  1. Dunno if it's true, but I heard that many years ago, a radio programme had an interview with a Romany family, about their way of life. They told the mother that as the Romany custom of cooking hedgehog by the ball of clay method was a well-known thing, they couldn't really avoid asking her about it, but they wouldn't ask her anything about catching or killing the hedgehog, or the actual cooking, to avoid lots of complaints from animal lovers. Ands she wasn't to talk about these aspects in her answers. The interview went on something like this: "I'm sure a lot of our listeners will have heard stories about Romany people eating hedgehogs. Is it true?" "Oh, yes, quite true." "Have you ever eaten hedgehog meat?" "I have, yes, but not for many years now. It's something that goes back to the Old Days. It's not done as often as it used to be." "What does it taste like?" "Difficult to say. It's a bit like cat." The switchboard went into meltdown.

  16. Saw a couple of gravel barges this year near Strasbourg, ordinary peniches, a bit battered, doing a shuttle from a quarry to a concrete plant and back. probably carrying a couple of hundred tons or so per trip but they were fitted with conveyor belts over the bow so when they arrived at the plant they just plugged into the electric and the boat unloaded itself into a hopper and then belts took it off to the plant , I guess they had hopper shaped holds as well. Clever though.

  23. Worth trying, but wouldn't be so sure. My guess is it would spend a long time in bulk, and therefore a long time in absorption. Sounds like an interesting project. Could make a useful upgrade in the future, so if you don't mind sharing that would be great. Still way out of my depth, but a good learning experience for me! The problem with voltage based soc is how flat the discharge curve is. Be interesting to see how this works out. On our setup, we found the Victron BMV ah counter would drift if charge efficiency factor was set to 99% and give slightly high soc readings after several weeks, however with CEF set to 98% we have slightly low readings after a few weeks. That's one reason for us charging to 100% every 6 weeks or so - to re-synchronise the bmv. I'm glad we got ours when we did now! From memory it was only around $100 including shipping. Something like this could work quite well for lithium/lead hybrid installs. Set to isolate the lithium bank at 14v, and have it sensing from the lead acid. That way loads would still be provided by alternator whilst engine running, and the lithiums would take over when engine stopped as voltage would then drop below 14v. No discharge of the lead acid, and depending on alternator output vs lithium bank size, cuts charging around 80%. This setup, with a similar low voltage disconnect set to say 12.8, and cell monitoring with alarms such as ISDT BC-8S that we've used, could make for a fairly cheep but safe lithium install @Dr Bob. 28. I mostly had relatively long hair (and a good crop), but after losing it in handfuls it was quite interesting to see it get to about 10mm when it regrew. Several people said the shorter cut suited me and even the magic words "makes you look younger", so I keep it between 12 -15mm now, and trim it every two or three weeks. Saved me a fortune in shampoo as well and it doen't matter if i forget to brush it in the morning.

  36. As above ^^^ . I have not long got back from a great cruise over Xmas/ New Year down to Ely and Cam and took the opportunity to have a sedate meander round the Lodes. Last year I got well caught out and stuck between St Neots and Offord lock for a couple of weeks when the River came up somewhat rapidly after some heavy rain on Boxing Day (it wasnt even on caution when I left). All part of the fun of winter River boating-winter is a great time to get about-LOADS of moorings ?

  39. I bet its quite a big difference. On our original JD3 the blowby was so huge that if I took the dipstick out a huge oil spray came out of the dipstick hole. Many years ago a friend got his first car and was told that he needed to check and top up the oil. He phoned me and asked if it was normal to have to put in a huge amount of oil....he had topped it up right to the top of the rocker cover ? ..............Dave

  41. You could always fit a TinyTach. That way you don’t have to worry about pulley ratios or W connections. https://www.tinytach.com/diesel-tinytach And this is the UK distributor http://www.tinytachuk.com/diesel.php
