  3. Wandering Vag seems to have had a crew, so leaving all the gates open, however annoyed he'd been by the people behind, just seems an expression of egotistical and deliberate obstructionism, as well, in fact, of giving a thoroughly bad example to the boat behind, who, having learnt from him, may well never close a gate behind them again. All in all, a totally unnecessary and stupid bit of unpleasantness, deliberately designed to spoil someone else's day,and almost certain to be counterproductive in the long run. What commercial boats did a hundred years ago is irrelevant. These days, due to lack of maintenance, leaks, low water levels etc, we need to shut lock gates. He's just taught some inexperienced person the opposite. Clot.

  16. I go to the launderette once every three weeks or so. I put the washing in then go for a pint. I then move the washing to the dryer. I then go for another pint. After collecting the dried washing I celebrate another successful laundry day by having a pint. I love laundry days !!

  19. I am sure the speed one drives at has a big effect as does the depth and breadth of the water you are on. I don't see how the consumption of a boat in one part of the system with one boater can give anything but a very general indication of the likely consumption of a different boat in a different part of the system with a different boater. I know increasing my cruising revs from about 1300 to 1500 over a week makes a significant difference. The 1 to 1.5 litres per hour seems a sensible sort of general figure to work from but the OP really needs to do their own calculation to be sure.

  34. I have a zanussi ZWC 1300W which cost about £350 but it's been a great little machine over the last 14 years. It draws 1600w max so I can run it from shore power or generator if I'm away. But it's a small machine - 3kg load. My neighbour just bought a new 6kg machine. I can't remember what it is but while it was on the bank side before we lifted it onto his boat I had a look at what it drew and I was quite surprised to see it was only 1800w, only marginally above mine but double the washing load capacity and it only cost £200. Things have definitely improved because 10 years ago that would have been a 2300w or even 2600w machine.

  39. Except for epoxy no paint is 100% waterproof so trapped/standing water will eventually do damage. Never had a big problem with the coiled ropes but bags of coal, even on rubber mats, will give trouble. I have a raddle roof and expect to make some repairs every spring. I put extra coats of paint on in the coal store area, and a good layer of polish, and this helps a lot, but there are still usually one or two little paint bubbles. ..............Dave

  43. Sorry I am slightly confused which is not uncommon at my age. Are you saying the only reason you close the gates and drop paddles when leaving the locks is because someone is following you and you consider that is helping them?

  46. We had one of the toy expensive types ONCE. We now always have full sized. Our present LG is fantastic at £700. The small amount of extra space needed to fit it is neither here nor there. Even a cheapo full size is a better bet than the little ones. They use less water per pound weight of washed clothes. Get the space altered and go for it.
