  2. Roll on the day the CC laws are revamped , so its only those that actually truly CC, covering several waterways and hundreds of miles every year and are free to do so that are issued with CC licenses and all those that want to or need to stay in a specific area have no choice but to get a mooring. 5. Or they could just get a mooring like a lot of folk do if they need to stay in a particular area for work, schools etc. rather than trying to get special dispensation for CM ing or if that is out the question on grounds of cost , they clearly should decide if boating is a lifestyle choice they can afford. 8. Let the very, very few continuous cruisers with school age kids, remain around the school vicinity in term time, and cruise when not in term time. It would be entirely possible for such arrangements to be agreed, if there was a will. The suggestion that gazillions will join them is slightly ridiculous. It's good to see young families on the canals Rog

  11. Not necessarily, I think a lot of people could relate to aspects of what Ali is saying. Yes she has a very energetic writing style but she also sound very much like someone trying to find their feet in a (boating) world they don't yet full understanding. Ali has said she has said she has health issues and knows that there are situations she must protect herself from, this might make her concerns seem unusual to some people but doesn't necessarily make them unfounded. God knows the Scottish Highlands are full of people like Ali escaping the rat race. I'm a bit late to this party so I'm sorry if I've missed you. Welcome to the forum and I hope can find the answers you're looking for. Lot's of member have already given some really helpful and/or informative view point but I just wanted to pick up on this bit that I have quoted here. I don't know where you live or what your health issues are and I'm not asking you to tell, but if you have long term health issues then you should not be assessed as regularly as every 12-18 months, if you are then I strongly suggest talking to your doctor/consultant to get them to write a letter explaining the chronic nature of your illness. As for living in Social Housing and getting thrown out if they change the rules - No you really really can't - there are laws in place that prevent this happening, I can understand that this might be a deep rooted fear/insecurity but the reality is that you either have to behave VERY badly or refuse to pay your rent for a very long time before they will ask you to leave; I can understand your need to experience more freedom and have more control over your life but I strongly suggest not giving up your house, if nothing else get another camper van, at least for the time being, and just use the house as a base, houses make the best storage units / sheds / places to wash and dry clothes / keep food / get deliveries. ? If you like the sound of the Towpath Taskforce then you might also like the Green Gym, like the Towpath Taskforce a great place to get out and about with purpose and meet like minded people. https://www.tcv.org.uk The other thing I credit to helping my health issues is Michael Chaskalson's mindfulness in eight weeks. https://8weekmindfulness.com . Canals are a great place to practice mindfulness. Me too - For me being single is very much a lifestyle choice and I wouldn't have it any other way, and being an extreme introvert I'm never comfortable spending any length of time in a populated or built up areas. I see no reason why you can't make the lifestyle changes you want, though the jump from house to boat may be an expensive one, there are lots of people making a living from their boats, or it may be that you decide to keep your house and get a smaller boat, that way you always have a "Plan B" if you need one, best of all worlds. What ever you decide to do good luck and I hope you won't be a stranger to the forum.

  17. Unladen barges used to go straight over cromwell weir on occasion years ago on their way back up to Goole/Hull with the right amount of fresh. Ive been in that very position on the soar in abbey park at belgrave lock in a 72 footer I was skippering with 48 passengers when the drive sheered in flood. Two fire engines pulled me off. Very scarey.

  18. Use a thermostatic mixer valve set to 30 or 40°C to feed warm water from the calorifier into the cold water inlet on the washing machine and it shouldn't need to use its heater. Then there will be no need for the big inverter.

  20. Possibly the hardest bit is forcing yourself to put aside all you know about LA batts. Virtually none of it applies to Li, starting with cell voltage. 3.2V for Li not 2.1V. Other major diffs to take on board are never charge to 100%, never charge below 0c, never leave on float charge, partially charge as and when you like, they don’t care and don't don’t sulphate. Oh snd a Smartgauge doesnt work with them.

  25. In the 1920's plenty of people made homes out of old railway coaches. Seems that at Dungeness, the coaches came by rail and were then dragged over the gravel as far as they could. That was where your house stayed. Very nice, some of them - one was a Royal coach. Photo of Queen Victoria's carriage.

  26. The limit isn't distance from the school it is how far is the maximum a child should be walking to school. Our local town has pupils travelling 20 - 25 miles to school. Some at their parents expense because they have chosen a school outside their own catchment area. Personally I don't see why families with children should be given special consideration. Having children is a lifestyle choice just as where you choose to work. If you can be given special consideration for one life style choice why not another?

  31. I understand the idea to be that the LAs get the tail current from the full LFP battery, so you fast charge the lithium and bulk charge the LAs for an hour or 2. When you stop the engine, the lithium discharges into the lead acid bank for the next few hours, taking them up to fully charged.

  37. I’m inclined to say it doesn’t matter. (I’m not convinced received wisdom properly describes sulphation behaviour anyway. Batteries in my experience seem to degrade in noticeable steps. Fine for a while then suddenly not.). The Li batts in practice rarely discharge to the point the LA start contributing so they get used far less anyway, they still get recharged slowly and continuously when they do contribute and so what if they Do get sulphated? They will still perform their fuction as an alternator load dump.

  42. That's the way to treat tunnels. I was told that some of the GU boaters used to tie the tiller over so the boat rubbed on one side. Then went to make the tea. Saves getting wet in Blisworth. People seem to get worked up about tunnels - no different to boating at night. I have done the Oxford Summit at night - at least tunnels are reasonably straight.

  44. Yes, I wear a head torch in addition to the front headlight and it makes a big difference to judging the tunnel profile.

  48. A lot, I suspect, depends on where you are. A pattern like that on the Macc would take you from Stoke to Congleton, to Macclesfied, Bollington and up to Marple. You've not covered a huge mileage but it's certainly a cruise between several distinct places and you're not going to be annoying anyone by appearing to hog the best spots. The same sort of thing around London or Brum wouldn't even get you out of the city limits. Personally, I couldn't be bothered, but then I escaped from the South as soon as I could and loathe big towns. I never understood why anyone insists they can only live and work in London. Unadventurous, I call it. And they don't seem to be happy, them that hop round London (& elsewhere) avoiding CRT, judging by the amount of complaining about harassment that goes on and the whinging about the recording system "not being fit for the purpose".

  49. It does all seem to add a lot of stress to what is basically a low stress situation. I'd have thought not having to live in a constant state of worry that you might not have outwitted the authorities would be worth a couple of grand a year.
