  4. No No No. There are sharks in the water up here, and bandits on the towpath. It's grim up north, so you are much better sticking with the Cheshire ring or points south. Ignore @dmr with his tales of it being like the K&A but friendlier people and better, cheaper beer. And many choices of places to moor, and shower blocks at the services, and some of the best canal scenery in the country. (Not like we try and dissuade people from hogging our chunk of the canal network )

  6. I have not posted in this thread, I have no horse in the race, don't know Peter, don't really care and in any case, it's none of my business. I am currently having a new bathroom installed in my boat and if the yard had suggested that plasterboard be used they would not have got the work. Not because I have first hand (or even anecdotal) experience of its use on boats, but because of my opinion that it obviously will not work in the long term. Rather like the famous chocolate teapot - few of its denigrators have actual experience of using one but opinion is fairly unanimous. Peter, it is difficult in a big pressure situation - you have the board, not using it means not only the cost of 'wasting' it but the cost and inconvenience of getting it off the boat - but reading your posts, I wouldn't have thought that untried (and honestly, bizarre) innovation was your thing. On balance would it not be safer to go the traditional way rather than search for almost certainly non-existent evidence that a new method will work? Just saying.

  8. I was going to have a rant about people who criticise the boat Safety Scheme, but f*@k it, I can’t be arsed. If your not happy with the way your inspection went, and at the end of the day it’s your safety, then phone the Bss office. Had a phone call from a boater last night asking about ventilation on a friends boat, and how his friend had removed battery from CO alarm because it keeps going off. Im now at my expense driving up to this boat to find out wtf is going on before somebody dies.

  23. Sorry to be negative but basically its gypsum plaster board. I would not use it anywhere on a boat, water or fire resistance does not make it a suitable material for an environment where there is shock loadings and vibration. Ultimately it will return to dust retained by 2 layers of paper.

  25. I’d suggest when you come to replace the fuse holder you avoid any blade type and look for a heavy duty type like a midi fuse holder (google or search on eBay). My charger is only a 20A model and I was amazed how hot the blade type holder got (good quality well installed) replaced them with midi types and no problem

  29. Dd i get your hopes up for something exciting Tony, sorry lol. Well this week, First off got a mooring all sorted and paid for as of today Found it last week and finalised it today. It on the Lancaster a Cabus Nook. Cheap as chips and as i like them. Quiet. Work on the boat, well i got a xmas pressie just in time to make this job easier, no pics as it is boring, it is a Makita Multi tool. that could be the last tool i need ( who am i trying to kid )but for a mobile table saw maybe. I have trimmed back the edges of the ply lining ready to be plined out so just now needs a quick sand over and get rid of all the dust to do so. First though it will be varnished inside. I fettled the canopy frame so its good to go, well the welds need to be neatened up a bit , Still not easy to Tig weld with bad fingers and elbows, now the welding mas is on its way out. I made a few Iroko risers for the front canopy mounts but these will be replaced with either SS or Ally when i get around to it. Its not a priority to launch. So when folded down the frame all lies down level. Also i moved the riser mount further back so this gives a better access to get on and off the boat. Now you see this area, i have made and yet to fit in place once i get the weather. 90 deg angles to get a better contact for the canopy to fit to instead of the steep angle for the turn button to attach on to. I got a length of 65mm square down pipe and used that as a mould. I used some basting tape that arrived for making the canopy ( fine double sided tape ) and used tinfoil for releasing. Blending combo matting together as using off cuts, feather edges to get a more level finish. Can barley see the join That job a said will be done soon enough, but asap as i need it done for the canopy patterns to be made. And as we speak look what arrived at last :):) 8m of Top Gun canvas and windows with size 10 zips, and 1oz 450m of V69 thread. So time to practice my sewing on this. Will be `trying` to make a canopy for this with cheaper but same weight canvas. I knocked up this frame up Friday morning. Now i wish i didnt, but doing corners are a pain in the arse to sew but atleast there will not be any on the boat canopy. 20mm SHS 1.6 wall and a dozen slits and it bent just nice. And there we go, one thing, well another, i should of painted it first but weather was against me. Darn masking tape would not stick to well to the rusty frame so when i went to amend the pattern the masking tape come away with the basting tape on the pattern material. So 25mm masking tape then 10mm basting tape. etc etc All that was easy enough to do, And would of been easier if i didnt rush it and think more of how i wanted the thing to be finished. As in hems and joins and wot not. Sooooo my sewing. Its ok could do neater lock stitch`s but this is the first panel, and ok the corners are a mess here. Enjoying it though. This cheap canvas at £6pm towards the Top Gun at £25pm, no way am i going to waste that on this practice. I am over the moon with the sewing machine, easy to set up and use and can do seven layers of this canvas with ease, front trailer cover panel done. The rear will have a zipped door roll up type. Atleast these corners will not be seen, but then the top and sides will need to be better as these will come around the corners to overlap these. Piggin nora...why did i do a radius I have done a few more small jobs like faff with the engine lid and look for materials for this and that. All boat related stuff is a step ahead. Captain Faffer :):)

