  1. Butty’s on cross straps. The range is glowing with bread in the oven and a casserole on the hot plate. I may be fake boatman but I make a good boatman’s wife. JP

  3. Yes. We took out the 'lengthways' bed as it wasn't wide enough. Built a cross bed which was 6 foot wide (King size) and just over 6 foot long. If you lie 'straight' and are tall you may need to have a slight diagonal but I am 6 foot and managed fine - I am a 'side sleeper (with my knees bent) One of the best modifications we did to the boat. Folds up and away in seconds complete with mattress and quilt and you have the 'corridor' back.

  19. No idea. I have the small Vacuflush where the pump is part of the cradle which holds the cassette, these do not have duckbill valves. I assume you have the vacuum generator and a large tank?

  20. I think it was a lot more mundane than that, but the work had to be done. You'd be the first to complain if your council tax bill arrived with the wrong date on it, accompanied by a massive refund, I bet.

  23. Most northwich steel cabins never mind the crappy interior went years ago, mainly because the boatmen hated them. little risk of asbestos. i suspect though there is still asbestos board in some older conversions and fit outs. There certainly was in two of our old boats a few years ago

  28. Nope. You’re looking for where it’s getting an earth when it shouldn’t. Getting 12V is correct, having the other side permanently connected to -ve isn’t.

  30. Does it have to be a canal, the Thames is very nice, its got the lot all in a relatively short distance, Towns (think Oxford, Henley, Marlow) pubs (expensive but good) and scenery (Goring gap, Cookham etc)

  32. I can't recall having gone into this much at all, let alone in detail. The legal distinction between 'licence' and 'registration certificate' yes – but VAT liability for either is a matter for the government and HMRC. The 'rules' on VAT applicable matters chop and change so frequently I cannot be bothered to keep up with them. CaRT have claimed in times past that the difference between them and the EA re boat licence VAT liability (they continue to misuse the word 'licence' for the EA registration certificates too), lies not in the nature of the product but in a specific and special dispensation granted to the EA but not to CaRT. Again, it would take time out of more pressing matters for me to delve into it, but I suspect that a lot of hogwash is promulgated on all sides and parties respecting this. The EA state that “VAT does not apply to charges for environmental permits and licences”, but certainly do “charge VAT on some of the optional services they offer”. I will leave it to you and others on this topic sorry Alan! It has been traversed under various themes here previously, e.g. -

  33. British Waterways Act 1983 Section 4(1) “. . . . Provided that the charge payable for the registration of a pleasure boat shall not at any time exceed 60 per centum of the amount which would be payable to the Board for the licensing of such vessel on any inland waterway other than a river waterway . . .” Previous to this Act BW were bound by specific charges for pleasure boat registrations on the rivers, as laid down in the 1971 Act as amended. Once mandatory pleasure boat licences for the canals were introduced in the 1976 byelaws (pursuant to new powers granted under the BWA 1975), the 1983 Act allowed for flexibility and raising of prices for river registration certificates, but limited the amounts to the percentage of the equivalent licence, as quoted above.

  45. Not technically an answer to you question but best advice I can give you is get rid of it! ? Have a tonneu made instead have lived with our Pram hood for two years and I hate it... pain to put up, pain to take down... can’t travel with it up so they’re pointless IMHO. ours is only on in the winter in the marina and it’s taken off all summer I’m having a tonneu made this year and then the Pram hoods going in the bin! sorry for not actually being able to actually answer your question!

  49. I can only speak as I find. When the roving winter moorings were in place we chose Trentham for two winters with our car parked in the lay-by nearby. We had zero incidents over quite a few months, absolutely zilch. We took a mooring at the Black Prince marina one summer when I needed to work, not being over keen on marina life but constrained by my job to staying in a small area we spent a lot of time moored in various locations in and around the marina. Again no incidents. We also took a winter mooring at Westport Lake once they'd done away with the roving winter moorings - absolutely no problems at all. I'm very surprised to hear about two incidents, one serious here. It's outside Stoke in an affluent newbuild area. Are these first hand reports? Selfish cycling - endemic over the whole system - Birmingham was probably the scariest place for risking being mown down by the lycra brigade but the Leeds and Liverpool near Chorley was pretty grim as well. Same with motorcycles on the towpath. Trouble is if a motorcycle makes a nuisance of itself on the towpath in Braunston (where Carlt had his boat set on fire) they think lordy what an anomaly. If it happens in Stoke the think bloody Stoke - should have known not to moor here. Must tell everyone I know how horrible it is. My point being that I am very familiar with the area - after we sold the boat we bought a house in Burslem which we lived in for two years. It was my health and the need for family support that brought us back to Kent - I miss our Stokie friends. I'm sure people do have problems in Stoke, just as they do in many built up areas and occasionally in rural places but Stoke doesn't deserve it's dreadful reputation. Too much credence is given to second, third or more hand stories that have a huge element of Chinese whispers.

  50. Thanks for the input both and sorry for not responding sooner. Given that there doesn't seem to be anyone obviously to hand without paying travelling time I took a last look at it myself before biting the bullet. I thought the problem couldn't be air locks but over the last week or so I completely drained the system and refilled it using an antifreeze/inhibitor solution so that we can leave it commissioned when away over winter. This certainly did create air locks, and I bled them out from the towel rail. On retrying the eberspacher I found it now works fine, so I guess the problem must have been due to air in the system collecting in the heat exchanger. The smell of diesel has also largely dissipated so I'm hoping it was from spilt fuel being burned off the heater. I put a co alarm with a ppm read out into the bedroom just the other side of the bulkhead from the heater and it's showing no sign of fumes. The heater is now coming on faultlessly to the timer in the morning, and we wake up to a warm bedroom and hot towels. I know these pieces of kit get a bad rap, but right now I'm loving it. I think most of the problems come from using them for something they were never designed for ie 24/7 heating. For a quick burst to take of the chill they can be great.
