  3. They can never move on. That's the horror of nationalist politics. Blame X for all the problems in life. Expel X (or leave X, or whatever). Things stay the same. Keep blaming X for what they did in the past. All problems are always solely X's fault forever. Watch Trump with Clinton. He beat her three years ago and is still obsessed with blaming her for everything that's wrong in the USA. Brexit, Trump, same playbook. They're already preparing the ground to blame the EU for every single bit of trouble that happens after Brexit. The blame game will never be over until the leave generation dies out and our outward-looking kids take us back in.

  4. Being a sore loser is fairly understandable given what was at stake. But what I really struggle to wrap my head around is the number of sore winners I keep coming across. It's as if they simply can't move on.

  7. Let me guess. Another person who thinks that debate must be stifled at all costs and who start by calling people who point out lies as "sore losers". I've seen and met literally dozens of your kind who won't debate and have to make up "facts" (or "probabilities" if you prefer) followed by inevitable name-calling when caught out in lies. It's so consistent, so knee-jerk and, frankly, it's boring and predictable. Give us something original for heaven's sake. Go on, say something interesting. We're hanging on your every word.

  8. It's not a cratch drain. It's on the stern. I don't get why people are taking the piss. One day something might go tits up with their unattended boat and a passer by will decide not to alert anyone on websites like this because they'll only get shit for their good intentions.

  12. Thanks for a magnanimous response to a slightly sarky prompt. The OP was a new member. I doubt they’re going to be sticking around. That’s a shame because broadening the demographic of the forum would make it a better place. JP

  13. Well I say well done to the OP for raising the issue, a non boater taking the trouble to try and alert the boating community to what they believe is a potential problem. Not every one has the same knowledge about boats or who to contact that we all have.

  14. I’m in agreement with @Dav and Pen. If there were punitive costs to the infrastructure manager for having the facility out of use to commercial customers the repair work would have started last week. There’s plenty to do before any work on rebuilding the permanent canal infrastructure would take place. Access agreements, haul roads, site compounds and then clearing the debris that’s been washed in to the channel. If it were an operational railway that stuff would start immediately. I’m sure that’s happened over the past week. But none of that applies so I think we should be grateful that we live in a country that has laws that compel the infrastructure manager to ultimately repair it despite it being of no direct commercial value to the economy. Proof we live in a pretty civilised place. We should always retain a degree of gratitude that the inland waterways are retained as a leisure facility. JP

  16. Looks to me like the water is lapping up to a hull opening, cannot tell if it is an exhaust or a cratch drain.. Surly it is better for the OP to raise the possibility in error than the boat sinking because no one reported it

  22. I do wish peeps would not lump all fossil fuels together. Gas is much cleaner than Coal including CO2 emissions. Its all about the amount of hydrogen in the fuel. Methane (natural gas) is CH4. Therefore when burnt you burn 1 molecule of methane and it needs 2 molecules of oxygen. ie CH4 +2O2 --> CO2 + 2H2O + heat. You get heat from the burning of carbon and heat from the burning of hydrogen. That gives circa 3 tonnes of CO2 for every tonne of methane burnt. Now compare that to coal. Coal is essentially pure carbon. So to burn the same level of oxygen (ie to get the same heat output) you would burn two molecules of coal ie 2C +2O2 --> 2CO2 + heat That gives circa 6tes of CO2 from 2 tes of coal. For the same amount of heat though we have used twice the weight of fuel and emitted 6 times the amount of CO2. The key here is how much hydrogen there is in the fuel as that hydrogen burns very cleanly with oxygen to yield heat and water. Methane is very hydrogen rich. Coal is virtually no hydrogen. Petrol/diesel is more like half way between the two. Methane is therefore OK to burn, Petrol/diesel is poor but coal is diabolical and must be banned NOW! ........but can I keep buying it for our boat stove for the next 20 years please?

  23. I don’t think it’s done knowingly but I can see why the OP wouldn’t be too pleased with the responses they got. It can be quite daunting addressing a group of people you don’t know and many first time posters will be sensitive to the kind of response they get. Too often it’s unwelcoming and established members should take a moment to reflect on that. I know that my less fine moments on the forum have come when I’ve been a bit down myself and hopefully those instances are consigned to the past. I don’t think it’s coincidence the forum seems less tolerant in the winter months. I’m not convinced the boat is sinking either but it is listing and it does have a hull aperture that is partially submerged so the concern is well founded. JP

  25. Do you have any evidence of this? I've just had a look and all I can find is related to banning the sale of housecoal, the same as over here. Scaremongering? The article indicates that naturally 'smokeless' coal will be allowed.

  26. I'm wondering how this will affect those who burn anthracite? OK, not on boats perhaps but domestically. Anthracite is a natural fuel but burns without smoke as does the Welsh dry steam coal currently available from the Ffos-y-Fran open cast. I wonder how the steam heritage sector is going to manage? i've a few cwt stashed to fuel the avatar but reckon I ought to stock up.

  31. There are far better providers of forum software which is (apparently) more stable and much easier to use (user friendly) but they do cost more. VBulletin is one that in used on a couple of forums that I frequent and both have membership numbers, posts and threads in much greater numbers than CWDF. Shouldn't you be ensuring you and the trustees act in the best interests of Boaters, not the Trust (and exec team) who do not always act in the best interest of Boaters, who are your constituents. E. G.s The draconian use of s8 to harass boaters comes to mind when by laws could be used, also claims that terms and conditions must be agreed in order to get a licence, on the grounds that they can override the Act of Parliament.

  38. It is not beyond the wit of engineers and physicists to invent ways of providing 'heat' without CO2 emissions, or by containing it at source, or even collecting it afterwards. The blunt instrument of banning the use of fuel that causes the problem would just delay the solution - until the loss of 'heat' becomes serious and/or the alternative' fuel runs out. A tourniquet around the neck is a quick fix for a nose bleed.

  43. You are of course correct. I have misread the picture. Should have gone to Specsavers, it seems. EDITED TO ADD: However I still don't think we are looking at anything particularly unusual for that particular boat. The picture of the "hole", (whatever it is for), clearly shows a lot of weed growth immediately below it, making me think it is sitting at about its usual level. The "hole" is on the side of the boat that is tilted upwards, rather than downwards, if it is the same one as you can see in the first picture.

  45. I agree. Its a first class case of 'fiddling while Rome burns'. If the CO2 is not addressed, all the particulate matter from coal stoves in the world won't matter a jot.

  47. Thanks for all the advice I bought the Marstons IPA and will drink it later. The generator has been some way down the list of things to recover, with the house as a priority and some small things attended to opportunistically as time has allowed. I stripped it today and have stripped the electrics, fuel system etc. There was a lot of water in the crankcase. I have drained, refilled with oil and pulled it over and then drained again several times over. Oil is now coming out looking clean and bright. Will reassemble tomorrow and report results. By the way, so far I have recovered:- Dishwasher Bosch electric drill Demolition hammer Circular saw Bench saw Petrol Flymo (the damn thing works better than ever, it started first time after dismantling and cleaning!)

  48. You are having a laugh? I doubt there are any narrowboat hulls that have been designed by a Naval Architect. Why would you be concerned about drag when the typical narrowboat does not exceed 5 knots Trigonometry ?
