  3. To let you know that the film has gone live on our Website today www.reelstreets.com With thanks to you once again for all for the help and interesting detail you provided me with. All very absorbing, we learn so much from doing what we do with regard to finding film locations. If anyone is able to provide further information or indeed correct anything with regard to the film please do drop me a line at richard@reelstreets.com Thank you all once again, I know where to come in the future!

  4. And most profuse apologies to the person who retied the grey/red/black boat near Brinklow, presumably after it came adrift while I was away last week, leaving one of their own pins to cross-pin my bow line. It's a fairly new boat to me and I hadn't got round to buying another couple of pins to supplement the mooring hardware that it was sold with. No excuses, I knew it was iffy mooring on such a shit bit of towpath, and I shouldn't have on just two lines and two pins. It was stupid of me to chance it. If you're on here and read this, can I: Give you your pin back? Offer you a beer/whisky by way of apology? Little things like these are one of the things which make the boating community so special, in my humble opinion. Thanks again.

  9. I use 3.2mph and 5min per lock in canalplan. But the real plan come from a spreadsheet that has all our historical times behind so it is based on fact not prediction.

  10. Yes, thanks for the clarification. I'm a compete noob at this so please forgive my misunderstandings of some of the suggestions and terminologies being used and so on. That's why I originally asked for an electrician!

  12. That is an opinion. But should you, me or anyone else make that assertion? I long ago stopped being critical of someones pride and joy floating wreck, its none of my business.

  16. I found it easy. Forget to remove the spanner after adjusting the tappets and try to start the engine. Next job was to repair the pipework to the calorifier.

  18. Maybe it is such antisocial behaviour that has led to the current situation. "I don't want to follow the requests, therefore I'll ignore them"

  21. I prefer it as a spectator sport personally. With the glass of red on the in-side. You know the old saying : "Work fascinates me - I can sit and watch someone do it all day!"

  23. Very sad to hear of John's demise. He was friend of our Captain Dennis Papworth, and I knew him well back in the 1960's. On more than one occasion, we were commandeered for manual labour assistance with the renovation of an old wooden working boat, and we never got payed !! I remember the clinker boats that Balliol mentions, and John also experimented with concrete hire boats, but I don't think they were very successful. One interesting story about John is that one winter in the late 1960's, he helped collect a wooden Butty from Braunston which my friend had bought. They used Pisces to collect the butty, John was on the front end of Pisces when he slipped and fell off into very cold water. Dennis immediately put Pisces into neutral and they drifted along for some time when John suddenly popped up behind the butty. He had demonstrated extereemly brave will power, lying on the bottom of the canal holding his breath whilst two boats passed over him. Apart from being very wet and very cold, he seemed to suffer no ill effects.

  27. For initial calculation purposes (before adjusting for such things as overnight stops) this is taken as 1 day of 23 hours and 12 minutes. These are very long days, so long as to be probably impossible, are you sure you want to do this? I do like canalplan! "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that!"

  30. Thats, fine. Its just some people get upset when we keep asking them questions on how they are testing things, you are not one of those people so just keep plodding away at it and tell us exactly what you are doing

  31. Oh, and while we are at it, are Bradely workshops / Bradely Arm anywhere near the Bradley Arm? (Photos section)

  32. That's one of the reasons you are not allowed to participate on that boat this year. I notice the Dudley Tunnel photos now specify ON FOOT at both ends. Does this mean we must not take boats to the photo locations (as for Wednesbury / Swan Bridge) or just that we can send a runner to photo Dudley Tunnel South without the boat whilst the rest of us do Parkhead locks? If you'd like me to proofread the bonus questions, I'll promise not share them with everyone else until 0755 on the Saturday! (as long as it doesn't disqualify me from entering)

  35. The Walsall has counted in both directions north of Ocker Hill in recent years and for this year it will apparently only score in one direction. I take that to be either direction - but not both - which is the default for all sections unless specifically listed in both directions. I suspect the additional text is just to highlight the change. Did you note that Tame Valley (Ocker Hill) to Newton (Rushall) scores in both directions and that Aston to Salford is scored specifically for each of the two routes? All little changes that keep it fresh. JP

  44. In my opinion spray foam does not need a vapour barrier. The snag with slabs of foam is that there are always small voids, e.g. behind angle iron frames, in awkward nooks and crannies and other odd corners. These are where condensation forms and it does so 24 hours a day and can be hard to eliminate. Spray foam gets everywhere and if it is thick enough its pretty much unbeatable.

  45. Yes you are! Do your washing on the move or even moored up with the engine on, when its finished go fill with water. If you haven't got enough water fill up move away then when washing is over refill with water. Failing that there is a good laundrette in Berko Its not difficult to show consideration for others.

  46. I'm not! Have to say though, fixing the outboard seems a far better solution than hiring cranes, lorries etc to move it.

  48. So ignorant gits that leave their engines running whilst filling with water and don't show consideration for others will cause this facility to be closed. B'stards.

  49. We're actually on the Thames (the canals are too far away...), so our knowledge is more upto date than some on here (ducks for cover).. IMO Chris Cove Smith's book - The River Thames book is much, much better (even though it's equally out of dateas Nicholson's) but is more readable. Amazon has used copies at a good price. The River is 'on reds' at the moment and has been since late last year - that's unusual as is the current weather, but as very few boats venture out anyway, it doesn't spoil the boating! Locks are manned 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, but only if they've got staff. Given that they're all electricialy operated up to Godstow (just above Oxford), it's no real disadvantage other than they're slower to operate. Be friendly to the Keepers, they (or man do) have respect for well crewed NBs as the resident boaters can be prettty useless when it comes to working the locks. You MUST use two lines whether going up or downstream - despite man NBers who insist on using a centre line only - the lockie is liable to 'be on a fizzer' if he allows onle line only - thus it's not a matter of a whim, 'it's the rules'. The water flow in a lock can be very fierce. If you want lots of pubs (not that there are as many as they were) then go down river. If you want scenery and places to moor then go upstream - perhaps to Oxford - which is well worth a visit if you walk down the side streets away from the grockles. I'm happy to waffle on if you want more information....

  50. What a mine of information, thank you all. It will all be incredibly useful to me when I commence "working" on the film and all your facts will make much more sense to me then. It is one of the joys of Reelstreets when a film brings us in touch with people like yourselves that have knowledge, enthusiasm and related stories. I look forward to viewing the film and coming back into the Forum, thank you all again once more.
