  6. So I decided to go off for a couple of weeks, first week on my own second with Jayne, so I had to be near a train station for Jayne to catch up with me. Friday night we went to Kilnhurst to empty moorings a couple of miles and 3 locks down river, it was easily achieved but disappointed to find the ship inn was closed when we got there so we had a carry on curry instead . Saturday we got up to heavy rain all day! Sunday more of the same, Jayne caught bus back to moorings then drove home, Monday some sun so went down to Pastures [its all canal to there] arrived at Mexborough low lock to empty moorings find river well into the red and Sprotborough lock [next lock down] was closed, had a chat with Stuart a lockie and was told it will be in the red for a couple of days. Wednesday water just in red so left it until 1 o clock and went with another boat, made the run to Doncaster in heavy rain all the way, just as I tied up to empty moorings a full scale thunderstorm erupted for 2 and a half hours!!! Thursday some sun so drive batteries were recharging from the solar, I decided that I would wait there for Jayne on Friday evening. Friday, sunny hooray late afternoon Jayne arrived and we went to Barnby Dun to empty moorings, had a very good Chinese carry on . Saturday set off late morning reasonably sunny day arrived at Thorne over 3 hours later and moored up with ease [this place is normally packed] Sunday day off Sister and Brother in law came for a BBQ. Monday set off late for Bramwith lock nice mooring with walks at the end Tuesday late set off after a longish walk with dogs, arrived in Doncaster to empty moorings late afternoon and went for a pint or two and a spot of dinner Wednesday Jayne went into Donny for her eyebrows to be plucked and just missed a drunk/druggie kill a 78 year old lady with his Range Rover sport and then drive off " src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png"> he was caught and is in deep dodah!!! we decided to go to Sprotborough and go for a good curry at the top of the hill, moorings nearly empty again!! Thursday back to the pastures very high headwinds all the way! Pastures moorings empty again! Friday we went to Kilnhurst cut end lovely mooring there so we stayed until Sunday had an easy time even though it was incredibly windy all the time, only a few boats moving and why they were in 50 MPH winds beats me Sunday swift run back to Rotherham leaving the batteries at 55% charged which is an ideal storage charge. At no point you will notice did we have a problem with range for out sort of cruising at all times the weather was the problem, yes we didnt go as far as we wanted but we didnt want to cruise in the rain very pointless to me as its all about enjoying yourself. Changes to be made, more solar, more batteries, and a better speed controller. The real problem though was the lack of boats boating for me the waterways were dead and the question is why?

  9. I'm not quite sure what all the drama is if you like it and it works for you use it - if you don't like it or don't understand it or for whatever reason it's not doing it for you don't use it.

  11. No he didn't. Jesus. It's almost as if you don't want cars to have a genuine 250 mile range so you can bang on about how bad change is. I genuinely despair for the country when so many people apparently hate change.

  12. A well known effect. I once managed to catapult my sister-in-law the length of the boat when the same happened in MIddlewich. Nowadays i always let the bow button ride up the gate - works fine. MP.

  15. So it seems. We now have articles in two "quality" papers about the dangers and injuries some cyclists are causing plus two more reports in NBW and first hand reports of idiot behaviour in this and other threads here. The question is do these reports show an ever increasing level of such cycling behaviour and if so can and should anything be done about it. this topic ask if cyclists should have compulsory insurance and indeed the responsible one who do not indulge in such behaviour probably do. Its the ones that cause problems that do not simply because they are by nature irresponsible. The majority of this type will simply ignore any such requirement unless there is a means of enforcement so the question is how can such a requirement be enforced. There is an exact parallel here with motorists and cars involving vehicle identity, the DVLA and NPR all working together. Try driving a car whilst uninsured or untaxed and sooner or later you will get caught and your car impounded and eventually scrapped. The same could apply to adult cyclists if the problem is thought to be serious enough. That is the question that needs addressing. It seems motorists and pedestrians who suffer the idiot behaviour fairly regularly think perhaps it should be. Cyclists want to carry on as they are because they do not think there is a problem or, more likely in my view, know there is a problem but do not want to address it. The two will never agree so it needs third party intervention with some research. I suspect it also depends to a large degree where you live/drive/cycle. I suspect that there is a much bigger problem in larger towns and on traffic free paths in the same areas.

  17. They will be a lot of use when there's no wind. The existing power stations won't be able to cope with demand. Would that be a diesel generator in the green shed ?

  18. It was the number of locations that has now surpassed that of petrol stations, not the number of devices or connections. I suspect the number of connectors is still well below the number of fuel pumps but it's catching up fast. There are also locations not included in Zap Map's figures. For example there is one at my marina. A lot of EV users will very rarely need to use public charge points as they will charge at home overnight at a time of (currently) low demand. And yes, I do know that millions won't be able to do this but there are millions who can so it won't be everyone using the public network, unlike filling stations. An EV would suit me perfectly but I doubt I'll get one for the foreseeable future, if ever, as they are still too expensive and demand currently far exceeds supply for the best ones.

  19. When we had the engine fire in harecastle we were jolly glad we had rcr membership. Okay we could have no doubt found someone to help but being in a poor signal area didn't make searching easy. Ok there was a bit of a delay which we probably noticed more as Iain's mum had a stroke and was in hospital and we wanted to get on our way but in view of what was involved the end result was acceptable

  20. Me neither. I don't regard membership as a way to save money but as a way to be sure I can easily get someone to come and help if I have a problem that leaves me stranded whenever and wherever that might be.

