  2. Just another example of a small (but increasing) number of newcomers to our waterways arriving for all the wrong reasons mucking it up for the rest of us - nothing will be done except they will tell their like minded mates how great it is and the mooring will end up overpopulated by breasting up - they will end up being kicked off and will move on with a huge chip on their shoulders about their "rights" being ignored and cause problems elsewhere...…………..

  15. When we had our galley refurbed, I wanted to keep some of the kitchen 'environment' from the rest of the boat, and to stop splashes going onto the upholstery. The 'half' glass petition will also (hopefully) help contain any fire from the hob which is about 9" from the glass. It's set in two grooves (on the left and bottom), and can be lifted easily out. The left piece of wood is shaped to the tumblehome so the glass could be cut straight. We ordered the tinted 4mm toughed glass cut to size, and it came finished with the edges bevelled and polished, it was just under £105 delivered. Glass website https://www.glasstops.co.uk/

  16. I know you have already said that you are proposing starting from Rugby, but I want to check again that you get that Rugby and Warwick are not on the Avon ring. Even though on a map you will see that the river Avon does go through Rugby and Warwick it is not navigable there. You will be using the North Oxford canal from Rugby to Braunston and then the Grand Union canal to Kingswood junction, there you will join the Stratford canal which forms part of the Avon ring. The Avon ring its self is 131 locks and your trip from Rugby to Kingswood will be 49 locks each way. So your trip will be a total of 229 locks.

  29. This para frankly makes it sound like you are treating your 12 yo as if she was 6. No reason to keep her off the bow at all times, just (maybe) not to get off from the bow until the boat is alongside. No reason not to get off from the stern as long as it is reasonably close to the side. As a matter of fact, on our trad sterns, we always drop the crew from the bow. In 14 years there’s been a couple of accidents when the person tripped and fell onto the towpath, no serious injuries. Absolute safety does not exist, you have to let your kids take risks else how are they to learn? As regards footwear, it depends on the weather and the state of the towpath, but boots or decent walking shoes with tread on the sole are more often appropriate rather than sneakers/trainers. Re-reading this makes me realise I’m sounding censorious, sorry about that, but I do worry how you’re going to cope with an adolescent girl if you want to keep her bundled in cotton wool at this late stage in her development. Try to worry less about this trip, I’m sure it will be just fine.

  30. While walking the dog just now I saw a tree down by bridge 86a. It completely blocks the canal & part of the towpath. There is currently one boat waiting for it to be cleared.

  37. If you make too many rules and restrictions your daughter will not enjoy herself. You sound like sensible people so it's likely your daughter is sensible too! - a lifejacket is a given, but let her use her common sense to decide for herself what is safe and what isn't, and let her help with anything she wants - most kids work out very quickly what needs doing and the best way to do it. She will be proud of her achievements and you will be proud of her, too. I understand the attraction of a Ring, but be aware that unless you have a burning desire to boat the Avon/Severn, you can see the Shakespeare properties, Stratford and Warwick and plenty else besides without leaving the canal system. In fact you could do both a ring and a trip to Stratford (Warwickshire Ring with a side trip down the South Stratford from Lapworth) easily in 3 weeks. Recommend Canalplan for checking out this and other possibilities. Enjoy your trip!

  39. I think.. The idea is someone asks a question, various peeps answer that question but as is often the case the answers can vary, so people then vote up the best/most accurate answer in a way to weed out the odd Muppet answers. I think the most voted answer then moves up the listing So it's really for specific "what's the best" type questions rather than hints/tips and general type questions But I could be wrong I'm just a tree monkey

  44. You're asking because you want to know why everything in this sub-forum is a question. I don't know that, but I have at least answered the question in the topic title, and hope that helps. I've tried asking pets and animals questions, but never yet got an answer out of them. I have a theory that they are all unable to speak.

  47. Brings back memories of helping my mate move his "Star class" from Oxford to Chester Arrive at Tyrley Top & hover by the winding hole as there was a boat in #2 lock & the top lock was in his favor. Shiney boat moored in winding hole fore end towards Drayton female exits cabin to well deck reaches up & takes short shaft from cabin top at the same time inquiring of me with many expletives what I thought I was doing ?"Waiting for a boat to come up the lock I replied" with many more expletives I was told I was breaking canal bye laws if waiting for the lock I was REQUIRED to tie on the lock approach & not f***about in the middle of the cut this was as the water was moving with lock working I was froing & tooing about 1/2 a boats length with gear engagement but not raising the revs above tick over At that time there was a notice board with a selection of bye laws & do's dont's by the top lock & nowhere did it say you had to tie up When this was pointed out I was told I'd be reported to BWAt that moment a BW van with Jack Whalley Norbury foreman & Reg the Norbury chippie arrived she launched into a tirade about /a gainst me, Jack listened without saying a word for what seemed minutes & then said "is that it " she said it was & what was he going to do about it His reply was "Well first you are going to move as you are not allowed to moor in a winding hole " by this time I was going down in the lock so never found out the outcome but in terms of "Master Card "advert the look on her face "Priceless"

  48. What is now the bow is what waterways put on as a butty stern based on the river class back end? The bow was later cut off and squared off you can see the bow last parts of the guards and in the photos you can see the turn in of the bow plates. You can also see the stern sideways t stud has been retained for the bow

  49. In 2012 a group of business men with no experience decided to take over the running of a 200 year old waterways system without any understanding of what was needed to keep it 'open'.
