  4. I'm very sorry you didn't receive a call back, it is policy to contact all callers even if we are know we are unable to undertake the work. However, calls do go to voice mail if I'm with a client as I aim to keep focus on the client /task in hand but then do return all calls when I listen to the voice mail messages.

  5. milady would be better off returning to Kansas and doing her boating on the vast plains where no-one will interfere with her knots. ......................... or perhaps settle in Pitlockry (the only reference to which is found in another US State - South Carolina I believe). yes I know exactly where Pitlochry is, having spent several years in Dundee. for gawd's sake this is a right tempest in a teapot. get over it!

  6. No its NOT, it's horrible, awful, and still flooded. Gang warfare everywhere and multiple stabbings and deaths at the locks every day...... The Navvy has burnt down and the Soar Bridge inn is now an hostel for drug addicts. Hope this helps.?

  7. It doesn't matter what the Government or CRT say, the canals are open again according to the volume of moving boats round here....and they areant day cruisers. Perhaps it was the Cummings effect, tied to the weather......but hey, whatever, go enjoy and stay safe.

  9. OK, so on Friday 5th June HW according to the PLA's tidetables is 1319 GMT, ie (rounded) 1415 BST. High Water at Brentford and Teddington will be 1515 BST (assuming normal summer fresh water flows). That aligns with CRT opening the lock at 1315, ie 2 hours before local HW. It would normally be open until 1715, but clearly they are having staffing difficulties hence closing at high water. Richmond weir will be lifted at about 1330. You can check the times with the PLA foreman there : 020 8940 0634 So I would recommend leaving Teddington (and I mean leaving, not starting to undo your mooring lines and start your engine above the lock!) at 1245, it's three miles downstream from there to Richmond. You can pay to go through Richmond lock if you want to, but I wouldn't bother. It's then another 2 miles down to Brentford, when you will be punching the tide. You've got nearly two hours to get there. The entrance to Brentford Creek is hard to spot. There's a pontoon on the left (north bank) just before, for Brentford Dock marina, and then the creek is on the left just before a silver piece of "modern art". You can explore on google streetview if you like (which covers the entire tideway). I would stay on the right hand side of the river until you can see up the Creek (and the lock with "Thames lock" in large letters), and then ferry glide across the river and up the creek. Hope this helps. (PS: the Teddington Lockkeeper should let you out when you want to go. Just be firm, and explain why you are going much earlier than normal). PPS Watch the headroom on Brentford HIgh St bridge, which can be restricted around HW. There's an air draft gauge on the left.

  13. Ok, but one of the new ones is a Honda EU2.2i. The man next to him has had a EU20i for some years. A Honda will cost at least twice as much as the opposition but will last umteen times as long, start on half a pull every time and ARE the quietest. As the man said, Honda, end of. James

  16. Just to add best to study the workings of Richmond barrage beforehand, I've found a link for you, apologies if you have already seen this. https://www.boatingonthethames.co.uk/Richmond-Lock-and-Weir When we used to go through Teddington in the summer there could be a dozen or so boats waiting and the lock keeper tried to send us all at the same time which created mayhem when arriving at the smaller lock at Brentford probably not a problem at this time but be prepared to be firm about the time you want to leave. Scholar Gypsy is THE expert.

  17. I found a nice mooring a couple of hundred metres above Kegworth Deep lock. In the morning I discovered (at 0300) I was under the flight path for East Mids airport. I should have stopped a bit further south near Devil's elbow. I did all the way from Leicester to there in a single day, so can't say a lot about moorings, but there did seem to be quite a few pleasant places to stop.

  21. Why not just charge the phone/tablet from the boat battery bank? Save the jump start for when your engine battery goes flat. If you dont have any 12v USB charging points get your sparky to fit some for you.

  25. As an old dinosaur, I’m happy to use long shafts, and ropes, to help manoeuvre in tight situations, rather than thrashing about with a motor. Resolute carried a 16’ ash shaft for years which was used where necessary. I painted them in raddle red. Some modern shorter shafts sink in to mud and have little useful length left to push with. An 8’ cabin shaft, with hook, is more than handy too.

  29. Incest, the game the whole family can play, new from M&B games this Christmas! I remember walking past a moored boat some years ago and the owner popped up like a jack in the box to hurl abuse at me for looking into his boat. When I suggested he should draw the towpath side curtains the abuse got even worse. I smiled at him and wished him a pleasant day which for some reason made him even crosser.

  31. If you are told to moor on the diesel mooring on the advice of the marina owner/CRT, then that is exactly what you would do rather that risk pulling up pins in a F5 or when a big vessel passes by. To be honest, I would want to be 100% secure on any commercial waterway, no point in crossing fingers and toes. I do have a wire rope for securing stuff on roof , or mooring if leaving boat unatended in a dodgy area, and some fat padlocks for the Gas/anchor locks. I don't mind mooring lines beng disturbed, for whatever reason, if people are going to do that, please don't leave the boat insecure! That is the point!

  34. I have a Kipor EG770. Only weighs 10KG and does up to 4 hours on a litre of fuel, depending on load. I chain it to one of the supports for the handrail at the rear of the cruiser deck when it's in use, which is just 3 or 4 months in the winter. Otherwise I completely drain it down, including the carb, and store it under my bed. I run it on the towpath next to my boat. Petrol comes from my motorbike via a syphon tube. My view is that if you're just going to use a genny for battery charging you don't need a 2000w version. I don't know what battery charger you have but on many of them you can 'dial down' the ampage e.g. make a 40a version 20a. Certainly the instruction book for my Sterling suggests this can be done. The vast majority of your running time with a genny will be putting less than 20amps into the charger. So, there may be a relatively short time when the 20a could have been 30a or more if you'd bought a bigger genny but offset that against the lower weight and lower running costs of a smaller genny...

  35. There are some people who shouldn't be using ropes at all if they moor within say 100 metres of anyone else. A padlock and chain would be a more appropriate set-up. What am I saying? ?. Even i who never upsets anyone (?) has one of them lockable plastic covered cables about 5 metres long for when mooring somewhere dodgy. Also, if I moor on say a diesel point outside a marine, or even adjacent to it for a couple of days, I would fully expect lines to be occasionally disturbed.

  39. We have had our boat shuffled around and remoored many times to make best use of available mooring space. Provided it is tied up so as the boat won't get damaged I don't see the problem and certainly don't believe it is a criminal act. You have a lot to learn about inland boating!!

  40. spent half an hour yesterday on google map... think this should be a regular(weekly) thing, boaters describe(or post a pic) a place near canal and everybody else are supposed to guess the location...

  44. You could regard it as a learning opportunity! For everyone, good grammar and spelling comes from getting it wrong and being corrected. I used to use “jealousy” when the correct word should have been “envy” (yes, they are subtlety different!). A similar thing happened with “its” vs it’s”. These were pointed out to me on here. I welcomed the learning, and now I tend to get it right. It can be the case that people have poor spelling and grammar because they are unable to receive correction and thus unable to learn (there are of course other reasons too). Their choice, but in my opinion learning should have a status above pride.
