  13. As you know the area you want to live in and you have said that you don't want to move around much then something that you can do with out help or boat is go and explore. Living on a boat isn't just about the boat but also where the boat is, for example I love my local marina but I wouldn't want to live there. Take a drive to check out the local marinas and see what it's like to hang out at them, how long are their waiting lists what services do they provide, what boat yards are near where you can get work done when you need it. Walk along the canals local to your chosen area and see what it will be like to find parking for your can, how easy will it be to get to and from the supermarket and if you like you visit friends or have evenings out how safe/easy will getting home be. There are lots of fantastic things about boats and I love them but it can be the little things that put the kibosh on a good day. Getting out and about around the canals, especially in this good weather we're having will teach you so much more than you'll realise and help you for a picture in your mind about how your life could / would be if / when you decide to buy a boat.

  15. I had exactly the same experience on the BCN about seven years ago. Rang CaRT ( or more likely its predecessor) late in the afternoon, and within 15 mins a handcuff key was delivered. Wonderful service and no money accepted although offered. We have experienced nothing but superb assistance and service over the years from so many waterways personnel. We may have been lucky, but I prefer to think that it is the norm.

  19. The simple arch is easy to build, with difficulty arising more when the arch is not a simple semicircle. This first drawing comes from Meerwein's 1802 book on arches, and shows how he was looking at the failure of arches of various shapes. The second drawing shows that he was beginning to get to grips with the design of skew arches, something which would take a few more years to develop. The first skew arches had been built, with those dating from the late 1790s on the Naas of the Grand Canal in Ireland being the first in the UK, though they have not survived. The first in England could be that on the Rochdale Canal, though research is on-going on the subject. Mathematics in England was not really advanced enough for the technology to be fully understood before the 1830s.

  35. Not forgetting of course the GW railway bridge across the Thames at Maidenhead, the story of which most folk know. Built by Brunel in 1838, the flatest, gentlest curved arch in the world at the time, built like that because the Thames authority refused to have any supports planted in the fairway of the river. Thousands gathered to watch the centering knocked out expecting it to collapse, which of course it didn't.

  37. Take a look round Mercia marina if you want to be in Willington. It’s a full service marina with good WiFi coverage and they are now talking about running fibre broadband to the pontoon bollards. Big liveaboard community so lots of social events especially in the winter. http://www.merciamarina.co.uk/

  42. Somebody posted a reply to the OP of this thread but mistakenly posted it in the wrong thread unfortunately they had left and didn't realise what they had done. It was pointed out on the other thread but the OP of this thread didn't know so I posted the link so she could read what was actually meant for her. ETA the important bit - it was removed from the thread it was mistakenly posted in so there is in fact no link in existence now. Does that make sense...... it does in my head but that might not mean much in the real world