  30. Ooohh, yes! I'd forgotten about the drains. The OP would certainly find those quiet. I went down to them with another boat, became separated after half an hour, and never saw it again. You've got to watch out for this sort of thing, though (West Fen Drain). Yes, that's an Ordnance Survey map - not much in the way of guides!

  31. Just a thought, but might this be a similar issue to one of our dogs being absolutey scared of going near or traveling in our car.( so how would we get to the boat?) He would always leave the house and pull over to the other side of the garden furthest away from the car whenever we went out for a walk. It 's sorted out now and he travels fine any where car, boat or train..... It was in someways the weirdest thing we have had to deal with in all our rescued dogs, but really the most rewarding. The approach known as "systematic desensitisation"; is to subject the patient(dog) is to increasing periods of the stressor for periods shorter than that which would take it to be upset. {Its a completely benign technique, rather than the Woodhouse "flooding method" and is supposed to be longer lasting!} Right. I'll try to explain the practicalities. We first just sat in the car, in a closed garden, with the doors open and read the paper/ had a cup of coffee so the dog could wander around suit himself, eventually he became comfortable getting into the car.... Then the interesting bit comes we had to gradually increase the time we ran the the engine/ moved the car; but by amounts so small that he didn't notice and on NO ACCOUNT LET HIM GET DISTURBED. In this case we could only manage increases of 30seconds each time or so but GRADUALLY to get to half an hour; at which point the issue was resolved!!! --- I don't know why the turning point is reckoned as half an hour but that is the "magic" time. I hope that makes sense, please ask if I can help more, I have cut the details rather short keep the post manageable. I do hope you can get your pet happy on the boat . John

  35. I am so grateful, it’s because I want things to be 100% right, re the one, two battery’s letting the gas out, getting the vanner installed to correct the 12v 24v charging problem and trying to sort out battery bank yes im getting confused with the battery’s, ive now numbered them, can’t beleive how the voltages are different every time I go down in the engine bilge!! knowing this equalzation is so expensive thinking I fit it must be a good thing? then you bring up a little converter that could do the same jobs re our 12v supply!! didnt expect the battery venting the gasses, would be so confusing to fix. Col. And a Thankyou to you Alan, Tony and everyone that has spent your time trying to get this right. i just hope this post will be helpfull to many people. and the main question the Vanner equalisation unit, with all what is does, why would people use and buy this??

  41. I agree. Extending the time from 250 to 400 hrs is ok now and again and wont adversely affect the engine but you should normally do it every 250 hrs. It takes less than 30 mins to change the oil so you can easily do it when out and about, a hour or two after you finish your daily cruise so the oil is nice and warm. It is soooooooo easy to do. Even a muppet can do it.
