  1. I just wanted to update everyone, after my surgery they told me that the cancer was limited to my bowels a type 2, it had not breached or spread to the lymph nodes (they removed 38 and no cancer cells), but there was concern about my lungs, a nodule had been noticed on the CT scan before the operation and afterwards on the post op CT scan it looked larger, a PET scan was ordered last week and yesterday I got the result, it is non cancerous, I am classed as at risk so every three months check up for the first year and blood tests every 2 months. Now I just need to deal with the loss and depression but at least my body isn't trying to kill me. So just recovering now.

  3. Well, I can see there are undoubted electrical supply advantages to having Lithium batteries aboard, but surely their biggest draw is that they're a fabulous opportunity for those in need of a new, all consuming hobby! I think you've probably also invented a new category of neglected wife - the Lithium battery widow!

  10. A can of spray is a useful aid to the gas locker to check the connection when a bottle is changed. A can lasts a long time, and is considerably cheaper than 13kg of propane. When did you last clean the mating face of your connecting hose?

  12. I think voltage settings very much depend on charge rate. Charging a 480ah bank with a 30A charger then not really surprising you are getting to higher state of charge at lower voltage. We charge our 320ah bank at 90-100A+ and that gets them to 80% charged by the time the voltage climbs to 14v. The cells certainly stay very well balanced up to the very end stages of charging to 100% when they can start to drift if pushed too hard. Don't know if this would occur if only charging at 13 8v or not, suspect it would if charging was continued. By only charging at 30a you're missing out on one of the big advantages of lithium and that is their ability to accept high charge rates - up to 240A with your setup! Agree about learning the correct voltage settings to use with experience. We had to vary ours a few times from my initial settings to get the best compromise between looking after the cells and avoiding false alarms. If only cycling them from 20-80% then from what I've read they should be good for 10000 cycles plus! I guess only (a very long!) time will tell how likely it is to get close to that figure. We do take ours to 100% every few weeks though to sync the BMV, but so far it seems to be staying in sync remarkably well. That's where I do like MP's setup with his arduino based BMS as I think he said it keeps track of any drift and self corrects.

  14. Ah well, finally bit the bullet and sold the boat! I worked out that it was going to take several years to complete the work, mooring fees, licence and insurance would end up being silly money for a boat I wasn't able to use. Sadly I had done an awful lot of the required work, but couldn't justify pouring more money into what was starting to look like an endless project. So....... with the money I'm not paying on mooring etc we're hiring a boat on the Norfolk Broads in October. Still going to be looking for a Highbridge Crusader for future purchase and use - so if you hear of one for sale please let me know.

  21. You might suggest it. In fact you just did! And on occasion, you’d probably be right to some extent. However I think that when I dish out I tend to include the reasoning behind my different view. I don’t just dish out insult in isolation for the sake of it.

  22. You got it! Mrs Bob wanted to get a puppy but we've now got these 4 cells. We are calling the first one Jeremy because under normal load he is the worst and lags behind every one. Usain is the second as he is streets ahead of the others. The third is Teresa as he just seems to follow the leader but a bit behind and the fourth, Boris, as he is up fighting with the rest during normal operation but totally disappears into the background when the charging gets high. A puppy would probably be less work.

  26. Webasto takes about 10 amps on start up for about 1 minute and then the fans and pump use about 2.7 amps whilst running. The pump itself uses 2 amps (I have a webasto pump on my heat exchanger system) and I doubt if you will find one with the flow rate under that. It is fussy on start up voltage though wilst it will run on 11.8 volts it needs 12.1 (at the controller board) on start up and the supplied loom is very long and not that thick.. My boat was installed with about 20 foot of loom folded up in trunking, shortening it to the correct length made a big difference to voltdrop on starting, from about 0.2 volts drop originally now less than 0.1

  28. **** WARNING ***** Get a look at a parts list or exploded view in the manual. The injectors fit into a sort of inverted top hat heat shield thing that is "loose" in the head but they often lift out on the injector nozzle. Make sure you take any that do that off. The nozzle sits on a sort of crimped flat washer thing in the hat shield (atomisation washer). this really should be replaced each time the injectors are removed. If you look down the injector hole and see a small land at the bottom of the hole and about a half inch hole in it the heat shield is missing. If the hole is less than 1/4 inch the heat shield and probably the atomisation washer are in place. Order of fitting down the hole in a bare head: 1. large diameter but thin section copper washer sitting on the land. 2. Heat shield. 3. Atomisation washer down the heat shield. 4. larger section copper washer around injector nozzle or down the hole sitting on top of the heat shield. Also remember to decarbonise the glow plug holes. I think it needs a 7/64" drill bit in a HAND drill. Q1 - When it is all back together bleeding the system will sort the injectors.

  30. We have a static-caravan park and were/are paying this levy, I spoke with our accountants who said we could pass it onto the 'domestic; users as it was part of the cost that we have to pay. (Noting of course that we cannot charge a higher price for electricity than we pay for it). If we didn't pass it on we would be 'selling' the electricity at a loss. We pay VAT at 20% on the commercial supplied electricity but can only recharge it out at the domestic 5% rate so we have to balance it out on our VAT returns (input & output VAT)

  31. How big is your battery bank at 80amps it won't last long, an hour or so at maximum before you are damaging your batteries. Most canal boat stoves are 5 kilowatts, most diesel heaters are 5 kilowatts the consensus being you need that much to heat a boat so 500 or 800 watts in a drop in the ocean. Try an electric blanket for a few minutes before getting into bed but spent the evening in the pub keeping warm.

  33. See previous post. From the highest levels within CRT - what is meant to happen..... Very clearly the chap that Nick has encountered is not adhering to the first of these, as he hasn't just "advised, guided and assist", but actually imposed his own rules about what he will let happen. In fact far from assisting he has impeded. It is correct to register a complaint about him, because either he is not adhering to what he should have been told in training, or he was trained incorrectly. For the safety of other boaters either possibility needs to be addressed. You seem to think he should be allowed to deviate from the rules and not challenged - I disagree.

  38. If we were meant to use one paddle, they would only fit one paddle. The only exception to that would be at times of water shortage where getting the paddles up at the next lock down, before fully opening the lock above, would avoid water going over the spillways. George

  44. Customer feedback is inherently 'a good thing' as it helps any organisation maintain process of continuous improvement. How a comment is phrased may well influence how it is responded to in the short term, especially if you give positive feedback when justified as well as the negative. Both are helpful. Overdoing it can lead to a marked ;lack of impact - look what happens if you make too many of the wrong sort of FOI requests . . . Such feedback is even more important in customer-facing services which, by their nature, are not directly supervised. How else is the org going to find out if ot is doing a good job?
