  2. Just got back to the boat with Syd. He is acting a bit out of sorts but I'm sure he will be back to his usual self in a couple of days. He had really settled in with Pierres and Helen. Guess he had assumed that we had given up on him like his previous three sets of owners. He was very excited to see us again when we walked through the door. Think he has tired himself out now as he is fast asleep on my knee.

  4. Blimey, we used to see a lot of posts on the forum complaining about people running their engines or generators outside of the permitted 8am - 8pm time limits. Now it seems they're complaining about people doing it within the permitted times. What's changed? We've become a bunch of snowflakes.

  11. My wife usually buys Zeus a squeaky ball every time she does the weekly shopping. He does the same, nose in each bag until he finds his new ball, completely ignoring the Sunday joint ?

  12. Sydney has yet to ruin a toy or pull a squeaker out. Which is proving to be a problem in itself. He has had to get a toy box at home he has so many toys. People keep buying them for him!

  13. I'm of the opinion that many who have taken on a boat as an affordable residence just assume they can leave junk outside and it will just disappear, as it often does when placed outside of a house. When we had a mooring near Uxbridge the local council progressively removed bins that were close to the canal, due to boaters piling heaps of bin bags and other junk around them.

  14. Terminology is not quite correct just because some one Owns or Rents a Boat does not Qualify them as a Boater ,Having lived aboard for 45 Years I know hundreds of Boaters and none of them would consider dumping Litter as this Rodney has done.

  15. There are simply more and more of these Project Boats which in its self is fair enough but this Dumping of Boaters Rubbish really annoys me , what self respecting boater would want to be associated with that sort of behaviour and what sort of Boater thinks thats permissible . I suppose some would say well he isn't a Boater , he is simply availing himself of cheap accommodation but even this sort of Boater in my experience abhors this sort of behaviour . Put it down to experience and move on i suppose though i may give this Lisa Jarvis another Phone before I depart the Location on Monday

  23. Started to repaint the Gardner engine in situ - not easy. The old Walsh paint always seems to fail hence new Paragon Paints Gardner Grey high temp specialist paint. Before - To scrape off old failed/disbonded and degrease and after (lots more work to do)

  24. Not living like a caveman comes to mind. As a liveaboard I fully expect people who live in houses to use electricity and I also fully expect them to understand that I will be using it. My battery bank is charged every day whatever the useage to keep the batteries in reasonable condition, much of this is often but not always done between six and 8 pm because suprise suprise I tend to put charging on when batteries need it rather than when they are full and can alos have travel power running for other chores, this leaves batteries full or nearly at 8pm. On vms I am afraid engine running is inevitable. My engine with hospital silencer is very quiet as with most unless its some old knacker from the 1930s.

  26. We hired an electric day boat in Norfolk earlier this year. It wasn't quite the silent experience we had expected as there was a lot of noise from the drive train. These were far from new boats and have been in service for many years.

  27. They will work on an instantaneous gas heater provided that they pass enough hot water to keep the burner going. The problem with the small heaters like Palomas etc. is that they are not true modulating burners. Its all or nothing.

  38. Then there was a load of rubbish about canals on Mars, someone mentioned Spam and someone wanted to find the nearest canal to them in Somerset. ....eta, Mr Smelly must have given out his location in the midlands as it is pouring down for the first time ever this morning.

  39. Why a PM. Is it a secret on how to fix a puncture in an inflatable? Quite a few of us have inflatable crafts and this is supposed to be a help forum. If you PM someone with a fix then it might be better if you shared that fix with the rest of the forum.

  41. I often have a bit of a chuckle at some of these Webasto threads. The Webasto TTC only runs at a maximum of 72 degrees Centigrade, the ignition point of even pine is 180, we mount them on wood all the time without issues, this low temperature is one of the reasons they don't work well with blower boxes, the new replacement model (Eco 5.0) runs ten degrees hotter to enable them to use hot air blowers too. If you are concerned (which you really needn't be) then use slightly longer screws on the H bracket, another method is to mount the whole setup on an aluminium plate and then mount that to the surface al la Mikuni MX 40. Cut a 75mm dia hole in the cladding where the exhaust skin fitting exits and lag the area well though. Most of this info is in the marine install instructions that come with the kit anyway so have a good read of that.

  42. Long story short. We have directionally drilled multiple utilities under the Cherwell under Cherwell side stream across the park across a road and under the canal (twice) via and according to the requisite licences from the respective authorities. On offside of canal, there are two pressurised utilities laid in 70's in line of our target shots, which to damage would create untold grief for the town and canal. The records show the things in the canal which was just erroneous. Hence lots of survey to find them including radar so we did not drill into them whilst keeping our licenced proximity from the structure. It became apparent the ground levels have vastly changed - where better to glean further info than here. The last canal bore was just completed today at noon following loads of careful investigative work and deep excavations proving negatives. (if you can't find you make sure you aim for where you know it's not).

  45. The ships is Norwegian, called "Nordstjernen" (North Star) 150 passengers. She was built in Hamburg in 1956 for the Norwegian Hurtigruten service but now cruises round the Norwegian Fjords. Once a year she does a cruise to Hamburg hence her appearance on the Kiel Canal. G here is a link to a very short video of her A fine looking ship with great character. Howard

  47. If you have no experience of this type of modern vessel, you may well be agreeably surprised, both with the standard of accommodation and catering. That is, of course, unless you expect a cruise ship which this ship isn’t. Howard
