  3. Always sad to see a sight like this. I sincerely hope that nobody was hurt but we should all use this as a reminder how important it is to ensure our boats are as safe as possible. Have you got a smoke alarm and when did you last test it? Do you have two exits from your boat that are available for you to use and the routes to them are not cluttered? If nothing else if someone reads this and thinking about having an escape plan saves their life then that is forum etiquette enough for the post to stay as far as I am concerned.

  7. In the pub or with a group of friends there are very few things, if any, subjects that are off limits, gallows humor and sarcasm bring it on, in an open public forum it is only good manners to be a touch more considerate.

  16. Thanks! My two penneth: I come to this forum becasue it is full of a different mix of individuals than some others. If I want saccharine platitudes I know how to access Facebook. Yes, we might sometimes upset people unintentionally (and gross personal insults are pretty clearly off-limits around here which is fine) but the choice to be upset lies to a large extent with the reader. I've fallen into one of the bits of river in question myself when somewhat sleep deprived at the start of a relationship which led to some of the saddest (think scattering of small quantities of ashes in the same river for one thing) times in my life. And coming across mention of the location can trigger all sorts of memories. But those are mine, and for me to manage. Largely through black humour with very small audiences/large quantities of libations. If someone posts about it on here and I choose (note: choose) to read it, that is for me to deal with. Black humour and distraction may help some, and offend others. Personally I find it hard to respond to overly-optimistic posts (particularly with as many emojis as characters) which imply things may some how be OK/for the best/... when they clearly are not. I've seen dignified posts from families saying they understand things are at a recovery stage and looking for help with that being replied to with all sorts of insensitive "hope found safe and well" nonsense... But I accept that others may find them comforting/well intentioned and don't suggest they be banned. Equally when someone expresses that they find a comment in poor taste, well, that seems OK too, no? At least two people involved in one of the recent incidents are actively using boaty social media to publicise it... so, possibly more than you'd think? Happy juggling.

  26. I thought someone might ask! Seriously I will try and answer the various points made, respecting commercial confidentiality of course. As is well known the intention always has been (and is) to move sea dredged aggregate from Hull to the new wharf at Stourton (Port Leeds) when it opens - later this year, or more likely early 2021 - both to a potential readymix plant and also 'out of the gate'. However rather unexpectedly an opportunity has recently arisen to move the material into Leeds sooner than expected so the Trust was asked by CBOA if the former Leeds Terminal (at Old Mill Lane Knostrop) could be used on a temporary basis pending opening of Stourton terminal. The wharf at Knostrop has 'protected' status conferred by Leeds City Council at least until Stourton opens and so in principle it can be used. A part of the wharf (the open area) has to be (and is) kept clear for the purpose. However there are two challenges, the first of which was not mentioned in the report. The site is currently fully let which means there is nowhere to store the sand when it's discharged. However through the generosity of one of the occupiers and CRT there may be a way forward - but it may take a bit of time to sort. The second challenge, which is mentioned, is that because the site is already very busy the Trust has had to commission a study by an independent traffic consultant to show that there will be no additional risk to users from the extra road vehicle movements generated within the site , or that any such risks can be mitigated/managed. As the tonnage is relatively small the number of lory movements isn't all that great and it's hoped that this will not be a problem. It's not traffic on public highways that is a concern. In terms of taking traffic away from the proposed Leeds Port this is not envisaged as it's expected to transfer there anyway - although Leeds City planners do see Knostrop as providing a potential additional capacity should demand be greater than Stourton can accommodate - an independent study has shown a huge potential demand. (Stourton is rather better sited for access, has no residential dwellings anywwhere near, and is an industrial zone). As far as the navigation is concerned a survey has shown a small number of locations where some spot dredging or ploughing will be needed (including Knostrop wharf itself) but this can be organised fairly quickly (as has been done before). The frustration of the customer, and indeed of the two barge operators involved, can be readily appreciated - as these things take time. I hope that helps. regards David L

  32. We enter the boat at the stern as a general rule. First thing we do when we arrive is one of us unlocks the security bar on the bow doors. Then we turn on gas and electric masters. However, accidents do happen, most are avoidable with the gift of hindsight.

  36. These are actually very complicated ones that are really designed for industrial remote monitoring. It's unlikely that most people would need a router with these remote configuration options, but @rusty69 got his cheap and @Dr Bob likes to read his batteries a bedtime story when he's in Singapore. He would really like to take his pet LiFePOs with him on holiday, but they are a bit heavy for hand luggage ...

Ive mainly sorted myself.....did phone them when we found the whole of the Perry Barr flight dry a couple of years ago due to paddles being left up....decided that was a bit much for two of us and didnt fancy leaving the boat on its own....to be fair CRT were there in a an hour....phoned them at 8am on a Sunday....two really helpful guys on site just after 9...the four of us got it sorted pretty quick...they even refused cups of tea!

  48. What are you able to do when you see the batteries have a problem, fading fast due to failed cell for instance. I suppose you could order another cocktail from your sunbed somewhere half a world away. Life is to short, KISS means you can enjoy your cocktail in the sun.

  49. The forms have been proofread and approved, the date is set in stone (23rd and 24th May as many have assumed) and the finish booked. Several here have suggested Withymoor with varying degrees of enthusiasm, and that's where it's going to be. Our reasons for choosing there this year include: They are keen to host us, which is always a positive from the organisers point of view They are going to have a bar all weekend and food available It will encourage more boats to travel to "the back of the map", and covering more of the BCN is the primary aim of the challenge. They have also offered to move their own boats so we can all fit in breasted 2 or 3 up, so there should be plenty of room for us. Participation is open to everyone who has a valid C&RT license, whether you've done it before, the more the merrier (especially after we all get to the bar!) I can't upload the files here, but email me on bcnschallenge@gmail.com and I'll send them out. Now I wonder who's going to be first to ask for a form? Sue
