clarify on the alternator thing, whilst I can’t speak for your model, there was no real “major surgery” required for mine. The brushes and regulator were in 1 housing held on by 2 screws plus a third for an electrical connection to D+. I simply got a replacement brush/regulator module from ebay for about £15 on which I did the “major surgery” ie snipped the 3 wires to the regulator, and added 1 wire to ground one of the brushes. The wire from my regulator connects to the other brush. So to swap between the standard setup and my setup requires the plastic cover over the back of the alternator to be removed, and the 3 screws undone to remove the brush/reg module and replace it with the other one. Not that I am now expecting ever to have to re-fit the original brush/reg module, but it remains a 5 minute job. Well as it happens, it was too awkward to do it with the alternator in situ so to the 5 mins add the time it takes to remove and replace the alternator, just to get access. 1 2 switch you have labelled as 200A but if it’s 300A that is better! Yes I appreciate that there is no intention to use 5kva but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen! I am reminded of one of the first times we had Jeff’s parents on board. His mother trying to be helpful at breakfast, with one sweep of her hand and before I could scream, turned on the 2kw electrics kettle, the Nespresso coffee machine (about 1.6 kw IIRC) and the toaster (950w). Our 2500va Mastervolt didn’t much like that! So you’d better have a couple of spare 250A fuses!