  21. Setting aside the shallow temptation to snipe at Peter's limited cruising range and only in good weather, what is most likely to happen is once ICE engines are banned in boats, the whole deal changes. Those like mrsmelly who want to cruise 28 hours a day, 400 days a year will see that boating isn't for them and sell up and buy a gypsy vardo, and those who are still interested will tailor their cruising plans to fit the capabilities of the boats of the day. Learning the new technical limits of boats and stretching them will become part-and-parcel of modern boating and those willing to get to grips with it will populate the canal system in the future, and hopefully be less miserable and negative bar stewards than the current bunch! The other idea of course, is to get a horse.

  22. In June 2019, Broad Street Bridge/ Tunnel in Birmingham was renamed BLACK SABBATH bridge, and this event coincides with an exhibition at the Museum. CRT in their wisdom have chosen to place a new information board linking this heavy metal band with the bridge. In a way if they had done their research properly they could have found a link with the Brass House that was adjacent to the original Broad Street bridge and a suitable link made, but then CRT is CRT and they seem to have no concept of their canal heritage. They have chosen to use one image from the Waterways Collection ref 972 0187 which according to their caption is Wimbolds Green. I have not heard of that location and would appreciate some enlightenment as to that caption. They show a canal side factory with a horse boat and the name Metal Closures. Now this firm was a West Bromwich firm that made stoppers etc and had their main factory in Bromford Lane. Their factory came down to the towpath north of Bromford Lane Bridge. The horse towing the boat from the direction of the basins that once served collieries and brickworks. I suppose the name Metal Closures is the best CRT could come up with, to link it with a heavy metal, but it is embarrassing that they have not used more thought. As there was a Church above the canal at this point they may have used divine inspiration, but that church was pulled down and the widened bridge is now left with a view of the modern canal scene that is Brindley Place, that was, in part, built on the old Brassworks site. Whilst brass is not a heavy metal as lead, it was still quite heavy and heavier than the products of Metal Closures

  23. You had better get cracking on a solution then because according to you a start if it doesn't solve the problem instantly is not worth anything. Just for your info not all electric power for EV's comes from burning fossil fuel and every day it is less and less.

  33. But it wouldnt be cheaper than a 25K tesla over 100k miles you work it out how much 12000 miles a year costs in fuel its scary then times it by ten add servicing and see how cheap a 25k tesla really is

  34. I often do 200 miles and more. Has anyone done a GENUINE test on one of these 200 mile range cars yet????? In january, freezing weather with rain? Heater on, blower on, HRW on, air con on to stop misting, headlights and wipers on full time?? Somehow I doubt it.

  37. What about it? I'm interested how that proves that when there's no wind... the existing power stations won't be able to cope with demand.

  39. Yes I do wonder if EVs are a blind alley. Technology has a habit of throwing up solutions to a problem that come from a totally different direction.

  42. Yes, it is. The term "silencer" is also a misnomer -- better ones are "attenuator" (but nobody will understand it) or "muffler" (which is American English, but at least it is accurate). A "hospital silencer" may well have dissipative materials (absorption) as well as the standard reactive section (like the silencer muffler on a car).

  44. 's funny because the whole tone of the postings by the non cyclists on this thread has the mindset,"We're better than these cyclists" hence the constant criticism of them, strikes me as the epitome of virtue signalling.

  46. I get the impression from here that many consider decreasing the number of cyclists to be a good thing, but cannot really understand why. If you reduce cyclists you are going to increase the numbers using cars = more congestion. A prime example is Bejing in China where most local trips up until 1990's were by cycle. The Chinese government, wishing to boost their auto industry, adopted a policy of reducing the number of cycles, wonderful! now the place is gridlocked by cars and no-one gets to go anywhere particularly quickly, clearly that is exactly what we want for this country. The general feeling that I get is that motorists, stuck in their ubiquitious traffic jams resent anyone being able to get through quicker than they are going to. A regular example of an utterly pointless exercise I experienced today whilst innocuously riding in a cycle lane towards a set of traffic lights. The lights turned to red on my approach and a small white van passed me and then pulled across into the cycle lane that I was in, blocking it. Was I bovvered? I just rode around him on his offside and then stopped for the lights immediately in front of him. Why he did that and what he was hoping to achieve, I have absolutely no idea. I don't doubt that some are going to come up with an explanation of this infantile behavior, but to be honest, I haven't that much interest in whatever the 'explanation' may be, I'll get on with getting to my destination (often quicker than the cars) and leave them to get to their destinations. Whenever driving cars I cannot say that I get as aerated about cyclists as many motorists seem to do, any more than I'd get aerated about pedestrians, horse riders, mobility scooters or anything else, they are just something on the road that you deal with.

  47. The ongoing £50m support from DEFRA relies on C&RT achieving certain KPI's. One of the measurements includes 'Public Awareness' of the brand - this has been falling below target. Another target is 'numbers of visitors' to the canals. If for an investment of £500k they can achieve their targets and retain the £50 million grant it has been money well spent. If they spent £500k on their museums and failed to achieve their targets , then they would lose the £50 million grant, and everything would be 'up for sale'.

  49. If the locks were open which from the saturday to Wednesday they wernt I would have gone further, but when they are in the red you venture at your peril!! As I said I dont want to boat in torrential rain, even if I do have a wheelhouse, wet big locks and climbing down ladders onto wet boats isnt safe
