  2. As a member of both forums..though tbh I don't visit here very much, the 'purge' disturbed me and I did not feel at ease here anymore, I would just like to add that 'over there' is far more relaxed. There are times when the language becomes to offensive for me but I then withdraw having posted my feelings on the matter. As to tech stuff..if a qu is raised it is answered though it may wander off topic. I think, if here feels it needs to be moderated to continue within its boundaries then thats ok.. Over there works being unmoderated as fellow members will squash anything too outrageous. Each to their own... Martin used to post lots and he could be quite offensive then he left and over here his language is 'moderated'.. Anyway I hope the 2 new moderators enjoy their role...it is lovely that people are willing to volunteer for these tasks..

  4. Unlikely maybe, but true. As you say it was before your time - a time when there was a period of mad mods running wild and slashing and burning for personal reasons and with the support and encouragement of a clique of a few non-mods who were “in the gang” and who held private meetings to decide who should be banned in order to make the forum align with their personal views of politics and other behaviours. Not surprisingly this group is determined to try to rewrite history by deleting these events. But we will remember! Anyway, that was then and this is now and the mad mods were eventually expunged so it is now a diffferent place which is fine, but let’s not keep trying to rewrite history.

  5. Hi Haggis and Iain, If it helps I could pick you up from your current location or Park Farm Marina and drive you to Streethay tomorrow, or Friday (not Thursday as my car is booked in for a service & MoT). If you want my help, PM me with your requirements.

  7. Things are getting better! Stephanie phoned me yesterday and arranged for her top Beta engineer to visit us (on his day off) and he and iain gave the engine an in depth inspection including a pressure test and they even had the engine running. The conclusion was that the overheating (which was the first indication that the all was not well) was caused by a small water leak under the engine. The engine does not appear to have suffered damage and when some new parts are fitted all should be well. This was excellent news as we might have have been looking at a new engine if there was damage. Hopefully Chris will come back today with the parts but if not the sun is shining Haggis

  10. Is this a Martin rule, that I can't visit both sites, as I haven't seen the rule anywhere else? The issue, and criticism of thunderboat was raised by mrsmelly, I merely responded. Thunderboat is a newer and smaller forum, and over the two or so stormy years that it has existed, it has settled into a place I feel happier than here. But I wouldn't presume to tell people whether they can or can't or should or shouldn't visit and join in. Thunderboat was created by people banned from here at the 'whim' of mods and their friends, without right of reply or explanation in some cases. I wonder why they elected to create a totally open and honest forum, without any moderation? Rog

  24. That's a bit rich, coming from someone who was an active member for a good long while, posting in a style that would be impossible here. Still, tha can allus tell a boat less caravan owning Yorkshire man, just not much. I feel I need to apologise for the vision on a naked Emperor I placed in your minds. I hope you all slept. It's not as bad as you might think, the dangly bits are all covered by a licence disc. That's why it's not on display. Cunning choice of words. Try substituting "influence" for "authority".

  27. Mine were made in France thats across the channel I think? Also how many lives does your diesel engine cost? thousands, millions? a lot a very lot that is proven by the ongoing legislation across the world against them

  29. We've had diesel electric trains for decades. I suspect the obvious way forward is an engine running at an optimal speed for charging with a battery pack to provide surge current and also power when not moving.

  30. I very much doubt that dates from its working days, does it? I could probably think of at least a dozen reasons why it looks a bad idea!

  34. used oil containers live in the swims on my boat used oil filters go in an ice cream container next to them fresh oil is in containers on top of the swim and fresh oil filters are in a drawer under the bed (along with a spare fan belt, spare diesel filters and various "just in case" parts) when I find somewhere that takes used oil it's no hardship to grab the containers. bear in mind if an engine has short oil change times it usually means it doesn't have a great deal of oil, I find with mine that I can never suck more 5 litres out (1 container full) so it becomes 1 out - 1 in. I always have 2 containers unused (just in case) which served me well about 6 weeks ago when my gearbox decided the oil inside it should really be in the bilge (selector shaft seal failed with oil pouring out while in neutral), having the spare oil on-hand meant I was able to refill the gearbox instantly and get the boat back to it's mooring

  40. I remember an apocryphal tale that went the rounds of the company where I served as a deck cadet. One of our company ships of 10,000 tons was approaching a berth in the corner of a dock in Montevideo. The Master decided to berth without tugs and when nearing the berth end on the ship had a black out. There was a hurried order to Let Go the starboard anchor to stop the ship, but by the time the anchor was dropped, the bow had hit the quay, ridden up and over the nearby railway line and the anchor dropped nicely into a passing coal wagon being shunted along the quayside, laying out the cable nicely as the train continued its journey! 41. Last night we moored at the Locaboat yard at St Martin where the guys sorted a couple of problems with the boat for us. Unfortunately one is still not sorted but we can live with it. We will certainly look at the Locaboat to hire from next time. Nice chaps and the boats look very nice indeed. Today we are heading to Malestroit. Just having a quick stop while we wait for the lockie to come back from lunch then we will be on our way again. We did manage to find a bar open last night for a few drinks. Today we are hoping to eat out for the first time so far!

  43. I'd forgotten about this page, and just thought I should add that Drake (possibly a shortened Manvers Barge) is after a lengthy conversion now moored on the Thames just below Tower Bridge and in very good company. As she was when bought in Penryn As she is now Her interior when she arrived in London, as she is now And the best view in London

  46. We WILL catch up, by hook or by crook! Bit cheezed off by this long stoppage - even tho we’ll be below it, there’s no winding for us north of here so as long as we’re pointed south, we’ll get ONE cruise in over this time - thank god we’ve not got a pump-out!! Altho I guess we could take the opportunity to practice reversing for a mile and a half - not as if there’ll be any other boats about! ?

  47. I suppose I could have just said “the mods dun bad innit” but I was trying to align my style with that of the intended recipient! oh and as it seems some folk don’t understand slashing and burning, it’s explained here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slash-and-burn
