  27. Thank you for all your advice. I got as far as Smethwick locks before dusk. Someone had gone before me on the Old Main Line but the ice had begun to freeze again. It was half an inch thick for much of the route, but not too bad. If the temperature doesn't drop too much tonight I should be OK for Farmers Bridge flight tomorrow. Thank you for the alternative route suggestion if I miss it. This forum has come up trumps again.

  28. It's actually easier to use a well set up wheel to change the gears than a mechanical push pull. For a start it is always in the same place when you reach for it. A push-pull can necessitate groping around under the slde, as it may be well out of view, (and in some set ups very hard to reach). The wheel often only needs a small movement clockwise or anticlockwise to engage or disengage a gear. On "Sickle" it is only about 1/4 turn eah way, though on a Brunton or Parson's box it is likely to be a bit more, from memory.

  32. Not a narrowboat but certainly historic, “Jumbo” a boat I’ve admired for years. Described as a 1923 gentleman’s yacht, she’s moored on the 5 mile pound above Beeston lock on the Trent. What really interested me though was the engine. 1944 Coventry Diesel, 4 cylinder, 2 stroke supercharged! Luckily it comes with a spare engine.

  40. I wish to defend Haza. Although I couldn't understand the scam, it is possible what Haza wrote in the OP made sense to her. Perhaps she is dyslexic.

  41. You don't actually need a boatyard, only somewhere where a lorry annd crane can get to the edge of the canal. Talk to the boat movers and they may well know of suitable locations.

  45. Not only that but the same canal would gain a widely varying score on different stretches even if scored by the same person. How could you score the Coventry? Seriously urban and no locks, followed by semi-rural with locks, followed by mostly rural with no locks. It's not one you'll regularly see folks recommending but it's got plenty to commend it. We should be championing waterways for what they offer not potentially ranking them as inferior on a very shaky basis. JP

  46. I don't think it could be quite subjective, I'd suspect it would be totally subjective. On a recent thread entitled "Great Canal Journeys" a week ago, I said …….. One of the greatest canal journeys I enjoyed was The BCN Main Line on a warm balmy day outside of school holidays. One of the worst was Shropshire Union Woodseaves cutting, during school holidays and coinciding with a fishing match. Also we all have our own special and magical places, night stops, towns and villages where we love to stay a few days. I doubt I'm alone in admitting that I never share them with anyone as the last thing I want is for the world and his Aunty to turn up. We've all had to find our own favourites, I'm not suggesting you should go and find your own. I am saying you'll miss out on a lot of fun and delight discovering them yourself though. I think that all of your questions listed above are answered in any published guide. When I started boating mid 60s all we had was a map which only showed the approximate location of locks. Which is why your suggestion is not for me either, however best of luck if that's what you need.

  49. I think the idea of calling it "Human Resources" rather than "Personnel" was basically to enable management to treat people n the same way they would treat other required stuff, like tables and chairs. It depersonalises the process, thus making it easier to treat people as things rather than people. Which is why almost all modern personnel management is appalling, and why, in general , the human resources despise and detest their owners. It explains why zero hours contracts have become acceptable, why benefit sanctioning for ludicrous reasons is acceptable etc etc. When people have no more value to you than a filing cabinet, and sometimes less, that's when you have a human resource. Just thought I'd mention it.
