  1. Why? Let me explain. We have brought up two pups on Nightwatch from justseven weeks old. Both at sometime have taken a plunge. As they were pups you don't leave them unattended. They have an inbuilt survival instinct. My personal view is that buoyancy aids are/can be hindrance. Others will disagree I'm sure. We have seen many boats with lurched type dogs onboard. They get into small places and appear to be enjoying the lifestyle. To me it doesn't matter a jot whether a mansion, house or boat where the pups are brought up. It's down to the owners. As previous dog owners ten to one, they're be okay. It is sometimes better for a dog to be introduced to a life afloat from an early age than as an adult hound. we 'house' trained them with puppy mats many to start with then reducing them over time and moving them towards the 'exit' as time passed. Once they were allowed on terra firma lots of praise when duty is done ashore, and, not too much, a reprimand when an accident occurs. There WILL be accidents. Puppies love routine. Feed in the same place, at regulars times. Chewing can be a problem if they get a bit bored. (I know where to buy cheap phone charger cables), lots of toys, cardboard boxes etc. I will Post some photos. 1. First meal onboard. 2. Playtime. 3. Time for a kip.

  4. Yes they are terrible dogs these designer breeds! (Sydney the Schnoodle) As lovely as Sydney is we would not have paid the current silly prices (£700-1500) for what is a mongrel with a dodgy name. We were more than happy to rescue him from the terrible situation he had found himself in though.

  8. I’ve towed a few boats that I’ve found to be in trouble over the years....two were where RCR couldn’t be bothered & had left the owners...both of whom were members...to their own devices...both tows were much longer than RCR allow too!! No money changed hands....I work on the principle that it might be me needing a tow one day! I did get a rather nice Thai meal as a thank you tho!!

  12. Thank you both. I found this link on a previous thread that made me think, because it specifically mentions the Platinums and the Varta in the article. http://www.aandncaravanservices.co.uk/battery-technology.php I have just realised that this thread may have been better placed on the Equipment section. Mods, feel free to shift it over there please if so.

  13. If a burgler really wants to get into a boat he will and having bars across outside the doors advertises the fact that the boat is unoccupied and he will find another way in. Its a bit like having big padlocks on doors. Best to find a solution which increases security but doesn't advertised that the boat is unoccupied Haggis

  16. That's an understatement. Easy start is terrible stuff and damages engines and makes them harder to start in the future, requiring more easy start, causing more damage, requiring more easy start etc. etc. Easy start is highly volatile which starts the engine, but it also washes the lubricating oil off the cylinder walls thereby increasing wear of the piston rings & cylinders. This reduces the compression ratio of the engine due to leakage past the wear and makes the engine harder to start next time. Easy start is the mark of a cowboy.

  17. The booster's given by the vets vary. Our vet never used to give the one that covered Leptospirosis but where my daughter worked 3 miles away they did. Our vet has now started doing the one for Leptospirosis. So you need to ensure that what your vet does will give you the cover you want

  23. WhatsApp is owned by facebook - there is currently a big scandal going on in the 'background' regarding the usage of 'members' mobile phone numbers and several companies are using the phone number to track and locate their owners. There was a news report on this just yesterday. I view this whole 'social media' thing as a huge risk, and not something that should be used by anyone with any sense.

  25. Thanks for the heads up, I’m grateful, but I must point out that I only offer signwriting and traditional decorating services, not coach painting or blacking. I’m only a fancy painter! One yard I work with has another Dave there, he’s “ Big brush “ while I’m only the “ little brush” version.

  27. This is the truth of it. I fail to understand why anyone these days sticks with 12 volt. Problem is I suppose many people dont have extensive experience of continuous liveabord useage and have not kept up with the times. Yes twenty years ago when the new 12volt stuff was coming inand replaced the early 12 volt stuff it was a better way than mains but with the huge improvements with inverters and mains equipment recently the facts are as born out by my and others full time use 24/7 365 that 12 volt is no longer the way to go.

  33. However I think I’m right in saying that if you have a flight of locks, and one lock somewhere in the middle has side ponds, you don’t actually save any water? A lockfull still comes down from above and if you don’t use all of it (due to using the side pond) it will just run over the bywash. Side ponds only save water when all locks in the flight have them.

  37. Most dogs do just fine on boats. If brought up on the boat from a pup I really cant see a problem they will soon get used to the lifestyle.

  45. Whilst you were suffering an excess of wind on Sunday we spent most of the day awaiting enough wind for a start of the last race of the annual Classic Yacht regatta in Auckand. A bi annual trans tasman event, alternating between Melbourne early November, and Auckland, Early March. For this regatta we had a record six starters for the A class (greater the 50ft on deck) Gaff Rigged Yachts. More restorations are though enlarging the fleet I was crewing on the oldest, and biggest the 58ft 1894 built Waitangi The youngest was the 1905 built Rawhiti that was a crack Sydney boat up to WW2, The fastest the 1904 built 58ft Ariki was the crack Auckland yacht until eclipsed by Ranger in 1938. Ranger was built and raced by two watersider brothers who bought two adjacent wooden houses in a run down inner city suburb. They lived in one and demolished the other to provide both the boat building space and the timber for her construction. She was the crack New Zealand keeler until 1966, and was racing too but in the modern rig class. Above the door at the prize giving is the oldest internationally contested sporting trophy in the world. One that we are pleased to welcome your frighteningly competent and well resourced team to try and wrest from us in 2011. As well as the America's Cup some J class Mega Racing yachts will hold a series, and some veteran classic yachts will be over from Australia. It will be quite an event spreading over quite a period. (Actually I think that may be a replica cup, the real one may be in a more secure location but in the same building) .

  48. Since I had new wooden window reveals fitted in 2014 I use Barbour Thornproof Wax Dressing. They still look like new as the condensation just forms beads on the frame and does not penetrate the wood. I apply twice a year with a lint free cloth.
