  4. The devices they intend customers to charge will be tablest and phones - conceivably laptops. If I were a Costa manager I'd think you were taking the piss more than a little -- and it's quite arguable that what you are contemplating is theft. pure and simple. It only takes a few "customers" with flexible morals to bugger it up for the great majority.

  8. Now then, which part of the widebeam Oxford canal were you considering with your 12' wide monster boat? You would not be popular or able to move very far.

  14. First heard ‘snicket’ last year in Sowerby Bridge. I didn’t understand so they said ‘ginnel’. Took me awhile to get what they were on about. In Cornwall I’ve heard them called ’opies’.

  30. I'm not sure about some of the additives, a layer of watery crud at the bottom is one thing but emulsified fuel in the tank might be a bigger problem. First time we went down the Thames years ago in a narrowboat with a separate steel water tank the filth that came out the tap was horrible and that was because of it being stirred up by the more interesting movement on the river. Fuel was fine but I think a boat that had been used on the canal and then went somewhere more adventurous might get into trouble. Maybe a tee piece in the fuel line with a bit of plastic tube so you could poke it into a container full of clean fuel would be wise and the same with the return pipe? Never mind the BSS, it wouldn't matter if you meant to get to Portishead and were being carried past Ilfracombe.

  34. But the OP made himself look a bit foolish by stating he was looking for a wide beam mooring around Middlesex or on the Oxford canal for a wide beam. He also said "down South". I felt Sam's reply was light touch of humour aimed at a bit of an ill thought out question. I can not help with a reply but I know Thames and Kennet marina in Reading accept wide beams and livaboards and I have seen livaboards on the K&A (non-CaRT I think) moorings below Burgfield Island on the offside but I suspect he will not like the T&K prices. If he wants to be around Oxford in a widebeam he needs to look at Thames moorings.

  39. This may sound a bit extreme at first, but you could get a panel made to fit the quality switches. There are a lot of little companies around that do engraving for industrial switch panels and for commercial signs. I've had a couple of aluminium panels made for friends boats to replace old and scratched control panels. They have a brushed aluminium finish, with blue infilled engraved text, including the boat name. Very neat. One day I'll do one for my own boat! I produced drawings for the panel makers, but some could do it from a sketch of the panel with legends and the sizes of cut outs for switches and breakers. Some piccies of one of them. Much bigger and more complex than you need. Jen

  41. Having been fascinated by this thread and other recent threads on the same subject it would appear to me that the advantages of 24v are insufficient to persuade me to ever contemplate going down the 24v route. Phil

  43. I make sure to paint anything made of copper ,brass ,bronze or ally, with either red oxide or mica black...........The marine thieves round here come with chainsaws on the off chance of a brass porthole or hatch fitting, and the glint of polished metal is a magnet .

  46. What a narrow-minded (pun intended) bunch you all are. It is a houseboat - there are plenty of them. In fact many folk seem to want a houseboat but instead buy a knackered narrowboat that will never move again. It doesn't pretend to be anything else. At least it's honest and would make a lovely home compared to some of the floating skips found around the system.

  48. I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind going from the upper Parting down to Gloucester lock on a raft without a great deal of preparation, CRT approval and a safety boat or two. In fact I would be quite surprised if Tewkesbury Upper Lode lockie will let an unannounced raft in to the lock, let alone out again. The potential reputational risk to both navigation authorities is high and they (having real money) are prime lawyer targets in the event that something goes awry on their patch. It may be that the OP has already contacted both ANT and CRT to sort out their requirements and get approvals, registration or licence waivers etc., but the post does not read as if that is the case. Lots of planning needed IMHO. N
