  1. Butty’s on cross straps. The range is glowing with bread in the oven and a casserole on the hot plate. I may be fake boatman but I make a good boatman’s wife. JP

  3. Yes. We took out the 'lengthways' bed as it wasn't wide enough. Built a cross bed which was 6 foot wide (King size) and just over 6 foot long. If you lie 'straight' and are tall you may need to have a slight diagonal but I am 6 foot and managed fine - I am a 'side sleeper (with my knees bent) One of the best modifications we did to the boat. Folds up and away in seconds complete with mattress and quilt and you have the 'corridor' back.

  15. Aint it always the way, we want good weather for these things but the its to good. It wasnt easy painting this thing. When i get my next boat it will need no sanding or painting at all...ye i wish lol. I have been on a job today so next two days is finishing the hull. Will just crack on through it and get it done, pop the pills and a bottle wine aswell to keep me sane hey. BSS is booked for next weekend so fingers crossed, He is a good chap that is doing it, helpful and time for me. Sooo i thought i posted this but i started it the other day a sits a job i forgot i need to do. Will have this done aswell this weekend. Perspex base for non sticky Fits under cavitation plate. Slap some combo and resin around it. About 10mm worth Once set trim back roughly Rest to follow later ;):) I could of bought one ( but then that would not be me ) but saved about £40 for a few hours work.

  18. I think it was a lot more mundane than that, but the work had to be done. You'd be the first to complain if your council tax bill arrived with the wrong date on it, accompanied by a massive refund, I bet.

  20. We used the spare 'porta-potty' on the 'non-toilet' side. Any boatyard or 'chippy' should be able to do it - you'll need to think about the mattress as you'll need a new 'split' mattress in 2 pieces (2/3rds and 1/3rd) of the width of the boat (ie the length of the bed). Quite a few 'marine' custom mattress manufacturers advertise in the boaty-magazines.

  21. I don’t have a recommendation for a maker but bear in mind who sleeps which side, assuming you’re sharing your bed. If one of you visits the loo more in the night, you may need to swap the “headboard” end, so they can get out with climbing over the other person!

  22. Not quite the D+ provides a path to -ve when the alternator is not energised When alternator is energised and working the D+ is at 12v hence the light goes out Same voltage either side of the lamp.

  25. Nope. You’re looking for where it’s getting an earth when it shouldn’t. Getting 12V is correct, having the other side permanently connected to -ve isn’t.

  27. Does it have to be a canal, the Thames is very nice, its got the lot all in a relatively short distance, Towns (think Oxford, Henley, Marlow) pubs (expensive but good) and scenery (Goring gap, Cookham etc)

  29. There's a few marinas that do that, if it's not optional it should be part of the up front mooring fee. Marinas seem to be taking lessons from the hire boat business where the initial hire fee is just the starting point.

  30. I can't recall having gone into this much at all, let alone in detail. The legal distinction between 'licence' and 'registration certificate' yes – but VAT liability for either is a matter for the government and HMRC. The 'rules' on VAT applicable matters chop and change so frequently I cannot be bothered to keep up with them. CaRT have claimed in times past that the difference between them and the EA re boat licence VAT liability (they continue to misuse the word 'licence' for the EA registration certificates too), lies not in the nature of the product but in a specific and special dispensation granted to the EA but not to CaRT. Again, it would take time out of more pressing matters for me to delve into it, but I suspect that a lot of hogwash is promulgated on all sides and parties respecting this. The EA state that “VAT does not apply to charges for environmental permits and licences”, but certainly do “charge VAT on some of the optional services they offer”. I will leave it to you and others on this topic sorry Alan! It has been traversed under various themes here previously, e.g. -

  37. Shire are a good company to use, they actually take you through locks when you first start. They have 2 bases one at Sowerby Bridge, one at Barnoldswick (Barlick). The boats are good and well equipped. Also, its Yorkshire... So a win, win situation. I might be a little biased. ? 8HF
